Pimalai Resort & Spa in Ko Lanta, Thailand

Pimalai Resort & Spa is located on the southern tip of Koh Lanta, far from the north’s commercial buzz. Here the buzz comes from cicadas inhabiting dense tropical vegetation, where contemporary Thai-style rooms and villas nestle into the hillside. Rich orange, pink and lime green Thai fabrics complement dark teakwood flooring and rattan curtains, and throughout the property, pagodas and infinity pools conjure tranquility. At the base of the hills, a wide swath of white-sand beach leads to the Andaman Sea.

Lounge on a daybed on the shores of an azure bay and work up an appetite for lunch, a chicken salad sandwich with an Asian twist of pakchoy, lime and sweet chili dressing. Board a boat bound for Koh Lanta National Marine Park, whose rocky cliffs are home to mammoth monitor lizards and curious macaques. Hike in undisturbed wilderness. Return to the resort for a sundowner perched high above Ba Kantiang Bay.

We arrived at the Pimalai Jetty at around 9am and were treated to an exciting speedboat trip through the tall jutting rocks around the south and west side of Koh Lanta. The Pimalai crew were very helpful and informative, pointing out various landmarks. We were greeted by friendly and welcoming staff on the jetty at the Pimalai resort and were taken by golf buggy to reception. Initially, we had booked a Bayfront Deluxe room for the whole 10 days but I had seen photos of the private pool villa and decided to do 5 days in the Bayfront Deluxe and 5 in the private pool villa. We were given a cold drink and towel at reception and then told that the Bayfront Deluxe room we had booked was not available but we could, instead, have one of the beachfront rooms - no. 312. We were both very tired after 16 hours of traveling but soon woke up when we saw where we were staying - 10 yards from the beach in a lovely beachfront villa. The entrance area, bedroom and bathroom were absolutely perfect - all amenities you could possibly want were catered for, even worldwide compatible plug sockets. The only thing it was missing was a mosquito net which, when requested, was put up within the hour. If we had to make one minor negative point, the outdoor shower wasn't hot and essentially dispensed its water in the manner of a garden hose. So onto the beach with nice big beach towels and we find some comfy beach beds a few yards outside our 'garden'. The extremely affable and smiley Alif, among others, makes sure you're kept hydrated by bringing you iced water throughout the day and even leaves it for you if you're in having a dip. The beach is nice (not quite at the same level as, say, beaches in the Maldives) and the water was never really clear enough to see much past 12 feet in front of you when snorkeling but nice nonetheless - a bit rocky in places but otherwise all sandy. The sand is that uber fine stuff that ends up stuck to you all day - perhaps that's why the water isn't so clear. There is a backpacker-type place a few hundred meters along the beach called the 'Why Not Bar' which does cheap and cheerful (well, perhaps the service isn't always cheerful!) Thai dishes and cheap beer (think the sort of place that puts pictures of the food on the menu) - not a bad atmosphere at all at night with the odd bit of live music (listen out for one rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody that should bring a smile to your face) and a twice-nightly fire show that is quite impressive. At the opposite end of the beach is 'Same Same but Different' - a slightly nicer on-the-beach Thai restaurant with some typical thatched-style overhead offerings which are nice but stop you from seeing the stars. The food, though, was slightly inferior to Why Not Bar (which did the best Pad Thai we'd tried). We only ventured into two of the four or so restaurants at Pimalai, Rak Talay, which was effectively on the beach next to our villa and Spice n Rice, which doubles up as the breakfast area for guests below the road which separates the hillside rooms and villas from the beach accommodation. Rak Talay was a lovely spot to have both lunch and dinner and was operated by the most friendly staff you could hope for - our final bill had the words Rak Talay strewn all over it. There are smiley faces in abundance here from waiters/waitresses that seemed genuinely happy to help make your holiday as good as it can be. The Thai Green Curry here is to absolutely die for (and I've had my fair share) and my wife, who has been twice before to Thailand never daring to touch it, actually had it twice and loved it. The grilled salmon with Red Curry is also just as lip-smackingly delicious. A special mention to 'Fit' in this restaurant, our most frequent waiter who just made everything that much better and didn't ever flinch when I ordered something that wasn't Thai Green Curry and asked for a side bowl of Thai Green Curry just to dip the lovely bread in! I sure hope these guys get 100% of their tips because they really do deserve every single Baht. Rak Talay is also a lovely spot to sit on bean bags around the bar and watch the dramatic sunsets sprawling over the sea directly in front of the resort - two happy hours in the evening make it that much better... Spice n Rice has a slightly better and varied menu, we'd say, but, for us, the atmosphere is slightly more formal and not quite as relaxed as it is at the beach side. The food there is of similar quality, soft-shell crab was lovely. Overall, nice food in this resort, if a tad on the pricey side (for Thailand). Expect to pay around 1500-2000 Baht for dinner at this resort and, depending on what you have, around 1000-1500 for lunch. Spice n Rice transforms into the breakfast area for below-the-road guests and has a good selection including the usual fruits, cheeses, fried food and surprisingly tasty pastries (those cinnamon swirls though....) At day five, it was time to change over to the Pool villa - I have to say, we were a little reluctant to change, we loved the beach villa and the relaxed atmosphere down in that area was far more us than up on the hillside which felt quieter and, for some reason, a bit more formal. On day 4, I decided to go to the gym which is up on the hillside and have a sneaky peak at the pool villa we'd be moving to next. The walk (hike) up the hill is a workout in itself, some 100+ meters above sea-level and where our pool villa was (912), felt a little bit out of the way. When we changed over at 10am, we were instantly disappointed and that is no detriment to the pool villa at all, it is lovely if that's what you're looking for. The pool is around 1.25 meters deep, of ample size for a few mini-lengths and overlooks (from ours at least) the tops of trees for a good few hundred meters until you can just see the corner of the beach in the distance. It felt like we'd gone to a different resort, the villas seem slightly older than the villas down on the beach (possibly because of renovation due to the Tsunami?) and the rooms felt a little dark and dated. Not really sure why there was a living room area to be honest, especially as it had a kitchen with oven and microwave (where would you buy food to cook, we wondered). We instantly missed being able to people-watch from our decking and the closeness to the beach and restaurants/breakfast - 312 felt like the perfect spot. If you want quiet and to be away from everything and aren't planning to visit the beach much, it'll likely be perfect for you. We wanted to move back down closer to the beach so I took myself off to reception that lunchtime and spoke to Beatle (yep, as I'd guessed, she's named after the band!). 'Employee of the month' it said under her nameplate, so I thought I might be in luck here. She said there was nothing else available for the 5 nights and after a few disappointing thoughts, I suggested that we don't mind staying there one or two nights if something was available after that. She spoke to someone on the phone for enough time to make me think she was discussing last night's drinks with a friend and then came back and said if we stay in the pool villa that night, we could move back down to the beach area the following night for 4 nights. Perfect! One evening splashing about in our private pool (which turned out to be too cold anyway!) and we'd be back on the beach in no time. We were offered room 301 which had the identical layout to the beach villa, but was just behind it, up the slope by 20 meters or so. It all went smoothly, our bags were moved and I picked up the keys and there we were, not a coconut's lob from our previous dwelling and only a 20 second walk to breakfast - PERFECT and hat's off to either of John, Paul, George or Ringo for sorting it out for us. Everyone was so helpful and friendly. My wife forgot her Kindle charger and had 10 pages left on her book so I called up reception and lo-and-behold, someone turned up less than a minute later with a selection of charging cables - none of them fitted so she took it with her and said she'd find one for us - half and hour later we were informed it was being charged and we could pick it up when we were ready. We didn't try the pools - have to say they didn't really look like our kind of pools, but there were plenty of people there who liked them - we were all about the beach atmosphere. You can hire paddle boards and canoes for free there and there's a volleyball net and boules available too. I've stayed in numerous luxury hotels around the world and Pimalai's staff and service are as good as anything I've experienced before. Helpful, friendly and courteous - the resort itself is probably the low end of 5 star we'd have said, but they make it feel much better. We'd highly recommend a stay here, if you like the atmosphere of being near the beach and seeing the sea at night, stay below the hillside. Did I mention how good the Thai Green Curry was?

