Villa Maria Cristina, Relais & Chateaux in Guanajuato, Mexico

One of the most exclusive and exquisite boutique hotels in Mexico, and the first of its kind in Guanajuato, Villa María Cristina is a remarkable experience. Meticulous attention to detail and thoughtful décor are present throughout the property and its 28 spacious suites, with the air and atmosphere of a warmly welcoming home. Rich terracotta walls, mosaic-tiled floors, and oversize potted plants create an authentically Mexican feel, and the hotel's lovely terrace features a whirlpool under a pergola, as well as tranquil outdoor eating spaces. Accommodations offer hardwood floors, marble bathrooms, delicate natural color palettes, and European furnishings that complement the hotel's colonial architecture. Sunlight floods in through large windows and original works of art adorn the walls. Unwind from your travels with a massage, or take a soothing swim in the hotel spa's Roman-style sunken pool. Find a peace of mind that can only come with being in a secluded and far-from-frenzied destination, and allow Villa María Cristina to take you to a world of tranquility and joy.

The hotel features an intimate restaurant, set in an elegant lounge area on the first floor, with a fireplace and balconies overlooking the street. Serving a flavorful gourmet menu of Mexican and international dishes, complemented by fine wines from the hotel's extensive wine cellar, you need look no further than your doorstep to delight in a memorable gastronomic experience. Villa María Cristina is set in a city so picturesque and historic it is deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so waste no time in heading out to discover the depths of Guanajuato. From the city's numerous lively squares and live music, to ancient churches and museums, there are many sights to take in and cultural attractions are at every turn. Hidalgo Market's opulent building, as well as Juárez Theatre, with its neoclassical façade and crowning statues, are just a few examples of the architectural wealth of this city. Perhaps most unique to the city though is its network of underground tunnels. With walls made of solid rock, this impressive system of tunnels was originally created to divert the river after an early 20th-century flood. Take in the magnificence of Guanajuato while staying in the finest of facilities, at the charming and refined Villa María Cristina.

The hotel itself is very beautiful and the hotel staffs are very kind. We chose this hotel based on our friend's recommendation and he was right. This is a perfect place for a couple to relax. On the first night we arrived, we tried the hotel restaurant. We loved the menu and everything we ordered was delicious. The next day we started enjoying their gym and SPA. The SPA place is gorgeous, but not with full service. The temperature of the sauna never went up. To turn on the steam, it took forever. It was pity to see lack of maintenance for that kind of beautiful SPA place. But we at least enjoyed the indoor swimming pool and massage service just for only ourselves. If they will improve the SPA facility, yes I'd love to come back again.

Villa Maria Cristina is a faded princess in need of a shake up. I was the only person in their restaurant for dinner on a Thursday night. The rooms and grounds are superb and the underground heated pool and spa was to die for. So why was the place deserted? The staff were sluggish and not interested. The wifi was appalling - coming and going minute by minute. This is not expected in a hotel of this price range. Would l go back? Probably - the hot spa after a day walking was fabulous.

We stayed at the Hotel January 1st to 3rd while visiting Guanajuato. The hotel is a complex of several old mansions. The rooms are large and comfortable, however, if you have a disability you should discuss this with the hotel in advance as there are many stairs and our room even had steps to the bathroom There is a spa and a pool which we did not get to enjoy as we were out enjoying the City. The reason Ihestiatte rating the hotel as excellent is not because of the serviceor the property itself bu tbecause the restaurant was a disappoointment There are a number of small sitting areas to enjoy a drink and read a book and many guests were enjoying board games that are avaiilable. The food was uninspired and over priced. The hotel is not in the center of town, however, this is a short ten minute walk or cabs are reasonably priced. The hotel arranged a guide for us Roberto and he was great. Close by are a number of cafes for breakfast and a good Mexican restaurant, also a pharmacy and an ATM. I would recommend staying here as it is quiet, beautiful and a glimpse of a quieter time. The front desk was great and can meet any of your needs.

This hotel can compete favorably with any high end hotel in the world. Every aspect of the hotel reflects attention to fine detail. The suites have beautiful views, fine linens, beautiful woodwork and furniture and the maid service keeps everything spotless. The grounds are gorgeous and with a large heated pool for outside relaxing. The restaurant is first class and the room service is excellent. Staff is excellent, and available on a moments notice for special needs, and many speak very good English. A truly great hotel.
