The Houstonian in Houston, Texas

Contrasting sharply with the ambitious glass-covered skyscrapers around it, The Houstonian Hotel, Club & Spa – part of the LVX collection of Preferred Hotels & Resorts – is a sprawling pine tree-studded 18-acre oasis in the heart of boomtown. Ideally located midway between airports, the Galleria shopping haven, Redstone Golf Club, and a smorgasbord of restaurants and galleries, the 289-room hunting lodge-style resort feels like a country getaway, appealing to elegant urbanites as much as Texas ranch-lovers. An enormous hand-carved fireplace dominates the central Great Room, which is adorned with historic military memorabilia. Accommodations are equally masculine with strong red, golden and blue colors, wood-trimmed leather headboards, and floor-to-ceiling windows unveiling views across the lushly landscaped grounds. Amenities ooze mod opulence: complimentary wireless Internet access, 42-inch flat-screen televisions, iHome alarm clocks, technology panels, plus environmentally conscious lighting and climate control come standard. All bathrooms are outfitted with granite countertops, marble showers and complimentary high-end Verbena-scented toiletries.

The Houstonian's crown jewel is the resort's 125,000-square-foot jaw-dropping health club complete with a boxing ring, 8 tennis courts, rock climbing walls, and three outdoor pools. The snazzy fitness center has 250 diverse workout machines and 145 different exercise classes each week. The resort even provides a kids' club so guests can drop off their brood while they get in shape. Locker room facilities are extensive and feature a steam room, dry sauna, and whirlpool Jacuzzi. For post-fitness indulgence, turn to the award-winning Trellis Spa. The novel-thick water themed treatment menu of the 17,000-square-foot facility includes thermal sports massages and citrus fruit-based body scrubs. Ready for some food? Hit the freestanding clubby Manor House restaurant for a Texas Jumbo Lump Crab Cake during lunch or make dinner reservations at sterling Olivette restaurant. The lively display kitchen delights patrons savoring American traditionals prepared with a Mediterranean twist. Conclude the day (and people-watch) with a post-dinner tipple at the plush lobby Bar. No matter how guests choose to spend their days at the Houstonian, this exclusive enclave welcomes everyone in memorably grand Lone-Star-State-style.

The hotel is old school and that is not a bad thing. The rooms and decor are dated and the public areas are from a time gone by. But there is something charming about the place and that is mainly down to the attention of the staff. We found all the staff to be excellent. Very helpful, polite and friendly. This hotel is made by its people and their commitment to top customer service. The hotel is faded in places but the pool area is very pleasant and makes for an oasis in the city. Its busy with local spa members at the weekend but in the week its great. The Concierge Floor is well worth paying extra for with a decent breakfast, drinks throughout the day and snacks and desserts at certain times. The lounge offers additional space to unwind rather than spending time in the bedroom or paying for drinks in the bar. We saved a fortune having this facility as a family. Coming back to the service though, we were overwhelmed with the quality of the staff. A special mention goes to Chris Rojo, one of the concierges who after a little mishap, arranged for us to watch our soccer team Leicester City play in the Champions League in the hotel bar which was not yet open. We really appreciated his extra efforts. All the staff were great though from managers, maintenance staff, housekeeping, front of house and those in the fabulous spa. Thanks to all at the Houstonian for such a warm welcome to Texas, Houston and their special hotel. We did not want to leave.

This hotel is above and beyond top notch! From check in to departure, everyone at The Houstonian wants to ensure you are enjoying your stay. We decided to book a weekend because of the Clay Court Championships at River Oaks and it was a perfect combination of tennis watched and played at the health club. Jonathon at the pool bar was especially attentive and friendly every day. He also makes the best rum punch!

I love this hotel! The Houstonian is a great escape. The rooms are large and the bed is so comfortable. The hotel is in a park-like setting and as a guest, you are given access to an amazing health and fitness club. Room service was delicious and staff are attentive. I have also been a part of several meetings in this hotel and their conference amenities and service is excellent.

The Houstonian Hotel provides a lovely setting for a visit to Houston. It is in a park like setting so tranquil and wooded that one cannot believe its location in the middle of Houston. Yes, the bathrooms are quite small but otherwise the rooms are beautiful and the views are largely of the woods from the windows. We were not sure why they did not push the bathroom wall 4 feet further into the spacious room to make the bathrooms equal to what one sees in most hotels. Certainly we did not need a full sized couch. Even so I would stay there again since it is a special experience in a fine hotel that captures the feeling of being in Houston without the hustle and bustle. We did not have dinner there except a late night bar food experience and breakfast the next morning and those did not disappoint. Service was top drawer. The setting would be perfect for meetings and weddings. It is definitely somewhere special.

Spent three nights; hotel service is very good; well-staffed; the pool, bar, health club, etc. facilities are very crowded and busy had to wait in line for quite a bit to check in and check out for services at Trellis Spa- that could be better staffed; felt I was WAY overcharged for a simple shampoo and blowout; had the same service performed at the Galleria the previous day for one quarter of the price and more time was spent with me with a much better end result the line to receive your car is quite daunting; the entrance is way too busy; need a smoother system Concierge level was disappointing; We always opt for a concierge floor at hotels and this was not a great experience; the offerings were very average- cheddar goldfish, chocolate pretzels, cheese crackers; items on buffet were bland and nothing special- a few cheeses, crudites with ranch dressing, a bowl of apples; very simple and lackluster-not worth it at all; no bartender; limited wines; did not see any sparkling options; Room was comfortable, but nothing amazing. L'Occitane bath products Free wifi was a plus No pets allowed Would opt for something more upscale next time
