Pimalai Resort & Spa in Ko Lanta, Thailand

Pimalai Resort & Spa is located on the southern tip of Koh Lanta, far from the north’s commercial buzz. Here the buzz comes from cicadas inhabiting dense tropical vegetation, where contemporary Thai-style rooms and villas nestle into the hillside. Rich orange, pink and lime green Thai fabrics complement dark teakwood flooring and rattan curtains, and throughout the property, pagodas and infinity pools conjure tranquility. At the base of the hills, a wide swath of white-sand beach leads to the Andaman Sea.

Lounge on a daybed on the shores of an azure bay and work up an appetite for lunch, a chicken salad sandwich with an Asian twist of pakchoy, lime and sweet chili dressing. Board a boat bound for Koh Lanta National Marine Park, whose rocky cliffs are home to mammoth monitor lizards and curious macaques. Hike in undisturbed wilderness. Return to the resort for a sundowner perched high above Ba Kantiang Bay.

We met the pick up service at Krabi airport and were driven to Pimalai’s private pier, which took about an hour. We were then given some drinks and cold towels, before we continued our transfer on the speed boat for another hour. This was a great way to transfer to a hotel. When approaching we could see the resort and it’s beautiful secluded location. On arrival, we were given flower necklaces and were driven to the reception on golf carts. We stayed on the beachside (not in the villas) and the room was very nice and had a view. We signed up for 2 dinners in the resort: one was in the seven seas and the other one a seafood buffet on the beachside. Both times, the food was good. During the seafood bbq, there was even freshly grilled lobster, oysters and sushi. It was my birthday when we had the dinner in the seven seas and at one stage the staff was singing ‘happy birthday’ and brought me a cake, which was very nice. The breakfast was very nice and really 5 Stars – in Thailand for me is that the case when the hotel has mangoes on offer, which was the case. I also had the pleasure to enjoy the spa. It is so nicely located in a tropic garden with waterfalls, so that alone getting to the therapy room calms you down. The massage was one of the best I ever had, so I had to go two times. After the massage, there is tea served next to a koi pond, which is really nice. Prices are high, but so are the standards of the service, so to me fully okay. The location with its beautiful private beach was perfect. We also enjoyed both pools. When writing this, I just want to go back. We will be back for sure and fix the 2 mistakes we made: stay in a pool villa and stay longer!

I went without any expectations and had no time to checkout the resort before travelling. Everything was first class - great restaurants, great spa, fantastic friendly well trained staff and lots of them amazing villa, loads of space, fantastic views. Amazing service. Probably the most relaxing trip I've ever had. Recommended for couples

I have visited the Pimalai twice before and as a well-travelled individual, it remains my favourite hotel in the world. Myself and my husband were booked to stay this Christmas for our babymoon though for very exceptional circumstances we had to cancel. The Manager could not have been more accommodating in helping us resolve our personal situation and I simply cannot wait to return. It is rare to find such a hidden paradise in Thailand, or in fact worldwide, these days, particularly one with such a good Manager. Look no further and enjoy.

So Pimalai has always been one of my fave hotels ever since I fell in love with Koh Lanta, and finally I had the chance to stay here - and boy do I wish I was back there now! We had the 'most cost effective room' and I've got to say it was absolutely gorgeous! We were on the upper level and had a partial sea view. The room was stacked with amenities and plenty of bottled water. I unfortunately was very ill during my stay, and had the Nurse called out to me twice who in the end had to arrange for me to have a day stay at the hospital. The staff went out of their way to help you and always with a smile! The room service and Banyan Tree were excellent. Breakfast was varied and delicious! Unfortunately this is all I got to visit as I was in bed a lot of the time! I have seen past reviews complaining about the jetty....we arrived on a particularly rainy day with lots of waves, was the jetty moving yes - did it bother me? No it was fun - what's the worst that could happen you fall in to the sea and get wet? Staff take you bags so nothing valuable would get ruined! Would I stay here again - ABSOLUTELY! We are already planning on our next visit!!!! Thank you to everyone at the Pimalai - you were AMAZING

Pimalai was the best place that we stayed on our trip around Thailand. Very relaxing and quiet place if that is what you are looking for at the end of a trip. One of Thailand's Princesses (the current King's daughter) was staying there and it was apparently not her first visit which must be a good sign. The resort has 90 or so rooms but it is very spread out so it did not ever feel crowded other than maybe peak times at the spa and breakfast. We stayed down by the beach in a beach villa with its own pool and view over the beach to the sea which was amazing. Since we had our own pool I am not sure if the main pool chairs get snagged first thing in the morning but it kind of looked like that from the breakfast areas. The beach is beautiful but not clear blue water and white sand if that is what you are looking for. We ate at two of the hotel's restaurants and they were both great (Raktalay at beach level and Banyan Tree higher up). We did not eat at their fancier restaurant called Seven Seas since it has somewhat of a dress code. Same Same But Different is a great local restaurant right on the sand and right next to the resort. We had lunch there almost every day and dinner once. It is short walk to 7/11 if you want to buy beer or other items. The spa was also very nice but crowded in the reception and post treatment areas.
