Words cannot describe how amazing our stay was at this resort. The staff was so accommodating and friendly, and made us feel at home. Our beachfront villa was breathtaking, and we loved every minute of it. I’m counting down the days until we return again. I can’t say enough great things about Kupu Kupu!!!

My partner and I had the luxury of spending 7 days at this wonderful resort and we have nothing but nice things to say! The resort is located on the beach about a 3 minute drive from the town of Thongsala. Kayaks are offered by the hotel at your dispositon for some day fun, and they have an amazingly warm and helpful staff. Management is on top of everything and extremely helpful. they assisted us in arranging multiple day activities that we may not have thought of doing ourselves. The spa is located at the center of the resort and the massages are incredible! So much so i fell asleep during one of mine and that is the first time i have ever fallen asleep during a massage! The restaurant has an amazing menu and the food is extremely well prepared. Whether you choose to participate in their planned buffet evenings or go "Ă  la carte" you will not be disappointed. The spacious bungalows with private mini pools make you feel like you are home on the island and the view from the restaurant and main pool are just perfect. If being treated well and having your every need met is a criteria for you, this is the place for you. Thank You again to everyone at Kupu Kupu.

If you want to stay near Thong Sala, Kupu Kupu is the best option if you're looking for higher-end accommodation. It's located about a 5m drive from the pier between the main road along the west coast and a very small private beach. The lobby and a few villas are located on the same level as the main road. The rest is on a lower (sea)level. Most of the villas are the same, some are scattered in a large U-shape around the pool and the others are located along the beach to the south. The ones to the south are more private as not many other guests venture that way but they're also further away from the restaurant and pool area so it's a matter of preference. There is one honeymoon suite which is located underneath the pool has an extended "private" terrace with plunge pool towards the beach. This is a really nice room but I wouldn't say it's very private. Most of the time guests are taking photos (and lots of selfies) by the edge of the main pool and hence looking directly down on the terrace. Also, there's still all the noise from the pool area. At night though it's pretty neat with direct and unobstructed view towards the sea and (possibly) sunset. During windy weather it must be quite loud though since the wind is coming directly onto the room. The beach is a mixed bag since it's affected by the tide. During mornings and until mid afternoon, some 100m is quite nice with not too coarse sand and quiet water. In the afternoon though, the area south of the pool is swamped so the sand there is less attractive. The pool is very picturesque and the scenery is one of the best I've seen in Asia. It's a bit narrow so when there are many people it's not possible to swim laps. Along the pool there are covered lounge areas and by the end of the pool there are beach decks with great views of the sea. One thing which needs improvement though is the availability of beach towels, later in the day there often weren't enough. The restaurant has awesome food, I highly recommend it whether you're staying at Kupu Kupu or just want to eat well. The quality of ingredients and the flavors are top notch. They really go out of their way to create great dining options in the restaurant with theme nights like jazz or BBQ. The breakfast selection is very good and has everything one could need although I would recommend adding another hot station for eggs since waiting time were an issue. The restaurant isn't very big and when a majority are showing up around 09.30 (service ends at 10.30 I believe) a lot of people want eggs at the same time. The ice coffee is apparently very good here. I would strongly encourage making the restaurant completely smoking free. At least on a couple of occasions I was sitting by one of the outer tables when other (clueless) guests began smoking. What is wrong with you people? Sp you want to poison yourselves, smell like crap and expose yourselves, so be it. Just don't expose anyone else to it especially during meals! The villas are really charming with beautiful dark wood floors and panels. There's a comfortable bed with mosquito net hanging down from the ceiling. Getting the whole bed covered takes a day to get used to, especially closing it tightly enough. Due to the construction of the villas, there are numerous crevasses where mosquitoes can enter the villa. There's a small couch, a desk and roman style bunk by the end of the bed with a couch style table. Hanging high above the windows is a TV which is view-able from the bed. The bathroom has double sinks made out of grey stone similar to the bathtub. There's a separate toilet and shower booth. The hotel provides toiletries and hairdryer. The mini bar is on the wall and the hotel provides complimentary water. One of the best features, which I haven't encountered before, is the late afternoon/early evening visit from the super friendly staff, providing complimentary water, tea and toiletries. The plunge pool on the terrace is great and if there are leaves in the water they'll come and clean it right away. I didn't try the spa, honestly because I felt the prices were a bit too high both compared with what I enjoyed on other 5* resorts and what you can get outside of the hotel in Thong Sala. It did look inviting though. One odd fact is that 95% of guests were Israeli, I don't know if that was purely coincidental or on par. Many of them were in groups and it caused more loudness than expected. The hotel works with a scooter rental company so you can rent a scooter for 250 per day, a must to get around unless you want to rely on the pickup taxis. I really enjoyed Kupu Kupu, I was let down by the fact that I had requested a room/villa with good view of the sea. We ended up with was a villa where the view from the balcony was obstructed around 40% by a big palm tree. It also caused shade most of the day which meant that there was no point in using our terrace and plunge pool.

As travel/lifestyle instagrammers, we really enjoyed the spacious suite. The room are clean and really spacious, this is for us really appreciated as we do have a lot of suitcases while traveling for our photo sessions. The rooms are decorated with wood in Thai style. The managing staff is nice and tried to fix all the issues we had with our room. Unfortunately, there were a bit too many issues within 3 days of stay. The main problem was a strong weird smell in the room. It took the staff 2 days to send someone to check, while we reminded every day. There were other minor problems like the group of cleaners waking us up at 6:30 in the morning, when they arrived to clean a bungalow next to us. And since the walls are really thin, we could hear every single noise of them talking loudly, laughing and sweeping the lanes around our house. The breakfast was average and mostly tasteless, also not so much choice and the staff was pushing you out closer to the end of breakfast (when they say the breakfast finishes at 10:30, they start cleaning the buffet 15 min before, this is annoying, and even 5 min after the breakfast is over, they should still serve you a coffee and not say it’s finish: this neither professional, nor polite). The location is good and close to Thong Sala Pier and to the night market. Some nice bars around to enjoy the sunset. We had a overall nice stay but the problems we had kinda spoiled it all but to apologize, they did offer us massages at the “L’Occitane Spa”.
