Capella Ixtapa in Ixtapa, Mexico

Waves crash on giant boulders at the base of Capella Ixtapa, a secluded retreat nestled in acacia-filled cliffs about 20 minutes from Zihuatanejo. The open-air design of the villas and restaurants, where guests can dine on red-snapper ceviche with a panoramic view of the ocean it came from, integrates nature into all of its elements. Infinity pools take center stage here, as well as spa treatments in rustic surroundings.

Watch the daybreak sky turn pink over island blips on the Pacific. Get lost on forest paths before finding your way to a white daybed overlooking the shore below. Join a local guide on a tour of Petatlán, learning about Mexican traditions, tasting medicinal herbs, and swimming in a lush lagoon. Watch the sunset. The signature basil margaritas flow freely.

There is not one complaint I have about this resort. Wow, just wow. The views, the rooms, the pool, the service, just over the top. Having your own pool was a ridiculously amazing splurge. We used the heck out of it. In the evening if you request, they will heat it for you. It is like a nice warm bath to lounge in after dinner. The 5 p.m. delivery of cervezas, chips and guacamole, the morning housekeeping and evening turn down service (where they again replace all the wet towels) this place is 9 stars, honestly. Had the food been better and not 5 times the price of other high quality restaurants, we may never have left the resort. It is definitely a weak point and very unfortunate, given that you are nearly captive there. The Seafood restaurant had entrees starting at $35. Seafood on display in plastic bags and wine starting at $80 a bottle in US prices. Just over the top. Lunches were ok (oddly the american food was better than the Mexican food) and we usually ended up ordering room service to enjoy on our deck and then went out for dinner via taxi. In closing, we adored our time here. It would have been FAR better with better food, but that's what taxis are for!

My husband and I spent 9 nights at Cala de Mar in celebration of our 25th wedding anniversary. It was a singular experience. The ambience, the staff and service were exquisite. All of our needs and desires were met with smiles and graciousness. The spa, the restaurants, the vistas, the pools, including our own private pool, were heaven. We can't remember ever having a more relaxing and satisfying vacation. We will definitely return and highly recommend this resort to any and all. It rates 5 stars in anyone's category.

Amazing resort with amazing view of the ocean. Super friendly staff right from the main gate-reception-phone. Beautiful rooms, fantastic breakfast. Definitely worth a stay if you want to make memories.

My wife and I visited Cala de Mar ( formerly Capella Ixtapa) for 8 days. It was a 2nd visit. I want to give it 5 stars but the one area that I cannot is around food. First the awesome parts. The staff is phenomenal! Super friendly, helpful and everyone there is great! The resort is the best I've ever been to. We were there in 2010 and when I asked my wife where she wanted to go for our anniversary, there was no question. Back to this resort. My only comment is around the food. First of all, the prices in the resort for food and drink are almost NY prices. They charge in dollars and dinner and drinks for 2 are very high considering that it's Mexico. For a $7.00 ten minute cab ride into Ixtapa, you can eat and drink for 1/2 price or less. The other part of that is sometimes, you don't know the price until the bill comes. Few written menus with exact prices. That being said, the food and drink is very good and we weren't scrimping but we had 1/2 our dinners in the resort and half in town. Room service was great. The quality of food was still very good. Just be aware of the cost. We would still go back for a third visit without question. The rooms, plunge pools, overall resort is still top shelf! We really enjoyed and did not see any difference at all as a result of the name change. We loved it and plan on returning whenever we can!

The resort is beautiful, peaceful and allows you to completely relax. Yes, it's hot (82-87 degrees year-round) but pools are everywhere, including your own private one. The resort is incredibly well designed architecturally with the terrain and views at center stage. The service was Ritz-Carlton level, every staff member was happy to help - special recognition to Karla (host), Miguel (bartender), Felix (breakfast server), Francisco (pool master), George (CS manager) and others that were great but I accidentally forgot the names! The food was wonderful, especially breakfast and the Seafood Market restaurant. We only left the resort to shop in Ixtapa a couple of days, but there are great bike trails from the resort to town and the beach (the resort has bikes for your use). The only service that was not up to par with the others is the spa, they were nice but not great with our facials or massages. If you're not from the region I recommend getting pesos before leaving your place of origin, most shops and restaurants accept US dollars but you can't really negotiate and you pay more by using the dollar. We hope to go back to the resort someday soon!
