The Homestead Resort was founded in 1766. It is HUGE, nestled in the mountains of Virginia with gorgeous golf courses, ski slopes, great dining and of course, hot springs to soak away aching muscles. My husband and I just returned from spending a three day Valentine's celebration. It is 150 miles from Richmond, Virginia and the drive through Virginia foothills and mountains could not be more beautiful. My husband and I take this trip once or twice a year and we are always happy with the service and the amenities. There are all kinds of things for the kids as well. If you eat at the resort it can be pricey, but there are some great breakfast spots very close by and several up scale restaurants. The Homestead also has a complementary tea every afternoon from 3-4 pm.

Well, my wife and I stayed for two nights. We found the Hotel to be in general disrepair. Old colonial charm and spacious grounds are tainted by the fact that outside the paint is peeling, and some of the buildings are being neglected. Inside it fairs better. Needs a lot of TLC. The room with a view was average. The bed was just OK and the wall paper looked as if a monkey had installed the seems. The in room chair was comfortable. Climate control was adequate, and the cleaning service was good. Also, booked a day at The Spa. A Massage and run of the amenities, Including the mineral pool. The inside of the Spa was OK. The heated relaxation chairs were nice, complete with a soothing video wall. The Herbal Cocoon dry heat sauna was nice as well. The massage therapist was talented. Again, traveling outside to the pool area was disappointing. The deck area was in need of repair, the furniture was not well maintained, and after paying over $400 for access to the spa and a 50 minute massage, they wanted me to pay for a cushioned seat! The mineral pool was pleasant, but again, falling apart. Grabbing the handrail on the mineral pool steps, led to it pulling out of the ground. Sides of the pools were speckled with algae and tiles were missing in front of hot tub entrance. Also, the outdoor sauna did not function. Sadly the “resort” had no real service poolside. The plastic menu I found lying on the ground was from last summer and was in fact useless. As time went on we visited a few of the eateries and rented a late night movie fo 20 bucks. I could not help to arrive at another unfortunate conclusion. This “would be”stunning Omni property was in fact, over the top with greed. Prices were not in line with the experience. Example: Medium coffee, ice tea, or soda, $3.75. Dinner for two at Jefferson’s, an average steak house, over $200.00. Mediocre caesar side salad $12.00. Bowl of Italian soup, $9.00. Final disappointment was that many of options were closed down. Perhaps because it was a Monday? You might be wondering, did anything meet the standard for a pricey resort? YES! The people. The staff was friendly and seemed to understand where they were working. However the folks at Omni need to step up to the professional level of their employees and take much better care of this clearly precious landmark.

My husband & I loved our stay at The Homestead. Super Friendly staff at a beautiful & elegant hotel. One of the friendliest front desk attendants we have had the pleasure to meet. We highly recommend it to others and we plan to stay there again some day!

We have been to the Homestead several times over the years, and it never fails to delight! The accommodations and meals are wonderful, and the amenities top notch and plentiful. There's nothing better than being surrounded by the exquisite sights and special traditions of a bygone era.

I felt the hotel was overpriced for the services we received. The indoor pool needs to be repaired. There were no towels at the pool. The female changing room did not have any towels either. The shower in the female changing room was working. I just felt we paid a lot of money for the hotel and little details were not attended to.
