(No free) Breakfast in America

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 9 hours ago

Full disclosure: we’d booked this property (for a May 2024 stay) with Expedia in October 2023. When booking (see pic), the rate included/confirmed a free continental breakfast (for up to four people) per day. Nearer to the stay we noticed reviews suggesting the free continental breakfast was no more, and that a measly $25 PER ROOM credit per day was now ‘given’ from the $40 + tax USA scam charge (otherwise known as a ‘Daily Amenity Fee’) for breakfast. Someone at the hotel confirmed this in response to an email I sent (although they didn’t offer the common courtesy of including their name on the reply) and ghosted me from the point I asked to see a copy of the breakfast menu (attached for helpfulness) so I could work out how much extra this was going to cost. TLDR: The hotel wasn’t going to honour the deal they’d hooked me up on. NB. A couple we sat alongside at breakfast - who had booked direct - had the exact same experience, so this isn’t one the management can blame on Expedia. More to follow. On to the stay… Thankfully we came across a free parking space two blocks away (on Eaton St), saving ourselves the $25+tax-a-night charge (if using the hotel spots). The hotel location is 10/10; hard to beat. Close to the action, but far away enough from the noisy/chaotic now somewhat Benidorm-esque Duval St. Yes, the numerous semi-private jets landing are noisy/bothersome, but the rich folk have got to get to KW somehow. The Marquesa (at least during our stay) attracts a non-diverse, wealthy older crowd, some of whom weren’t very mobile - a demographic the historic building with multiple levels doesn’t necessarily lend itself to. Turned up at a little after 12 fully aware it was unlikely our room would be ready. It wasn’t. We were told we’d be emailed when it was ready. We weren’t: “There was a problem with your email”. There wasn’t (because the invoice slid in without a hitch). It was, however, ready when we hit reception at 2.30. No mention of breakfast situation, where to eat etc, or fees. A charming, friendly gentlemen showed us to our room (12). Beautiful and airy, nice bathroom and lovely (shared) balcony. Lovely drapes on windows, although the French door’s feeble blinds were no match for the Key West sunshine. Drapes badly needed (unless you are able to sleep as the sun comes up and/or in the afternoon, you might want to avoid these rooms). Effective, albeit noisy, A/C that tends to work less well during the wee small hours (it seemed to turn off for longer periods during the night). Soaps/toiletries and towels top-rate. Some details lacking in room and very messy socket situation that could so easily be rectified by someone with an eye for detail. Substandard WiFi; spotty at best. Welcome card with someone else’s name on it in our room: sloppy. Two small bottles of complimentary water; very mean-fisted given the price point of this establishment. Provide six bottles of ‘normal’ mineral water versus two fancy Evian, maybe? Cheap. Was initially concerned that the bedding wasn’t fresh because pillowcases un-ironed. After a conversation with reception, the same gentlemen who showed us to room brought up new pillows and explained they weren’t (or aren’t) ironed, hence the confusion. We were told our room would be turned down that night (yes, it’s part of that amenity fee con…see pic). It wasn’t. When we asked the next morning why, we were told it’s only done on the second night: these lot really do have a (often nonsensical, but blatantly dishonest in this case) answer for everything. The pool/garden area is an oasis. Beautifully kept gardens and two pools, one warmer than the other: perfect. Plenty of space (during our stay) and towels on hand. Breakfast Picture-perfect dining room with shiny coffee pots and a lovely vibe, albeit a little warm for my liking. Friendly servers. Now… back to that mystical $25 PER ROOM credit. If you think this princely sum is going to get you a breakfast for two, continental or otherwise, think again, unless you can survive on a $12 per-item-pastry* and a juice. *For the record, a continental breakfast - for those who don’t know - usually consists of (as a minimum) pastries and baked goods, fruits, toast, juice and coffee/tea. If you’ve got this far, what’s my verdict? While many of you reading this (who haven’t lost the will to live) won’t be bothered by the Marquesa’s opportunistic nickel and diming, I work hard for the money I make and try not to fritter it away on faux, lacklustre services. Because of this, I expect to get what I pay for (I didn’t), and don’t expect dishonesty when dealing with establishments of this ilk. Had they simply honoured the rate/deal I had paid for, this would have been a much brighter review. Likewise, don’t ghost customers simply because you know they won’t like the answer (for good reason).

Walk to everything, really charming, staff were lovely, free coffee station was a bonus. Restaurant on site was really good. Rooms are really nicely done, clean and spacious. Only issue was no wifi in the room, you had to be on the patio to conect.

Wonderful retreat!

A lovely, lovely hotel in the midst of old town but a quiet neighborhood. They have 2 properties…the main one has 27 rooms and 2 pools(cool and a warmer one)….the one down the street has 17 rooms and one pool. It is not a problem though…we were not with our friends but it is a 2 minute walk. The staff are all superb and helpful and the rooms are spotless! You can walk barefoot on the floor and have clean feet and not feel a crumb or piece of dirt!! We did a b/b stay and have the beignets with your breakfast!
