Due to general condition of the hotel in certain areas, I just can't go 5 stars on this one. To be quite honest, there is room for improvement. I will say that in all the important categories except for physical plant, this hotel does rank 5 stars. What I love: The Location - Quiet area away from the crowds in a good neighborhood. Shopping is almost walkable. The Views - Diamondhead view and the view of the mountains in the opposite direction are equally spectacular. The Food - Breakfast buffet is fantastic. Get a room rate that includes it. What I Like: The Rooms - I like the rooms because they are large. Very spacious in fact. What I didn't Like: Arancini - Just not a great menu. Service was great. Food was just okay. Condition - The age and state of repair of the property is not up to standard. Needs investment. Overall, the staff is fantastic making for a wonderful stay. We will be back. I wish I could have gone 5 stars but just not quite there.

My favorite hotel in the Honolulu area. The tranquil surroundings yet access to civilization are unique, the staff is perfect, unobtrusive yet there if you need them. Access to beaches, golf and shopping, as well as a great spa, cool looking kids pool and resident dolphins assure the resort hotel is kind of perfect for everyone. Trust me, that's hard to pull off. Family friendly and romantic. The dining there also encompasses a few moods, brunchy family, or romantic for couples.

Overall, we had a very nice experience but I wouldn’t stay here again. On a return trip to Honolulu, I’d stay in Waikiki for more convenient access to restaurants and shopping and still a beautiful beach view. For a resort experience, go to another island! Pros: - Nice quiet location in upscale Kahala neighborhood, private beach -Entry level room had a beautiful mountain view and partial ocean view from side window (but no balcony or lanai) - Very friendly and accommodating service at check-in - Comfortable bedding, robes and complimentary coffee and water replenished twice daily - They sent a tray of chocolate covered strawberries on my birthday, which was the purpose of the trip. Cons: - No upgrade despite resort didn’t seem full. We were offered an ocean view room but told it was on a low floor primarily overlooking the porte-cochere and roof construction. No thanks! - Only 1 hot tub and pool. Worked fine for our stay (Monday-Wednesday during a slower season) but would be concerned during peak season. - Rude attendant in fitness area. I entered after a walk on the beach and had sand on my feet so grabbed a towel to wipe it off on the mat outside the door. She ran over and instructed me to brush the sand off away from the mat and then picked up the mat in front of me and shook it out. Really? Isn’t that what a mat is for? - Bathroom tile is chipped and scratched and needs to be replaced. There was paint sloppily splashed on the mini bar cabinetry and bathtub/shower combo caulking was molded. None of this particularly bothersome to me but odd for a luxury hotel room.

Watch out who you allow to park your car at The Kahala. There are Valets with extensive records who are questionable. I found out one has an extensive record, over 26 cases including driving without a license. Make sure you know who is valeting your automobile.

Thank you all, it’s a long way from home but we will be back Jon and Jean, England
