The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua in Kapalua, Maui

The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua, hidden within the folds of Maui's verdant landscape, is the picture of posh. This decorated AAA Five-Diamond Award beachfront resort, which recently underwent a $180-million transformation, sits on a 54-acre expanse and is more magnificent than ever. From the airy guest rooms to the half-dozen restaurants, The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua will amaze even the most seasoned of travelers. Its stylish rooms boast new furnishings and amenities, including dark wood floors, flat-panel televisions, sleek marble bathrooms with showers and separate tubs, spacious lanais, and island-inspired artwork. Insomniacs will enjoy the convenience of the 24-hour ocean view fitness center and yoga studio. Perhaps the resort's piece de resistance, though, is the addition of a new 17,500-square-foot spa retreat boasting 15 plush treatment rooms, private outdoor shower gardens, a pair of al fresco couples cabanas, plus relaxation areas fashioned after volcanic stone grottos and outfitted with whirlpools, steam rooms and saunas.

The resort, framed by a pair of championship golf courses, offers savory restaurants including the new Japanese destination Kai Sushi. You will also enjoy direct beach access, cultural offerings and the resort's own eco-adventure program. Unwind in the 10,000-square-foot tri-level swimming pool, surrounded by a sun deck twice its size, or spend time with your family at the new children's pool. Stay close to home as you explore the island's western edge with its collection of bays and trio of sandy beaches. Nature lovers can traipse along winding trails brushing past an abundance of fragrant flowers and native trees planted centuries ago by ancestral Polynesians and Hawaiians.

We loved our time here and only have minimal complaints. This being our first 5 diamond resort experience, we don't have any other places to make a comparison, but we thought the Ritz Kapalua was fabulous. Our room was so clean, the location of the resort is breathtaking, the grounds very well kept, and the staff attentive and friendly. We loved having our own lanai on our room with an ocean view, and it seems almost all the rooms had the same. It was nice they had an umbrella in the closet because we needed it. We did experience rain two days, and I'm not sure if that was normal or not. The rest of our stay was perfectly sunny and perfect temperature of not too hot but never cold. Kapalua Beach nearby was perfect for snorkelling and they will shuttle you there for free as well as give you towels to bring at the front door while you wait for the shuttle. We bought a cheap snorkel set at the ABC instead of renting some. I wished I had spent more time here as the variety of fish was better than it was on our paid snorkel cruise! We also love the Sea Horse restaurant and ate there three times seeing whales each time. My minor complaints for our experience were that the shower head in the bathroom only had one pressure setting, which was very soft and took awhile to rinse my hair; the only way to retrieve your car is by valet which is nice, but tips add up quickly when you are in and out through the day; and they need more lights in the pool area and sidewalks for night time as there are many spots you almost can't see where you are walking. You also get a work out walking around here as the buildings and grounds are very large, but we enjoyed all the sights.

The Ritz property was beautiful and the service was excellent. We were upgraded to a suite and it was a very nice room with an awesome kitchen. The negatives to our room were that it had a connecting door to the adjacent suite. There were at least two families with small crying kids that were in that room in the week we stayed at the hotel. The crying in the middle of the night and arguing parents sounded like they were in our room because it was so loud. Also the sleeper sofa in that room that we used slanted so that the feet were higher than the head so it was not a good place to sleep comfortably. The food as expected was extremely expensive - room service breakfast for 2 eggs was $30! The Kapalua store that is in walking distance is a great option if you aren't looking to eat all of your meals at the hotel. We were on the road a lot for excusions so we would stop and get breakfast on our way out. Loved the fried rice with over easy eggs. We enjoyed their breakfast and lunch options and also found it convenient for restocking water and snacks. Also tried several of the baked good which were delicious!! The enormous cinnamon bun and the lilikoi pie were favorites! Also an easy place to pick up some souvineers. It was nice to have beach access from the property to D. T. Fleming beach. It is a beautiful beach. We stayed to the left side of the beach and it was less crowded there. There is public entrance to the beach on the right. We enjoyed snorkeling and seeing sea turtles along the rocks. We found it to be an easy spot to snorkel and saw turtles there every time along the rocks. We went out a little further and saw more fish. We liked it more than Honolua Bay. We also walked along the top of the rocks and could see the turtles from above. We also enjoyed the trail by the golf course that went down onto the rocks by the ocean. There were lots of tide pools there that we enjoyed checking out. Liked that pool had sunscreen provided as well as fruit infused water. They also have transportation that goes from the hotel down to the beach. We didn't mind walking but we did take a ride up to the hotel one time when it was about to rain. The hotel pool was beautiful although we preferred the beach. Hot tub was nice, but one of the two hot tubs was out of service for the entire week and the one working hot tub got kind of crowded at night. One of the staff members told us about a garden on the property that we wouldn't have known about otherwise. There were various plants and fruit trees there - watch out for the snails! All in all we had a great week there, the property is beautiful and we wish we would've had more time to just relax down at the beach. Also my husband and father in law played the Plantation Course at Kapalua and loved it - the views from the course were unbelievable. Would have loved to have had lunch at the clubhouse but ran out of time. View from there was gorgeous!

