Splendid is formidable; charming is comfortable but still elegant. The Montebello is charming. Integrating several separate 19th c. domestic structures, the hotel is more like a villa than a palace, distinct from the grandly scaled palazzos of the St. Regis or Excelsior. The amenities, like the free Internet, are conveniently contemporary, though, as an American, I would give up the bidet for a larger shower. But if the amenities are modern, the brocaded furnishings, ornamented accouterments, and marble fittings are perfectly suited to their 1850ish architectural frame. Staff members, like their environment, are also exceptionally pleasant – helpful, responsive, and un-pompous. Guests should take advantage of the excellent restaurant and happy hour in the garden (two drinks for the price of one). The hotel is well located. It is around the corner from the Teatro Comunale and three short blocks from the promenade along the Arno River. (There are, unfortunately, no rooms with a view.) It is close enough to the major monuments to be healthy—about a 20-minute walk through the lively, fashion- and antique-filled narrow streets of the city to the Duomo. It is far enough away from them—and the mobs of tourists that they attract—to have two obvious advantages. First, the hotel is quiet. Second, the small trattoria in the vicinity have maintained local culinary standards; those standards are apt to be eroded in the eateries closer to the center that cater to the site-seeing masses.

This was an amazing stay at Montebello! next time I will definitely stay here. We had dinner at the Restaurant and it was delicious and amazing service. The proximity to the center of Florence was just perfect. It was just a short walk and you had so many places and so much to do. Thank you Montebello for a warm welcome and an amazing stay!

The bathroom had a defect and there was only hot water. During my 2 days stay it couldn't be fixed.. Only one socket for electricity in the room.. The good things are the underground parking and the safety due to American embassy in the area. Expensive..

The best aspect of this hotel is the friendly and particularly helpful reception team (going out of the way to help the guests - we change of rooms, help with adapters and support for Uffizi, Pisa bookings). Breakfast is nice - with a cool machine to make fresh orange juice. :) And the best aspect being, it is a short 10min walk, from the Firenze Santa Maria Novella train station.
