Travaasa Hana in Hana, Maui, Hawaii

Travaasa Hana combines the words travel and pravaasa ("memorable journey" in Sanskrit) to describe the connection guests will feel with the land, with the locals and with themselves after a retreat to the wind-swept cliffs of Hamoa Beach. Travaasa's philosophy is one of creating deeper experiences: Riding a horse along the coast with a paniolo, or Hawaiian cowboy, as he recalls stories of growing up in Hana. Collecting vegetables from rich volcano soil and learning how to cook them. Sharing words of wisdom with a local teacher after a healing one-on-one Pilates session. Going home forever changed.

Greet the day with a guided meditation on black lava rocks at the edge of the sea. Match your vinyasas with the breeze during a yoga class on a patch of grass under coconut palms. Join a guide on a coastal walk among Polynesian plants, catching a glimpse of the ‘Alau Island bird sanctuary. Paint or write, inspired by your surroundings. Share stories around the nightly fire pit.

We had 2 nights at Travaasa as part of an itinerary in Maui and delighted we made the decision to stay here rather than just make the scenic drive. Each unit is huge, airy and with a really lovely comfy daybed out on the lanai. It's unpretentious but quality and standards are high and we had a very comfortable stay and it was much more modern than I expected given the nature of the area and lack of competitor hotels. It was my husband's birthday and we were really touched to have a bottle of fizz left for us in the fridge along with tasty banana bread - nice hospitality. The yoga studio on site is lovely and we enjoyed one of the sunset classes very much, nice teacher. Staying in Hana gives you opportunity to drive the road at the opposite time to everyone else, so we left Paia early afternoon and by the time we reached each stop, the tour buses had moved on or were coming the opposite way. It also meant we could have a sneaky head start a going to the red beach just next door to the property (locals will tell you it's dangerous but honestly not sure why - it's fine). We didn't eat on site but enjoyed the option to sign for our meal at Hana Ranch, which was realistically the only other restaurant. The pool was nice and a decent size to swim in and the extensive grounds made for a very chilled out stay. The units nearest to the ocean are the best as there's handy parking and you're very close to the pool too. Given the monopoly on the accommodation in the area, Travaasa could easily drop their guard but not so, standards were high - not luxury, granted (but stay in Wailea if you're after marble bathrooms), but a really nice stay. Very impressed.

The Travaasa Hana is a spectacular resort in the centre of Hana. The property is vast, well maintained, and butts right up to the rocky seashore. The saltwater pool overlooking the ocean is a perfect spot for morning swims or watching the sunrise. Our suite was large and included exquisite bamboo furniture. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom well designed. However, the food at the bar grill, also known as the Bar Lanai, is OK but not great. We did check out the dining room menu at the Preserve Kitchen + Bar, but we balked at paying outrageous prices; entrées were expensive as expected, however all of the side dishes were priced separately. As all of the food was prepared in the same kitchen, we decided not to chance it. Nonetheless, the accommodations, the grounds, and the facilities were outstanding, and made for a great experience.

After 50 miles down the sinuous Hana Highway, this place is an absolute joy. Terrific views from the Ocean Cottages, excellent food at all meals and a spa to die for. Occasional service lapses (e.g., no towels at the pool) but otherwise terrific. It ain't cheap at the high end but still worth it. And the vegetation around Hana is beautiful.

Based on past experience we decided to stay overnight at Hana after the long drive instead of hurrying to get back the same way we came before it gets dark. The best decision we ever made. Travaasa is a great place to stay and relax and rest overnight. The staff are simply awesome, super friendly and helpful. The environment is very inviting and peaceful to help you rest. Food at the restaurant is delicious and the service is excellent. The views from the rooms are breathtaking and calming. Stay overnight at Travaasa and enjoy Hana after the long drive. Highly recommended.

Wonderful experience at this Beautiful Hana luxury hotel. I spent 3 nights here for my Birthday to relax and unwind from my busy work schedule. The staff was so nice and accommodating. The food in the hotel restaurant was absolutely amazing. My Ocean Bungalow was enchanting with a lot of room and very comfortable. Many activities were available and my massage at the Spa, with Miracle, was incredible. Hamoa Beach is a great place to swim and relax. Overall, the best getaway ever!!
