Pimalai Resort & Spa in Ko Lanta, Thailand

Pimalai Resort & Spa is located on the southern tip of Koh Lanta, far from the north’s commercial buzz. Here the buzz comes from cicadas inhabiting dense tropical vegetation, where contemporary Thai-style rooms and villas nestle into the hillside. Rich orange, pink and lime green Thai fabrics complement dark teakwood flooring and rattan curtains, and throughout the property, pagodas and infinity pools conjure tranquility. At the base of the hills, a wide swath of white-sand beach leads to the Andaman Sea.

Lounge on a daybed on the shores of an azure bay and work up an appetite for lunch, a chicken salad sandwich with an Asian twist of pakchoy, lime and sweet chili dressing. Board a boat bound for Koh Lanta National Marine Park, whose rocky cliffs are home to mammoth monitor lizards and curious macaques. Hike in undisturbed wilderness. Return to the resort for a sundowner perched high above Ba Kantiang Bay.

I was planning my honeymoon and Thailand was our first choice of destinations, due to being in the same time zone and less than 10 hours flight from Perth. I spent days looking at various resorts(on Tripadvisor) around Thailand, and a friend recommended the Pimalai. As soon as I saw the website, I knew it was right up there with what I was looking for. As this was a honeymoon, I wanted a villa with an infinity pool overlooking the ocean. So Pimalai ticked that box perfectly. My main reason for then selecting the resort was basically due to the number of complimentary reviews on Tripadvisor. When I look at reviews I look for trends of the negative comments. Some people will always complain about something, so I don't waste my time on those reviews because they stand out. But its basically if there are complaints and they are about the same items then I take note. Pimalai had virtually no negative reviews and the ones that were there, were so minor it wasn't worth worrying about. I have travelled extensively, and stayed in 5-6 star hotels all over the world. Pimalai did not disappoint. We were met at the airport by one of their friendly staff, then driven in what looked liked a brand new private mini van in the most comfortable leather seats. Then onto a high speed private boat to the resort. When we arrived at the resort, we were taken straight to our villa, where we were met by one of the reception staff who basically checked us in. No lobby standing around and waiting. I felt like a VIP. The view from the villa was spectacular. You feel like your floating in the middle of the tropical rainforest overlooking the ocean with the most amazing sunsets. The villas are very big, they are not brand new, (the resort was built in 2004) but in great condition. There is a bit of a 70's feel to the bathrooms due to the tiles, which I really liked. I felt like I was in a James Bond movie that I remember watching as a kid. The staff are all so very friendly, and are always smiling. Just walking around the resort is so peaceful and relaxing. If you don't like tropical rainforests and all that it entails then don't stay here. The mosquitos are very friendly, but the resort has its own organic spray that they use to keep them to a minimum. It's a bit annoying, but you are in the tropics so you can't really complain. Those that do, need to get a firm grip on reality. The resort is built into the hillside and blends in beautifully. This also means that it's a bit steep in some places, so you they have transport that takes you to where ever you want to go in the resort. You are never waiting for longer than 5 mins. Again, if you don't like this then stay somewhere else. Your on a hill side, so suck it up. Walking is no issue either if you want the exercise. There are plenty of activities, such as the Spa, which is total paradise, Thai cooking classes (we did this and it loved it) and boat trips to dive or snorkel at some of the other islands (well worth it). They have four dining choices, all completely different menus and atmospheres. There is always something going on in the resort, and the daily newsletter is well worth the read, quite funny, but keeps you in the loop with whats happening so you can plan ahead. The the food was of a very high standard, and as you are staying in an exclusive 5star resort its not overly cheap, so I don't understand why people complain! 4000BHT is about what you will pay for two people, entree, main and a bottle of wine. Wine is expensive full stop in Thailand. 1800BHT for something decent. If you want to try other local options there are plenty of them within a 5 min walk along the beach. To the right, is Same Same But Different. Great beach side restaurant with really good food. Cheaper than the resort, but still high for Thailand. The village is at the end of the beach and has a lot of charm. Lots of food options and variation in prices, there is everything you need there, from a 7 Eleven, scooter hire, chemist, clothes etc. We did hire a scooter (the resort advises against this) and it was safe and fun if you don't ride like a muppet. We kept around 30-40kph as we were sightseeing. The cars give way and the traffic was light. The ride up to the main town centre takes around 30 mins was a great day out. Overall, as a place to completely relax and unwind, romantic, beautiful, and you want to feel special, then this place is for you. Cant wait to go back.

The resort is built on a relatively steep hill and sprawls down to the beach in the form of lodgings with different sizes and amenities inside a well maintained landscape. We stayed in a private villa that had a spectacular sea view and a very practical layout with a private infinity pool. The overall condition of the buildings calls for external repairs and the internal fittings are quite outdated, but certainly in good working condition. The resort restaurants have very standard menus and the food is nothing worth mentioning. On the overall, it is arguably one of the best resorts of Koh Lanta, which itself is in the process of developing and becoming popular as an alternative to the ever crowded Phuket island.

Wauw - what a perfect place to spend your holiday - we loved every hour of our stay at the Pimalai Resort. I you ask me to find something to put a finger on..... I can't. A fantastic service - the staff was so friendly, the hotel was in perfect shape, the rooms very nice and clean and the restaurants served delicious food. The ambiance was top-dollar. Will we come back for a second holiday there? Of corse we will and I am already looking forward to my next holiday at Pimal Resort :-)

I can't think of a single way the place could be improved. The service from the minute we got there was brilliant. The food, the views, the room, the beach, the pools, the activities, the calm atmosphere.....everything was brilliant, and made the whole trip. I know Thailand is known for the friendly people and smiling faces, but this place took it to a new level, and we were really sad to leave.

We stayed in room 123 for two weeks at the beginning of March and absolutely loved our stay. The staff are highly professional and super friendly, the restaurants offer a wide range of dishes, the beach and the two pools are superb and our room was cleaned twice a day. We had a relaxing time and would like to thank everyone at Pimalai for this. We highly recommend the hotel; it is worth the hour drive from Krabi airport plus the extra hour ride by boat to reach the hotel.
