Travaasa Hana in Hana, Maui, Hawaii

Travaasa Hana combines the words travel and pravaasa ("memorable journey" in Sanskrit) to describe the connection guests will feel with the land, with the locals and with themselves after a retreat to the wind-swept cliffs of Hamoa Beach. Travaasa's philosophy is one of creating deeper experiences: Riding a horse along the coast with a paniolo, or Hawaiian cowboy, as he recalls stories of growing up in Hana. Collecting vegetables from rich volcano soil and learning how to cook them. Sharing words of wisdom with a local teacher after a healing one-on-one Pilates session. Going home forever changed.

Greet the day with a guided meditation on black lava rocks at the edge of the sea. Match your vinyasas with the breeze during a yoga class on a patch of grass under coconut palms. Join a guide on a coastal walk among Polynesian plants, catching a glimpse of the ‘Alau Island bird sanctuary. Paint or write, inspired by your surroundings. Share stories around the nightly fire pit.

In a good way, this hotel was expensive but delivered in service, setting and experience! From the minute we checked in the staff was friendly, extremely helpful with our bags and car. We stayed far away from the car and realized we forgot something the next day. After calling the front desk someone was at our door just minutes later with our bag. We saw rainbows over the sea, whales clapping tails during yoga and a private hula class during a rainstorm topped it off for my wife! Delicious food and a great art gallery with original art next door. The only disappointment was the art in the rooms, typical photo prints of random Hawaii imagery? Best fine art in the hotel was tucked away into the restrooms near the restaurant?

Boring times ten. No tv not friendly staff no reason to visit here unless you want to be off the grid or are hiding from reality and willing to pay. Glad only staying one night and do not plan to return.

First, the property and Hana are beautiful. The setting next to the ocean can't be beat. Don't miss the Red Sand beach which is a short walk from the property. The pool and hot tub is also nice. This being said, the rooms and hotel are disappointing. Our Garden Room and bathroom seemed very dated and in need of a refresh. The common areas of the hotel and restaurant seem to have become run down since I was last there four years ago. Eat at the Hana Ranch restaurant, associated with the hotel instead for a good Maui steak and seafood. Unlike other luxury properties there is no welcome drink or cold towel to greet you. We went to the bar in the evening to try to have some Hawaii rums and nothing available. Stock some of the three different local rums from Maui, Kaui, and Oahu! The dining room lacked any charm and seemed out of a Holiday Inn or Courtyard by Marriott. In short, wonderful to stay in Hana and the grounds next to the ocean are beautiful. The rooms and hotel are underwhelming and not really a luxury hotel. Disappointing for the price.

The road to Hana is filled with good intentions but it is seriously a stupid idea. It is stressful and dangerous. Going both ways in one days is madness and I'm not mad... a little crazy but not mad. Staying for the night in Hana at Travassa was inspired. Not only is it beautiful, the people are helpful and friendly. Iit is SO peaceful that even the not so great weather did not matter at all. We soaked in the pool, the hot tub and even enjoyed the campfire by the full moon with the ocean as an ambient backdrop. The breakfast was delicious and the hand and foot massage were divine. If I didn't have somewhere else to be, I would have stayed longer. Definitely worth the trip back but I'm thinking helicopter.

Slow-paced, low-key yet luxurious property. Natural setting is stunning. Staff were all absolutely lovely! Food was quite good and spa services were excellent! Lots to do if you want it, but easy to do nothing....We will definitely return.
