Enjoyable Family Vacation in Large Hotel

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

I recently stayed at this hotel with my family of four. We stayed in a superior queen room in the Pantlind Wing which is the older part of the hotel. The room is converted from two rooms into one with two bathrooms and two doors. Both bathrooms had tubs for kids. It was clean and large. The carpet and some of the furniture was worn. The beds were firm but comfortable. We swam everyday and the pool was in the other side of the hotel so we did have to walk through the lobby in our swimsuits to get to it. We only ate at the Wolfgang Counter which was convenient and quick. The food was normal hotel pricing but good. The stores inside the hotel were nice with one being a normal gift shop and the other a kids store. We also did duck bowling inside the hotel which was nice and fun for the kids. The hotel is very large so it was nice to let the kids run around in open areas with not many people around. It was a little confusing with 3 sets of elevator. We selfed parked and got turned around trying to get back to the car but still easy to get to via a skywalk. Hilton has an app that lets you check in the day before and select a room which was nice. They also have a digital key by using your phone which worked well in the elevator and room but didn’t work at the pool area so you will need a physical key. The pool and hot tub was nice but a little small. The area was warm but the pool was a little cold. The workout area was nice with free weights. There is also a bottle filler located in the workout area so you can fill up your bottles there. The location is great and walking distance to everything. We ate downtown and went to the public museum which is right across the river. Overall was a nice stay.

Terrible

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

Terrible experience! My room was directly across from the elevator on the 8th floor. Literally the "whoosh" sound an elevator makes as it ascends and descends was loud enough to keep me up all night and literally you could feel the vibration in the headboard, not to mention the dong of the elevator and people noise. The room had the ceiling falling in, exposing decades of piled up dust, pipes, and wiring. Other sections of the ceiling were stained from water damage. I spent the first bit of the stay on my hands and knees cleaning up the dusty nastiness on the bathroom floor providing me the full on Cinderella experience. There were small black flecks of some sort of yuck all over the "blanket", which was really just an overrated sheet. I had a room facing the street and road noise was loud and an issue, at least until traffic died down after 11 or so. The bed was uncomfortable for both my husband and I due to it being very firm, but if that is what you are used to then it may not be an issue for you. I contacted the desk to request a room change, but alas that was not possible due to rooms being sold out. I requested ear plugs and I was cheerfully referred to the gift shop where I may purchase some. There is no breakfast service. The options are Starbucks, which opens at 6:30 or a counter offering that opens at 7. There are thousands of people here and conference registration opens at 7 so unless you feel like being an candidate on your own personal episode of the Hunger games, bring snacks or something. Consequently, your choice is either walk in the rain (bummer) or use your car, but then fight the massive lines to find a parking space for the conference upon return. I didn't check Door Dash or Uber, so perhaps that would be an option. Bathroom lines at this conference for educators, mostly women, was an issue. Imagine a concert line where the women are lined up for a mile, yet hardly any men using their facilities since proportionally there was a significant disparity of attendees being female v. male. They need to switch a few of the men's facilities temporarily for this conference to accommodate. The one advantage was having a room, providing access to a private bathroom. But alas just a little sketched out that at any unannounced time some dude would be in to make repairs to the obviously leaking ceiling. This was my first stay at Amway since I normally stay up the road for this conference for less than half the price and breakfast included. That cheaper room was far more comfortable and the lack of breakfast options at Amway negated the convenience of location. I am busy with work, so I am not taking time to enjoy the sights and offerings of the city, but the location of the hotel does put you in the middle of everything. This stay may be an isolated experience with Amway, but I would not return here unless it is the only option. Rooms

Never again.

My husband and I were celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary on March 5. Unfortunately there was a DNR convention. Pounding music both nights until very late, completely rude. Hotel didn’t seem to mind. Husband called and preordered roses and chocolates to be waiting in our room. Hotel never delivered. Our jr. suite overlooked the rooftop mechanicals, which were very loud. Grouting around the toilet is gross and brown. Bedside alarm went off at 6am, and I didn’t set it. Hotel had an opportunity to help make our anniversary special and they didn’t.

Don't stay here

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 months ago

Awful! Husband has always wanted to stay here so we were in town for an even and thought we'd splurge! WRONG! laying here unable to sleep in this hard bed.. stiff pillows, can hear EVERYTHING going on in the hall & rooms around me. Unable to control the temp in the room, no constant fan to drown out the noise. Bathroom is sooo small, toilet is practically on the floor, door comes all the way into the bathroom... so weird! I'm going to be a zombie tomorrow due to no sleep! Never stay here again! Sadly out money AND Hilton points! 😡😡😡

Great hotel, great staff

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 months ago

I stay here every January for a conference and I've never had a bad stay. My room was in the tower this time, which I much prefer because the walls don't seem nearly as thin as the Paintlind side. It was lovely and quiet so I was able to actually get work done and rest while in my room (in the Paintlind, I've often been able to hear the conversations taking place in the next room). The fitness center is also very nice here. Drinks in the lobby bar (can't remember the name) were on the pricey side but very well made and the staff was great. The front desk staff is always fabulous here, very accommodating. Bonus in that it connects to the parking garage and DeVos Center by skywalk so you don't have to walk outside if the weather isn't great.
