Travaasa Hana in Hana, Maui, Hawaii

Travaasa Hana combines the words travel and pravaasa ("memorable journey" in Sanskrit) to describe the connection guests will feel with the land, with the locals and with themselves after a retreat to the wind-swept cliffs of Hamoa Beach. Travaasa's philosophy is one of creating deeper experiences: Riding a horse along the coast with a paniolo, or Hawaiian cowboy, as he recalls stories of growing up in Hana. Collecting vegetables from rich volcano soil and learning how to cook them. Sharing words of wisdom with a local teacher after a healing one-on-one Pilates session. Going home forever changed.

Greet the day with a guided meditation on black lava rocks at the edge of the sea. Match your vinyasas with the breeze during a yoga class on a patch of grass under coconut palms. Join a guide on a coastal walk among Polynesian plants, catching a glimpse of the ‘Alau Island bird sanctuary. Paint or write, inspired by your surroundings. Share stories around the nightly fire pit.

Where should I start!?!?! My fiancé and I just checked out from this resort and I am the happiest man in the world - not because we still have 14 days left in Hawai‘i - not because we had the most fantastic lunch at Bruddah Hutts in Hana - NO because I do not have to spend a single second in this resort again. We arrived Saturday afternoon and had booked a room with sea view - and we were looking forward to spending three relaxing days in peaceful Hana! Unfortunately - something different met us! The room we were given only had garden view. We went back to the reception and showed our booking confirmation that clearly stated ocean view. The receptionist (who had a extremely bad attitude and NO sense of customer service) reacted very surprisingly by standing up and saying “I do not have time for this” (and there were no other guest in the reception and even an extra receptionist). I said to my fiancé, that we could try to check the availability at the hotel we came from, who gave us a great service and stay. The receptionist reaction to that was “Yes - please do so”. I was speechless - where were the peaceful Hana. If it had not been for the 2 hours drive back to civilization - I wouldn’t have stayed. Spending 800$ per night - you expect at least a good service. We had breakfast once - where the oak meal was cold, the chia bowl was overdue, and the omelet was made with mushrooms from a can (at least it tasted like it). Travaasa clearly take the full advantage of being the only hotel in Hana. Price and quality do not match! I could tell more “funny” experiences, but they are smaller examples of how a little extra effort would have a significant better costumer experience. I can highly recommend to visit Hana - but do not bother to stay at Travaasa.

The best place to completely relax. If you are a total beach person, this might not be for you. But if you are looking for somewhere to completely unwind, this is it. So many activities offered on location, plus lots to do in Hana. So many greats eats also.

Travaasa's staff - from check-in to housekeeping, basically everyone we met and helped us - is consistently and genuinely warm. Always courteous and patient, even when we made mistakes and had to trouble them one time too many, and above all, makes us feel comfortable and relaxed, matching the beauty at this magical region. The property is beautifully maintained, next to the beach - at night you get to see stars up above and in the morning, you get to see the ocean and sun welcoming you. Only suggestion for the hotel: it offers many classes that we don't have time or appropriate family age composition to attend (most classes aren't for family with infants and toddlers), which is a pity - perhaps allow such families to trade these amenities for others (e.g. some juices/snacks even that make the little kids as happy as the yoga-class-taking adults ;)

If you thought customer service was dead even in top resorts, you have not been to Travaasa . A hidden gem that I’m afraid to tell everyone in social media . You don’t need to go to Four Seasons, this is true Hawaiian luxury .

The food at the restaurant of Travaasa could be served in larger portions. I ordered the lobster bisque soup. It was served in a cup about the size of a cappuccino cup and it was lukewarm in temperature. It was not worth the price. It was $15. The coconut shrimp with Thai peanut sauce is very tasty but on the same token, also very spendy for such a small portion. Travaasa could hit it out of the ball park if they made their portions bigger.
