Travaasa Hana in Hana, Maui, Hawaii

Travaasa Hana combines the words travel and pravaasa ("memorable journey" in Sanskrit) to describe the connection guests will feel with the land, with the locals and with themselves after a retreat to the wind-swept cliffs of Hamoa Beach. Travaasa's philosophy is one of creating deeper experiences: Riding a horse along the coast with a paniolo, or Hawaiian cowboy, as he recalls stories of growing up in Hana. Collecting vegetables from rich volcano soil and learning how to cook them. Sharing words of wisdom with a local teacher after a healing one-on-one Pilates session. Going home forever changed.

Greet the day with a guided meditation on black lava rocks at the edge of the sea. Match your vinyasas with the breeze during a yoga class on a patch of grass under coconut palms. Join a guide on a coastal walk among Polynesian plants, catching a glimpse of the ‘Alau Island bird sanctuary. Paint or write, inspired by your surroundings. Share stories around the nightly fire pit.

The Travaasa is a 2 star hotel charging a 5 star price. The rooms feel like you are at a summer sleep away camp, the bathrooms especially! If the rooms had been half the cost, it still would have been too expensive but I could have justified as it is the only resort in Hana. But at 775 a night, my expectations were pretty high and therefore I was sorely disappointed. This does not feel like a resort at all! My advice, find a motel (there are a few) stay for one night after you drive the road to Hana and return to the south side of the island the next day. Don't waste your time or your money staying at this property. If you want to spend 700 plus a night and feel like you got real value for your dollar stay at Hotel Wailea, now that is a resort that delivers on what they promise, well worth the money.

4th stay at Travassa LOVE this resort! Great staff, amazing view, relaxing calm vibe. This is a great place for a quiet retreat, great for couples, honeymoon, get-away. This was a friends trip and we had a lot of fun!

Was fortunate enough to visit on a beautiful day after driving and exploring the Road to Hana. From checkin to checkout the Travaasa exceeded expectations. The grounds are beautiful. The pool is stunning. The staff pay attention to detail, know your name and have your car waiting for you on your way. The restaurant had the best Mai Tai and excellent snacks. Stay and do the loop the next day.

I feel a bit badly about only rating it 4/5, but for there is a reason. The hotel is beautiful, and the staff were all very helpful and wonderful. I had absolutely no cell service, (which for me is a bonus, apparently its a T-Mobile thing FYI), and I liked that there were no TVs in the room. I loved that there were a ton of board games you could borrow from the concierge! The restaurant is only open past 5pm, so breakfast and lunch you're on your own. They will deliver takeout, but there are some awesome food trucks and a general store a 5 minute walk away. The rooms are quite spartan, but the cottages are divine. I was traveling solo and was in the "family suite" area, which meant a lot of screeching from children of screeching age. There was a huge family next to me on their outdoor space, and i didn't feel like I could go sit outside as they would have been RIGHT there with no privacy or space at all. Not the fault of the hotel. Hana is an incredibly beautiful place, and I really enjoyed my time there. I think it is worth springing for the cottages, as it would likely be a more private, enjoyable experience. You can't expect to go somewhere so remote and have all of the amenities you are used to, even if you're paying top dollar.
