The Houstonian in Houston, Texas

Contrasting sharply with the ambitious glass-covered skyscrapers around it, The Houstonian Hotel, Club & Spa – part of the LVX collection of Preferred Hotels & Resorts – is a sprawling pine tree-studded 18-acre oasis in the heart of boomtown. Ideally located midway between airports, the Galleria shopping haven, Redstone Golf Club, and a smorgasbord of restaurants and galleries, the 289-room hunting lodge-style resort feels like a country getaway, appealing to elegant urbanites as much as Texas ranch-lovers. An enormous hand-carved fireplace dominates the central Great Room, which is adorned with historic military memorabilia. Accommodations are equally masculine with strong red, golden and blue colors, wood-trimmed leather headboards, and floor-to-ceiling windows unveiling views across the lushly landscaped grounds. Amenities ooze mod opulence: complimentary wireless Internet access, 42-inch flat-screen televisions, iHome alarm clocks, technology panels, plus environmentally conscious lighting and climate control come standard. All bathrooms are outfitted with granite countertops, marble showers and complimentary high-end Verbena-scented toiletries.

The Houstonian's crown jewel is the resort's 125,000-square-foot jaw-dropping health club complete with a boxing ring, 8 tennis courts, rock climbing walls, and three outdoor pools. The snazzy fitness center has 250 diverse workout machines and 145 different exercise classes each week. The resort even provides a kids' club so guests can drop off their brood while they get in shape. Locker room facilities are extensive and feature a steam room, dry sauna, and whirlpool Jacuzzi. For post-fitness indulgence, turn to the award-winning Trellis Spa. The novel-thick water themed treatment menu of the 17,000-square-foot facility includes thermal sports massages and citrus fruit-based body scrubs. Ready for some food? Hit the freestanding clubby Manor House restaurant for a Texas Jumbo Lump Crab Cake during lunch or make dinner reservations at sterling Olivette restaurant. The lively display kitchen delights patrons savoring American traditionals prepared with a Mediterranean twist. Conclude the day (and people-watch) with a post-dinner tipple at the plush lobby Bar. No matter how guests choose to spend their days at the Houstonian, this exclusive enclave welcomes everyone in memorably grand Lone-Star-State-style.

I stayed from Thursday to Wednesday in the Houstonian, which is a very typical Texas designed hotel. The whole staff was very kind and carrying, and you felt welcome and appreciated the moment you entered the hotel. The pool area and the sports club, which can be used free of charge was also impressive, and a small run in Memorial Park is only 1km away. This was exactly what I was looking for when trying to combine business and pleasure, and I can only recommend this hotel.

We've stayed at the Houstonian the last few times we've come to Houston. The beds are comfortable and the rooms have been clean and fresh smelling. We spend most of our time at the pool and the club - my son who is 6 loves the water slide and the pool atmosphere is fun and laid back for families. The pool is open to the club members, and I've found the club members to be really friendly. There are a couple of staff who are always at the pool who really take ownership of that area and keep it safe and fun and get to know the kids. There is a fun kids area in the club for school aged kids - it was open during our first stay, but not this one, so it is good to check the hours ahead - but last time it gave us a couple of hours to enjoy the club and spa. There is a food court type of option in the club, where you can order food and smoothies ala carte, which is a nice option when we are traveling as a family. The outdoor running track was being remodeled this trip, but on our last trip my son and I had fun exploring the mile loop and he was looking forward to walking it again. The hotel has a more traditional decor that is not my personal style, but it is nicely done and when we were there during the holidays, the lobby decor was really beautiful.

I stayed at the hotel and quite frankly expected more given the reviews. It was a very average experience. Upon arrival I decided to park the car myself. I found my way to the lobby and upon check-in was handed a ticket to go back to the parking lot and put on the windshield. First, why are they charging for parking in an area where there is not shortage of parking and second, why are they having guests, post check-in have to walk all the way back to the parking garage to put something on the dash. I eventually got to my room and it was a pretty basic room. Nothing special. Two things bothered me about the room. The bathtub filled as a snail's pace and it took forever to fill and the comforter on the bed was barely a comforter and it left me cold all night. I usually measure my stay on the quality of sleep i get, and here it was below average. The next morning I did go over and use the gym. That was the highlight. It was a fantastic gym and was the highlight of my stay. If not for the gym, my ratings probably would have been worse. Finally, as I went to my meeting I was looking for the gift shop or something to get a quick snack. I was told I would have to go all the way back to the gym for that. I gave up and just went to my meeting. I would have a hard time recommending this hotel over other luxury brands.

We stayed the weekend at The Houstonian for a wedding. First the staff was extremely accommodating. This level of service is not found in many hotels. Second, the grounds are gorgeous. Beautiful trees and an environment that makes you feel you are in the country and not in a metropolis. The rooms are slightly dated but not bad. The bathrooms are very small and definitely for one person at a time. There is a jogging track that goes around the property as well as a spa. The massages are very expensive but good. $300 is a bit pricey and in our case was more than we paid for our room. Overall an excellent experience.

Every year, at the end of April, there's a conference at The Houstonian, that some of my distinguished colleagues attend regularly. This is my third visit here and my second review of the venue. I really have nothing to say but the best. The service and the grounds are so superlative that make me return. Kudos!
