Loved the entire trip. Joani provided amazing service at the infinity pool. Housekeeping was amazing. The room was spotless and the view stunning. We loved the ferry ride to Palamino Island. Everyone was friendly and helpful. Wish we could live here!

I was looking forward to a trip to las Casitas, as it had been recommended by a friend. Arriving at a "Waldorf Astoria" resort, we had specific, high level expectations, especially at Las Casitas which was supposed to be the nicest of the accommodations at El Conquistador. No doubt the setting is spectacular: beautiful grounds, overlooking the ocean, a well-manicured golf course, and a private island beach. But the undoing is usually in the details, as it was here. The landscaping is impeccable at the price of leaf blowers and lawnmowers, starting at 8 AM, even on Sunday. The view is beautiful, but not from our room; the windows in the room with no blackout curtains, so you're up with the daylight; weak or no WiFi; no blow dryer; one coffee cup in the room, not two; no coffee stirrer, so we were stirring the coffee we were sharing in one cup with the back of our toothbrush.....OK, very petty stuff, but very annoying....the island with the beach sounds like fun, except you and the other thousand people staying at the Conquistador are fighting for a trip down the funicular cable car (no stairs or elevator options) which only holds about 20/trip hoping to make the ferry, that is on the 1/2 hour, or wait for the next one. So, what was good/great? The food in almost all the specialty restaurants (especially the Fontana Piccolo) very high quality, despite the children banging on the piano in the upstairs center lobby between three high end restaurants and the Martini Bar. Oh, almost forgot, children and teens overrunning the entire establishment including the bars and lounges, with little or no concern from management (or their parents, apparently). Definitely got the Trip Advisor Family Award, because you can take the kids, let 'em run loose and not worry about a thing. Not that I'm an ogre (although I don't even like myself by now, re-reading my review), but you come to expect certain standards and decorum, especially from "Waldorf-Astoria". All in all, maybe I am being a bit harsh, I may have not picked the right place for the rest and relaxation I wanted.

We stayed at Las Casitas so can't comment on the hotel. Overall the grounds were extremely well maintained. Unfortunately I can't say the same for the one bedroom Casita we stayed in. It was clean but overall not up to the expectations that a Waldorf Astoria property's reputation would suggest. There were a number of broken light switches and other light switches that controlled nothing. Some lamp switches dangled worryingly. The air conditioning ran non-stop. Only after 2 days and several complaints did an outside contractor finally arrived and solve problem. Furnishings were dated and not comfortable. The biggest mystery and failing was the personal concierge. We didn't choose Las Casitas because of this service, but we were curious. We received one e-mail from a person saying they would be our concierge. Never heard from them again. No e-mail, phone calls, nothing. Completely bizarre to advertise the amenity and then absolutely not deliver. The only other important point is the distance from the Casitas to the beach on Palomino Island. First you have to get to the hotel from the Casitas, a few minutes by shuttle bus, then walk through hotel to elevators down to tram, ride the tram down to the marina, then wait for ferry to Palomino Island (runs every 15 minutes), then about an 8 minute ferry ride to island. All and all it was a bit of a haul. We found the pools by the Casitas perfectly fine. Food in restaurants was very good though you should make reservations early on, especially at Chops. Call before to confirm reservations.

Not sure what you are paying for with this resort. There are no amenities and the physical condition of the entire place is poor. The rooms are barebones to the extreme, nothing has been updated or renovated. The place is also teeming with young children and the pools are absolutely packed with kids. The private island was extremely disappointing. The chairs were broken and it was dirty. The island isn't even private. Boats blasting extremely loud music are docked at the island and it isn't a relaxing or pretty place.