We stayed for 9 nights in the Pimalai Resort and enjoyed it very much! The staff is super friendly and definitely on a 5-star-level! The whole resort is in fantastic shape, the rooms are amazing, the pools very nice, all in excellent shape! The restaurants offer excellent food selection which we enjoyed daily! We really had one of the best holidays we ever had, and spending New Years Eve on the beach was something to remember for sure! If there is anything that was not excellent but only „good“ then the international cocktails like a Caipirinha... the local ones were perfect though!!! Thanks a lot for the service and the nicest time!

We had an absolutely amazing time during out stay at Pimalai. From the property to the staff to the service everything was exceptional. The private pool villa offers astounding view along with absolute privacy. Try to indulge in the spa situated in the midst of forest. Private beach of the property is quiet. The only substandard thing was the coffee at the breakfast. All in all if you need privacy in a serene atmosphere then this is the place to be.

We stayed at the Pimalai over the Xmas period last year and had the best time . The staff are so very friendly including the general manager who would personally come and chat with guests at breakfast . We had made a last minute decision to go to Ko Lanta and it was the best , being a family of 4 we had 2 hillside pool villas with breathtaking views . There are a number of restaurants and so could choose where to eat for lunch or dinner , didn’t venture out much out of the resort for meals as the food was great at the hotel . The Spa , also was nice , both myself and my husband had a couple of massages which were very good too . In fact the service was so great that a few days later when I got back to London and unpacked I realised I had left something behind , not only did they find it but also found someone to bring it back to London for me . We will definitely be back , you have everything in one resort , jungle , beach , spa and great food !!
