The Modern Honolulu in Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii

Nowhere else but The Modern Honolulu can you find such a dynamic combination of laid-back beach life and cosmopolitan excitement. It’s two minutes from the beach – including prime surf spots where locals flock – and walking distance to downtown Honolulu’s galleries and luxury shopping scene. Explore Honolulu’s bars and street food (don’t miss the roadside shrimp trucks), but don’t stray far from the hotel – Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto’s fine dining concept constantly wins Hawaii’s top accolades, and at night, celeb DJs turn Addiction into a club straight out of South Beach.

Throw on a sarong and gaze at the sea over Kona coffee and a plate of macadamia nut waffles topped with bananas and Chantilly cream. Borrow a board and hit the waves, drawing inspiration from the colorful Herbie Fletcher installation of surfboards in the lobby. Unwind by the pair of freeform outdoor pools. Assemble an unforgettable sushi plate, complemented by sake tinged with honeyed walnuts.

I was in waikiki for a conference in January of 2017, and made the mistake of staying at the conference hotel...I attended a party at the Modern, and decided I'd stay there if I ever returned. I went the following year again and stayed for 4 days (January 2018). Our room had a partial ocean view. Rooms are beautifully decorated and live up to the hotel name. There is both a regular pool and an adult pool, although it's more of a lounger area with a little water (only a few inches). There's also a very cool hidden bar behind their lobby bookcases where they have live music most nights. Overall a very cool hotel!

Absolutely loved The Modern! Initially we wanted to stay again at the Hilton Hawaiian village; as despite the reviews we had a great time there + loved the facilities. But so glad we chose The Modern instead! Overall: Much more suitable for adults travelers, it’s a bit big to be a “boutique hotel” but sure is for Waikiki scale. It’s modern, clean, hip yet still manages to keep all of relaxing and happy Hawaii feel. We’ll not stay anywhere else when we come back to Hawaii in the future, especially I can be a very fussy traveler and I had zero problems at The Modern! Detailed reviews: 1. ROOM Our room was modern yet had all the relaxing lovely vibe about Hawaii. Super comfortable bed and nice bathroom with great pressure shower. We were lucky to get a little view of the sea + pool as well which was a bonus. The balcony was spacious and everything was in great order & condition which can be a rare treasure in most of the hotels in Waikiki which are rather outdated. 2. POOLS The main pool was always busy but not overly difficult to find a free spot on the bed which was nice, you don’t have to get up at 7am to save a seat like most other places in Hawaii! The “private beach” (adults only pool) was a bit of a let down though, it’s so shallow you can’t called it a pool. If you have to be like super picky, there were quite a few birds which was a bit annoying. 3. SERVICE It was great, everyone was super friendly and polite. We didn’t dine at the restaurant onsite but the poolside service was very attentive. 4. F&B Again, we didn’t dine at the restaurants but had breakfast, lunch and snacks at the poolside. Great food selection and they were all delicious. Drinks were also good, the coconut mojito was the star, could drink so many of them, so delicious! Would love to see happy hour in the afternoon though. There is one in the pm at the adults pool, but again it’s not as nice pool as the main one so we didn’t bother going up there, especially at the main pool you get the sun mostly in the afternoon! 5. LOCATION It’s located on the Ala Moana side of the waikiki, I guess depending on the personal preference this can be a good or a bad thing. For us we stayed 50% here and 50% at another place that’s on the Diamond Head side so not really a problem. However it for sure doesn’t have as many choice of restaurants vs being on the main Waikiki strip of course.

The service was excellent, all staffs were polite, welcoming and knowledgeable and the location was wonderful: shops, beach, restaurants etc. As the stay was during the time of an alleged missile attack it was all a crazy time. Apart from the warnings received on my mobile phone, nothing was done by The Morbern Honolulu to assist (where possible) their customer...

First time staying at The Modern Honolulu and it was definitely a lot less busier than other hotels that my friends' hotel which was nice because they had to wait forever for their elevator whereas this boutique hotel was quieter. The adult only pool was nice to hang out during the day and yoga is included with the stay which was a bonus. I was able to use their hospitality room between check-out and to the airport and it was a hotel room with all the amenities you need to get ready. This was what stood out to me and was much appreciated especially coming back from the beach all sandy. A bit far of a walk from the main shopping strip but still very close to the beach. Very friendly staff overall and the Grove provided a good selection of healthy meals.

One of my favorite hotels! It really is modern and beautiful. Facilities are fantastic. Great views. THE bar and restaurants are fantastic. Great happy hours specials. Friendly and accommodating staff, especially Lana at the front desk. Rooms were impeccable condition. Will book here again.