My wife and I were on our first trip to Hawaii so we put a lot of thought of where we would stay. We knew we wouldn't want to do Oahu for the week because it was our anniversary so we wanted to go some where not so busy or a lot of tourist, a place romantic. Maui was the place for us! We visited in September 2017 with my birthday on the 8th and our anniversary on the 10th. We were a bit skeptical to stay at the Ritz because we read reviews that this was the rainy windward site of the island. That was not an issue, I don't think it rained the entire week we were there. We flew in from Mississippi so we arrived late our first day. You should have seen it, my wife and I exiting our rental greeted by valet nervous if we would still have our room and as we turn the corner to the front desk we hear "Aloha Mr and Mrs Bryant we've been expecting you.", greeting us with seashell leis. The check in was so smooth and fast I didn't even remember it. We are Ritz-Carlton Rewards members so needless to say we took advantage of our yearly Club Level upgrades and it was sooooooo worth it. I have to tell you if you stay at the Ritz and don't upgrade to Club Level, you are cheating yourself. The Club Lounge staff were SUPERB along with the food. My wife and I did the Haleakala Crater our first morning there because it would be less brutal on the senses doing it like that we heard, the most MAJESTIC sight our eyes have ever seen...but we warn, dress warm and in layers. From there we made a stop at Wal-Mart and we had no other reason the leave the resort grounds after that. From golfing lessons and a free round at the golf championship Bay Course, Complimentary photo session on the grounds of the resort, chillaxin at the multi level pool, to exploring scenic cliff views in walking distance, walking the soft sandy beach. The piece de resistance, THE SPA!!!!! Do yourself a favor when you go and save a day for the spa. The only thing we didn't do that we wanted to was the Road to Hana, we ended up visiting some family in Waikiki for a day and missed Kapalua more than we missed home. Great shopping in Oahu I must say. We were worried about our last night there because we had a late flight and didn't want to have to check out early and have a load of time on our hands. Well the front desk staff put that worry to ease with a 2pm check out. The housekeeping staff were outstanding, along with the valets and the bell men and the pool staff and the restaurant staff and the......did I mention this was the most AWESOMEST vacation we have even been on. We will definitely be back and we can't wait.

We stayed on the club level and had a great experience with the staff and club amenities. However, each morning we were woken up by golf course grooming machines at 5:20. We asked to be moved to a different side of the hotel, as we wanted to sleep-in while away from our kiddos. We were assured by the front desk that the grooming was only scheduled on that first morning and that we would not be disturbed again. Sadly, we were awakened each morning by the machinery and lights and were unable to get the full relaxation experience that we had hoped. Additionally, there were soiled plates and food from room service across our hallway that sat out and began to small badly, for 24+ hours. Hotel staff and maid service walked right by the dishes and food numerous times without removing them. Upon check-out, we were rewarded some Marriott points ( which we don't use) for the inconveniences, which was not much of a compensation, considering. I would have given four stars despite the noise disturbance and hallway uncleanliness, but when contacting the hotel and again Ritz guest relations, I got absolutely no response. Multiple email attempts were made including an email to the hotel manager. No response.
