Soneva Kiri in Ko Kut, Thailand

On the island of Koh Kood, a large and undeveloped tropical wilderness 50 miles off the Thai mainland, Soneva Kiri is a far cry from resorts in commercialized Phuket or Koh Samui. Rustic-chic villas, made sustainably from recycled wood to resemble the stilted fishing villages of the neighboring countryside, are some of the largest in the world. Serpentine private infinity pools surround sunken pillow lounges overlooking the ocean from a vantage point high in the hills. If ever you’ve dreamed of living in a tree house, this is your destination.

Listen to the rainforest wake up as you lounge on your deck in the day’s first glimmering rays of sun. Walk with local schoolchildren on their way to classes in Ao Salad village. Stop at a beekeeper’s house for a taste of honey straight from the comb. Explore the lush coastline. Luxuriate in your outdoor rain shower before traveling to dinner, where a custom-designed menu of fresh fish is served just for you at the base of a waterfall.

My husband and I booked Soneva Kiri from Oct. 2-6, and on Oct. 1 we received call from booking agent and hotel, saying that the hotel private jet had technical problem and couldn't pick us up on Oct.2. We have to take public transportation to go to hotel. Both agent and hotel contact said when we arrive at the hotel, GM will be meeting us to send apology and discuss our compensation plan. Without any choice, we started our long (5 hours!) and horrible journey. We first took a 45min domestic flight from Bangkok to Trat, it was a budget airline economy class and only some cold snacks were served during the lunch time flight. Straight after the flight, we went on a van for 50 min drive to a pier. We were already very hungry by then and expecting at least some sandwich on the van but actually there was only water available. After 50min drive we were taken to a small speed boat for another 70min ride, and it was the start of a real disaster! The speed boat was small with just a top but no window. When it drives at full speed on the sea, the wave, the wind and the rain came from everywhere beating on our face and body. For the entire 70min, all of us including two small kids were directly exposed to the cold wind and the heavy rain. By the time we arrive at the hotel pier, we were wet from inside out, starving and freezingly cold already. I felt like i were a smuggling refugee rather than coming to enjoy holiday and my husband was so mad and kept asking why i booked this hotel. Our Ms. friday said sorry to us and took us to spa for a relaxing treatment, which was nice. However, we waited for a formal explanation and apology from the hotel management for four days but nobody ever said anything to us, just like the horrible experience never happened. When we are about the leave the hotel, the villa operation manager came to us and gave us a return voucher which gives us one night free stay valid for one year. It looks ok but after we take a careful look, the stay will be subject to almost 2 months' blackout period and full of restrictions and preconditions. This is almost like a useless piece of paper to us that i can never use. I myself once worked in hospitality industry. I still remember my boss (the GM) told me that the Golden Rule in hospitality industry is to treat your customers as first priority. Looking at how Soneva Kiri treated customers: the technical problem of the jet was not caused by the customers but you let the customers bear the result. Customers paid a high price to enjoy the privacy, luxury and comfort at Soneva Kiri, and in turn you let the customers took the long, tiring, starving, wet and cold journey to the hotel. After the horrible experience, your hotel left the customers aside without any explanation not to mention apology. It won't be too difficult to rent a separate jet for transporting customers but unfortunately you chose to save cost. It is much easier to rent a fully covered boat to pick up customers, but you chose to send an open boat on a rainy cold day for a 70min pick-up. It was simple for management to at least call and explain to customer, but you chose to do nothing during our stay. Hospitality industry is a people business and customer satisfaction is vital. Hope your hotel can care more about customers in the future.

This is my second visit to Soneva Kiri in three years, the perfect retreat setting and the great service will certainly bring me back again. Pampered in the idyllic natural surroundings with impeccable service that exceed high expectations. Staffs are extremely friendly as usual and always carry a warm welcoming smile. The villa is spacious, comfortable with a rustic touch that blends in perfectly with the environment. Thanks to our Ms Friday Tida who take care of everything we need this time and it was fantastic to see our Ms Friday Chompoo who take care of us on our last visit. Special thanks to the General Manager Mr Godfrey Vas and his team that make a perfect holiday comes true. George Ngan

I had a wonderful experience at Soneva Kiri. I went there on end of September 2017. I have been there for 3days 2 nights. Air transportation was nice but not enough air con and hot in plane. The resort is very fantastic. Food was very good and very delicious. The service in the property is very good and the staffs are very good. Ms. Friday Khun Amp was very warm welcome to me. Thank you so much Khun Amp. I am really enjoy stay with Soneva Kiri. I cannot wait to come back for a second visit. Special Thanks to Mr. Godfrey Vas and the whole Soneva Team for taking care for me.

We stayed 4 days 3 nights during early September. The air transportation was nice and safe. The plane was a bit old and need some interior renovation. Our villa was Cliff pool suit. The room was Ok. Our restroom had some smell. At 4:00 am of everyday, there was a noise from the ceiling above the restroom and we had to wake up at 4:00 am. everyday. I thought that was a rat. Food was very good and very delicious especially Benz restaurant. We really loved this. The services from staffs were excellent. According to the rainy seasons, we didn't used the observatory and outdoor cinema. During our stay, there were mosquitoes in every areas. This was terrible and we didn't enjoy our stay. Because of we stay in low seasons, the resort closed some restaurant in each day and we had to use the restaurant that they want. I thought this was not fair for us. I chose this period of stay because of my wife's birthday and we had to limit our facility because of low season reason. By the way, we still love this resort and we will try another seasons.

We have just returned from a week in Soneva Kiri with our teenage children. Despite having travelled widely and been fortunate enough to stay at some amazing properties nothing has ever compared to the Soneva Kiri experience and I don't expect any other resort to even come close in the future. Bookended by amazing private flights from BKK the service is beyond compare. Our Ms Friday Tida anticipated our every need and ensured that every need was catered for. Our 2 bed beach villa No.6 was perfectly located on the beach and near to central hub but still afforded great privacy. As other reviewers have stated the "rooms" if you can call them that are huge with beautifully designed outdoor and indoor spaces, particularly the bathroom areas. If I have any complaint it would be that the lighting can be rather confusing but after a few days we managed to get the hang of it all. There are not many properties where a deluge of monsoon rain can be enjoyed but sitting on one of the many outdoor seating areas reading a book and relaxing whilst the rain fell in buckets was very enjoyable. The weather, it has to be said, was a bit mixed but despite that we managed to go on a tour of Koh Kood which provided a fascinating contrast to Soneva, go snorkelling on the reef which was spectacular, go up the treepod, eat at all the restaurants and visit the waterfall. The breakfasts were amazing as was the Asian buffet. The View was a very romantic location for dinner although it was perhaps our least favourite foodwise and Benz provided the best Thai food we have ever eaten. Service from the charming staff was personalised and very charming. Due to the heavy swells common during monsoon it was not possible to visit the North Beach apart from one fleeting visit but I could see how wonderful that option would be. Thoroughly recommended.
