Turtle Bay Resort in Kahuku, Hawaii

If Turtle Bay Resort's idyllic locale looks familiar, you might have seen Magnum P.I., the original Hawaii Five-O or Forgetting Sarah Marshall – all of them filmed at Oahu's fabled North Shore. The resort unveiled newly renovated rooms in 2014 that utilize cool Polynesian colors and natural rattan. Chase your pipeline dreams at one of world's premier surf schools or wander to the privacy of a windswept beach. Part of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, Turtle Bay's waters offer sanctuary to whales, monk seals, green turtles and dolphins.

Go for a morning run on 12 miles of seaside paths through marshes, beaches and Banyan forests. Keep an eye out for sea turtles basking in the sun. Check out what's happening on the Banzai pipeline – if it's wintertime, waves could reach 50 feet. Retreat to calmer waters to relax or paddle board. Feast on Kona coffee-rubbed rack of New Zealand lamb overlooking the churning tide at Pa'akai restaurant.

Despite being in need of an upgrade, I would highly recommend this hotel and would love to go back soon! The location is definitely the highlight and I expect every room would have at least a partial ocean view. You have the choice of surfing on one side and a calmer beach on the other which is good for snorkelling. There were not big shoals of fish but we saw many different species. We also had no problem getting beach chairs when we needed them (included in 'resort fee' along with the snorkel gear). Our room was large and comfortable with a spacious bathroom and lots of storage space. Unless you want to drive quite a way expect to eat at the hotel and pay a premium. However, we enjoyed all the food we had including the Sunset Bar snacks, Roys and Lei Lei's. All staff members we dealt with were friendly and all said Aloha to guests around the property. It is a place to chill out and relax but there are also plenty of activities from tennis to horse riding to walking the trails. The Polynesian Cultural Centre is nearby - stop at the shrimp trucks on the way for lunch!

We enjoyed an ocean view room that included a tub and large shower. The room was relatively spacious, albeit a little out dated. The staff were friendly and helpful also, we enjoyed a tasty pancakes in bed. We dined at the restaurant pa’akai and the food was delectable. Everything was pretty good, there is perhaps room to improve to cocktails. Overall this resort is a fantastic option.

We enjoyed staying at Turtle Bay and using it as base to visit the North Shore. The hotel needs a refresh, it is very 1980s. During our stay the hotel changed hands and the staff said they hoped it would lead to some investment in the property. We did a tennis clinic which was great and used the pool. The hotel obviously focuses on golf and surfing also. We enjoyed the restaurant Rays - down by the beach, but the breakfast room and breakfast was very forgettable. Grab something from the lounge instead. Good place but don't set your expectations too high.

Was really looking forward to our 2 nights here before we headed off to Waikiki, and sometimes that sets me up for a big old disappointment, but not this time. Loved how private the location was with gorgeous, uncrowded beaches to explore, but also how close we were to Haleiwa, Kualoa Ranch, Sunset Beach, etc. Pool service was great (loved their Lava Flows) and, if you're a rider, the private horseback ride is definitely worth the money. So rare to get to do a little loping on what seemed to be genuinely fresh and happy horses. Can't wait to come back.

Dear Turtle Bay Resort, Thank you for treating us so well. The views were stunning and the property was beautiful. But really the staff is what made our nine day stay special... from the moment we arrived and were treated with a friendly “aloha” from the valets, the wonderful front desk staff, the daily “how is your day?” from the lovely housekeepers, the great conversation and service with a smile from every single restaurant and bar staff we encountered at the resort, Brenda and Mureko down at the beach hut who went above and beyond to make sure our beach day was perfect, the concierges on the vista level as well as the helpful guidepost staff and the ladies that make a mean latte downstairs in the lobby...thank you... you treated us like family and it’s truly appreciated. My husband and I are not really into the crowds of resorts generally but we felt Turtle bay achieved a great balance having something to appeal to every kind of traveler.....if you like to live it up at the pool in a party atmosphere it’s there... but if you want a calmer stay it’s available without being overwhelmed by the latter. Your kids can have a slide at the pool or surf with a dog! This isn’t the four seasons so don’t expect it... but it is a beautiful property with decent food and amazing views with just enough to do to keep you occupied and not so much you don’t relax.... Mahalo!
