Our first trip, but wife and I thought it deserves a Forbes 5 rating for food, accommodations and Pete Dye Golf. Its a 48 room restored mansion that is like Greenbrier used to be, but with finer service and hospitality. From the moment we were cleared through the gate, Trevor in guest services, Lisa, Marilyn, Angel and Joseph the golf pro made it a memorable experience. Golf, spa, food, hiking, archery, flyfishing, tennis and 3 pools (and one Adult only)....the list of possibilities is long. We'll return....regularly. Its that good. Also, its owned by same group that owns several other 5 star properties: Jefferson in Richmond, Sanctuary at Kiawah, Hermitage in Nashville and Inn at Harbor town.....we been to all of them and this one is also a gem.

This is one of my favorite hotels in the USA. It doesn't get much more charming and memorable than this. Excellent rooms, service, location, views, golf course, dining, pool(s). Pair your stay with a trip into nearby Charlottesville and you will have a fantastic western Virginia stay.

First of all, the good: this property is nestled in the rolling hills of Virginia and beautifully situated on a hill overlooking a grand golf course. Make sure to ask for a golf course facing room. The American Express package is wonderful and gives you free breakfast, room upgrade and resort credit. The staff is VERY friendly, helpful and professional. In fact, they remembered my name the entire time of my visit. The outdoor salt water infinity pool is AMAZING!!! large enough to swim laps, heated, clean and elegant. Overlooks the large open sky and golf course. The grounds have been meticulously landscaped by a lovely couple whom I met and they have done an outstanding job. The rooms were well appointed, and the best part was the N'Espresso machine for coffee in each room...what a treat! The food in the main hotel restaurant during the day is delicious and the breakfast was also very good in a lovely more upscale dining room. Drinking water sitting in fresh fruit throughout the property was a nice touch. Even though I don't golf, the golf center allowed me to drive the golf cart around the large property....really impressive! ok, a few suggestions: it's hard for me not to notice all the small details. having worked in restaurant and hotel design for 30 years...in order for this property to be stunning, they need to tend to the details. No valet parking when I arrived, so I had to lug all my suitcases from the other parking lot. No drinking water at the main pool for two days, so had to go inside through the main restaurant to ask for a glass of water. They need to have an attendant walking the property throughout the day to ensure little things are done: like picking up used towels and cups at the pool when people leave... and emptying trash cans, as well as answering any questions guests have. I would suggest leaving cold bottled water AT the front desk when people check in, instead of asking a guest if they would like water... The fresh flower arrangements around the property are a nice touch. The more casual pub restaurant and small indoor/outdoor pool are in desperate need of a remodel....the pool is starting to show its age and the stone surface is coming up and broken. The in-ground Jacuzzi is small, but hot, which is noce...but the above ground hot tub was dirty and lukewarm and the water needed to be changed. The food at the pub is just ok, not great. The "spa" is not really a spa that I am used to...it is more like a few rooms with massage tables and a waiting area. To compete with the big boys like the Salamander and Nemocolin, they really need to invest in a state of the art spa. Remember that this hotel is old, so it does not have some of the modern features that you might expect. But it is very nicely decorated and the customer service is excellent.

We were at Keswick on a rainy weekend but loved to stay inside to enjoy the luxurious and atmospheric lobby hall and other public rooms. Nice books, great sitting area in front of the chimney. The reception was very warm and welcoming, more private than in a usual hotel. Breakfast was great and with very good service as well. There were complimentary cold drinks and cookies in the lobby all day. Lots of pictures and descriptions of the resort's history and its visitors, very interesting. I would recommend this special place to everybody.
