About the Hotel

Nestled in a valley near West Lake on the west fringes of Hangzhou, Amanfayun is surrounded by ancient temples, bamboo forests and terraced tea fields - a world away from urban life. Discoveries await throughout the peaceful resort as well as the region beyond, whether it is a morning prayer session with Buddhist monks, a soothing nature walk or a visit to a neighboring tea plantation. Surrounded by tea plantations and bamboo groves, Amanfayun is a spiritual sanctuary informed by Chinese tradition and Buddhist monastic culture. Explore this centuries-old village restored using ancient techniques, at your own pace. Embracing the layout and spirit of a traditional Chinese village, Amanfayun is a place of winding stone footpaths and shaded courtyards through which the dwellings – some dating back over a century – are accessed. Roofs are clay tile and interior floors are stone or wood, and some offer upper floors with views over the treetops. Fine calligraphy art pieces decorate the walls.

Magic place

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 days ago

This is THE PLACE to stay when you come to Hangzhou! Terrific location: in the middle of scenic area, just next to the temples and famous Laughing Buddha, extremely green and beautiful surroundings. The hotel is a natural part of the park and forest, it succeeds to keep traditional style and at the same time possesses all modern features (well equipped spacious rooms, delicious restaurants, cultural activities area). Amazing staff: the most helpful, nice and friendly (have arranged a late dinner just for us, as were late from the evening show on the West lake; arranged extremely interesting tour in the Fayun scenery area; provided us with effective transportation; anticipated any desire and wish!). It was amazing time, highly recommend to stay in this magic place while in Hangzhou or around.

Lux and rustic

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

A lux country house experience which was a sanctuary from the crowds. The public path cutting through the property did lose a problem with privacy but it was managed well. The cottage we had was spacious and rustic. It was dimly it which was quite atmospheric. Service is excellent throughout. The location deep inside a tourist zone meant it can be a hassle to go out. The roads may be closed to traffic during peak season and drivers reluctant to brave the jam. But we were happy just spending time within the beautiful property.

Phenomenal Food

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 months ago

The food is one of the best I’ve had around the world! The Chinese tastes exactly like my grandmothers cooking and the Western food was among the best! The pesto was the best I’ve had in the world! And the meats were cooked to perfection! Kudos to the chef! Great job and keep it up! I hear he’s also great with Middle Eastern dishes!

Not amazed

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed September 20, 2021

Two months ago we stayed at Amanyangyun in Shanghai where we had a superb experience. So we thought we could book a stay Amanfayun, but unfortunately it was not up to the level of our first Aman stay. 1. The English of the staff was quite basic at the reception and all around. I asked to change the room but the request was not properly addressed and we felt they were not considerate of the fact we had a baby on a stroller and our room was quite far behind the main road with a lot of stairs up and down. 2. Breakfast was a la carte and as soon as we checked in (1pm) they were asking us to select the breakfast for the next day. This was very weird, real Covid times are gone and as if they would need a lot to prepare. The menu was actually quite limited, again comparing to Amanyangyun it was quite poor. 3. The western food was nothing special weather breakfast or the lunch & dinner menu - would expect to be much better in such a hotel. Anyhow all the other Chinese restaurants were really good, including the vegetarian. 3. First day we wanted to go to the pool, it was a nice day. There had been a "typhoon" the day before so the pool had some leaves and as the staff mentioned some insects, so we took a look and it just had to be cleaned but no one was up to do so. This was crazy, for the price we pay we cannot use this facility because no one is up to clean the pool? Second day we where there for around 10minutes, when one guy comes and starts to spread this insect killing smoke which has a super strong smell for sure harmful plus was super noisy we had to leave. Third day & last day it was really sunny so we did manage to hang out in the pool in the afternoon. The staff who takes care of the pool lied down on a sun bed and played with his phone all afternoon. It was weird also that there is no pool food or drinks services, however we asked and after some attempts it was accepted to order lunch from the restaurant. Plus we had to wear a swim cap, and if we didn't have we had to pay around 100rmb for this. We didn't come prepared with a swim cap because at Amanyangyun they have two pools and it was never required to wear a swim cap. 4. The hotel is now being painted (finally) but we noticed that most white walls around the hotel including the spa were actually filthy! I've stayed in really cheap hotels where nothing compares to how dirty they walls were here. 5. Despite this, the staff is really polite and do try to do their best, but we didn't feel that warm welcome and attention as we did at Amanyangyun. We felt a bit "abandoned", no staff ever asked us how our stay is going or even in the end if we enjoyed our stay, if we need anything, or properly guide us through the hotel premises. No history was shared, it felt a bit soul less. We had high expectations according to our previous stay so felt quite disappointing at Amanfayun. We will not go back for sure.
