The Houstonian in Houston, Texas

Contrasting sharply with the ambitious glass-covered skyscrapers around it, The Houstonian Hotel, Club & Spa – part of the LVX collection of Preferred Hotels & Resorts – is a sprawling pine tree-studded 18-acre oasis in the heart of boomtown. Ideally located midway between airports, the Galleria shopping haven, Redstone Golf Club, and a smorgasbord of restaurants and galleries, the 289-room hunting lodge-style resort feels like a country getaway, appealing to elegant urbanites as much as Texas ranch-lovers. An enormous hand-carved fireplace dominates the central Great Room, which is adorned with historic military memorabilia. Accommodations are equally masculine with strong red, golden and blue colors, wood-trimmed leather headboards, and floor-to-ceiling windows unveiling views across the lushly landscaped grounds. Amenities ooze mod opulence: complimentary wireless Internet access, 42-inch flat-screen televisions, iHome alarm clocks, technology panels, plus environmentally conscious lighting and climate control come standard. All bathrooms are outfitted with granite countertops, marble showers and complimentary high-end Verbena-scented toiletries.

The Houstonian's crown jewel is the resort's 125,000-square-foot jaw-dropping health club complete with a boxing ring, 8 tennis courts, rock climbing walls, and three outdoor pools. The snazzy fitness center has 250 diverse workout machines and 145 different exercise classes each week. The resort even provides a kids' club so guests can drop off their brood while they get in shape. Locker room facilities are extensive and feature a steam room, dry sauna, and whirlpool Jacuzzi. For post-fitness indulgence, turn to the award-winning Trellis Spa. The novel-thick water themed treatment menu of the 17,000-square-foot facility includes thermal sports massages and citrus fruit-based body scrubs. Ready for some food? Hit the freestanding clubby Manor House restaurant for a Texas Jumbo Lump Crab Cake during lunch or make dinner reservations at sterling Olivette restaurant. The lively display kitchen delights patrons savoring American traditionals prepared with a Mediterranean twist. Conclude the day (and people-watch) with a post-dinner tipple at the plush lobby Bar. No matter how guests choose to spend their days at the Houstonian, this exclusive enclave welcomes everyone in memorably grand Lone-Star-State-style.

The Houstonian truly is a little slice of paradise in the middle of a busy city. The grounds are situated near the freeway (which gives easy access), but far enough away that you will never hear it. It is nestled back in the woods, which makes it feel more secluded. There are three pools: a lap pool, a family-style pool, and a chill-out pool. We usually prefer the third, as it's smaller, quieter, and you can sit by it and read in the shade. All three are great, though. The staff is incredible. Check-in was a breeze, and they will give you a great overview of the grounds and how to get around. The restaurant is good, and we have never had a bad meal there. The pool-side bar/restaurant is nice, too. The rooms are great. Large, clean, comfortable. I recommend spending a little extra and getting a room on the concierge floor. There is a large concierge room that has continental breakfast in the morning, appetizers before dinner, and drinks after dinner. It may not seem like much, but it's a nice touch, and it's always nice to grab a drink there after coming back from dinner. Houston has a lot of nice hotels, but the Houstonian truly stands apart. Doubtful you could find another resort-style hotel like this in the middle of the city. Do yourself a favor and check it out, whether you're in Houston on your travels, or like us, just need a little staycation and only have to drive a few miles to get there. You'll be glad you did.

Our family had a wonderful stay here. The service was truly extraordinary- offering a small fridge brought up to the room for our kid's milk and otherwise attentive, friendly and polite. The pool area was well staffed and maintained with plenty of variety for the kids. We had a fantastic time here and would highly recommend it.

Nice hotel with an outstanding spa and gym. Great location off the highway where you don't hear or see the traffic. Close to the Galleria and a lot of restaurants. Two things kept it from being a 5. The refrigerator in my room was never cold. Second, breakfast was below average. The scrambled eggs were undercooked amd runny. The chicken fried steak was bland, and the jalapeno cream gravy didn't have any jalapenos. No spices at all. I highly recommend the hotel, just eat somewhere else.

So many amenities we spent one of the days just hanging out at the hotel. Nice size room, great staff, good food and great location. The staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. Housekeeping was very prompt, spoke perfect English and went above and beyond to help us. We will definitely be staying here again.

We booked last minute for a quick weekend and to enjoy the ease of being in the heart of Houston without the frustration of the hassle and bussel that so many other hotels experience with traffic etc. Our trip was centered around Houston Restarants Week. All the places we were focused on were in the area of Heights and Uptown which made this a great location. A perfect location. If your looking to just do the Galleria even better. Rooms are spacious, bathroom is small. Very small. Must close the door to use but nice. Hotel is one of the most prestigious in old Houston terms and continues it's historic lineage. You will not be disappointed with your stay here. 3 pools. Kids, laps and adults. World class fitness center. Outdoor mile long track through the hidden woods of Houston.....and Private. Complimentary shuttle service to the Galleria area, restaurants etc.... Ask for Noble, he is the best. The Houstonian is one of the best places to stay and affordable. Some reviews have stated rooms are not updated but not true. The hotel is iconic, nestled within the oaks and pines of Houston. Great turn down service. Your pampred and never realize just how so. Rates are higher during the week because travelers know where to stay but the Friday to Sunday is a great value. Self parking is an option. Still $15 per day. Valet is $28. If you self park be prepared for a semi walk but don't be discouraged. Do follow the signs and take the elevators to floor 2. Lobby is on 1 but Nobody can get there unless you walk down 7 steps. Leave your bags at the stairs and check in! A Thumbs Up from the traveller!
