About the Hotel

Dubbed the “Pink Palace of the Pacific” The Royal Hawaiian is a 1920’s Spanish-Moorish-style beauty occupying a prime stretch of famed Waikiki Beach on the same spot that once was home to Queen Kaahumanu’s summer palace. The excellent beachfront locale affords private beach access and makes for enviable Ocean views from this iconic Honolulu property. 528 bright rooms and suites blend historic Pacific Islander ambience and of-the-moment décor: dark wood furnishings, nostalgic woven ceiling fan blades and intricately textured gold-and-fuchsia hued floral wallpaper reigns opposite a soothing cream-color palette. 21st century creature comforts such as wide-screen LCD televisions, iPod compatible CD/radio alarm clocks, high-speed Internet access, refrigerators, and laptop-size in-room safes come standard while bathrooms feature high-end complimentary toiletries.

Reviews for The Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Collection Resort, Waikiki

Very pleased with our Experience

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 days ago

Upon arrival, we were greeted with fresh leis. We weren’t expecting this to be included, so it was a very nice welcome! The hotel is beautiful! The open-air lobby lets you immediately take in the beautiful ocean views while you check-in. The hotel’s Mai Tai Bar serves good food but be prepared to pay quite a bit more for most things while in Hawaii. The hotel is kept very clean and smells amazing! The bed was very comfortable. The room was free of outside noises or distractions from within the hotel. The hotel is located so that you are close to many other places of interest. The reason for not deserving a five star review from my experience is: 1) We couldn’t get the room temperature cool enough. 2) Our garden view (room 340) was blocked from the tree being so big that the leaves were up against the window, blocking any kind of garden view. All in all, we would be happy to stay here again!

Loved my stay, but hoping for more !

I absolutely loved my stay at The Royal Hawaiian , and I have two more nights to go. I chose this hotel because of the location, the history, the ambiance and easy access to the beach / food / shopping etc. What I liked : - upgrade to ocean view room in the historic building. - love the historic design and interior style - it’s very quiet and relaxing - the hotel isn’t too crowded and I didn’t feel like I was constantly running into people while on the property. - great service : front desk, spa, housekeeping, beach chair rental etc. - my breakfast was comped and so I enjoyed all of the meals there. I don’t think I would pay for it though, everything that is free tastes better. I loved the pink pancakes and the sausage the most. - beach chair location and comfort was great - I booked for three days. - loved all the spots to sit and relax - looking at the ocean or the garden , the property is beautiful. Why it didn’t get 5/5 - no room service. For a premium price - this bummed me out. I love having a meal in my room during vacation. - no pool or beach drink service - this is a huge miss and I wish they offered poolside and beachside service - lack of water / amenities with beach umbrella. When I have booked an other resorts usually fresh fruit and cold water is included. - no beach offering for guests unless it’s paid - which is also a bummer - pool and hot tub are small, and I never went in - parking and valet is expensive - at $65 per night plus a car rental - it is hard to justify in the future. - spa amenities. The location of the treatment was great. However the steam room and jacuzzi need a major update. It does not match the historic and beautiful aesthetic of the rest of the hotel. - lack of on site dining options : Mai Tai bar is great for drinks and bites but the meal options were not appealing to me. Azure was expensive and after having breakfast there every day I didn’t feel the need to go back. - I wish they had another spot to grab a bite during the day ! Overall, I would definitely return and recommend but would love to see some updates to services in the future.

A memorable hotel with lots of history

Best location in Oahu, long history and well maintained resort and beach. I would definitely go back again. We had a medical emergency and word got out to the restaurant who knew we were with a tour group and gave us immediate attention to where to get help. The views from our room was the best we ever had and a memory for our 50th Anniversary. We were not penalized for showing up late for dinner.

Overall not a good experience

I can see why people like it, but it's a complete rip off, compared to other hotels within walking distance it's dated, upkeep and maintenance seems to be to the minimum. My issue is necessarily with the above, but with they charge you for everything. Go out to expensive restaurant, you have left overs, request a microwave, that will be $25, deck chairs $40-$90, even though I selected free breakfast (as an ambassador), more nickel and diming on the menu, I never went to a Marriott hotel were your given 2 options on the menu, anything else your charged. This was never stated when I checked in, also menu selection is terrible and food is over priced, no taste, oh and the small cereal I got, I was charged $10 for something that costs $1 anywhere else. When I went to check out, the Hawaiian darker skinned guy on the desk, didn't not give a flying flip, just did not care and walked off after I got my bill, anyone else around just kept their head down. My advise is go somewhere else, better options for the same $$$ LOL $25 for the use of a microwave, what we're back into the early 90s at Motel 6?

First trip to Honolulu, so glad we chose this hotel!

This resort lived up to or exceeded expectations in every way. We loved our gorgeous tower room, staff were very friendly and we had a spectacular dinner at Azure. Property is simply breathtaking. We did the luau, which I reviewed separately. There is also plentiful shopping nearby, from basic to high end.

I have now stayed at the Royal Hawaiian three times with Luxury Link packages and have never been disappointed! The staff are all courteous and friendly—some have been there for over 30 years!—and the quality of the service is exceptional. Arranging dates and package events was handled very professionally and helpfully by the hotel staff in person and via email. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a serene, graceful and extremely scenic stay right on Waikiki Beach!
