Kupu Kupu Phangan in Koh Phangan, Thailand

Borrowing its name from the phrase meaning "sand bar", the island of Ko Pha Ngan was once the favored retreat of Thai royalty. The smaller sister island to Koh Samui, Ko Pha Ngan is the ideal location for the isolated, romantic retreat of Kupu Kupu Phangan, Thailand's premier all-villa sanctuary on the sea. Opening December 1, 2012, Kupu Kupu Phangan takes the concept of an island holiday to new levels of comfort, style, and beauty. The hotel's 20 villas are uniquely designed to unite traditional Thai artistry with modern amenities and conveniences, culminating in an unforgettable vacation experience. Kupu Kupu Phangan's three categories of living accommodations includes: the charming wooden Seaview Pool Villa, the spacious Beachfront Pool Villa, and the tropically inspired Deluxe Beachfront Pool Villa. Each room is visually stunning with preferred amenities that help create a relaxed atmosphere, including a spa style bathroom, personal safe, satellite TV, and mini bar.

Despite its secluded, dreamy location, Kupu Kupu Phangan incorporates many exciting features of a five-star resort, like an on-site restaurant and spa. La Plague Restaurant serves up delicious regional cuisine, with bold flavors supplemented by fresh local seafood and ingredients indigenous to the land. The comfortable spa space is comprised of two double treatment rooms facing the hotel's infinity pool, perfect for a relaxing couple's massage, or any of the other therapies available on the spa's comprehensive menu of treatments. Guests may spend a day getting lost on the extensive stretches of beach surrounding the hotel, or take to the water for a fun-filled day at sea. No matter what your pleasure, Kupu Kupu Phangan has you covered. Come discover all the colorful nuances of a space aptly named for nature's most beautiful, exotic creature--the butterfly-- at Kupu Kupu Phangan.

Warm welcome! Superb villa, beautiful location but needs a good Director to ensure standards and service are kept to the 5 star placement and pricing. The villa inside was superbly decorated. The shower was either freezing or too hot, so hard to regulate. The first day I thought it was due to everyone taking a shower for breakfast but the temperature was never constant throughout the day. The towels were not that of a five star hotel, the bath towels were small, certainly not bath sheets that I am used to in 5 star hotels. The plunge pool was a super extra however one day it was so cloudy I could not see the bottom so I had to ring and ask for it to be cleaned. The door handle of the villa came off, we noted that it had only one screw holding it in place, it was fixed immediately but it should be checked regularly being a high end priced five star hotel. The beach towels were tired and full of snags. The breakfast was the worst I have ever been offered in a hotel of this standing. There was little choice of tropical fruit and each day I asked if there were mangoes, only to be looked at strangely and told no. It is mango season and they were all in the markets outside but not in the hotel. I did however mention this on our second to last day to Emma on reception and sure enough, our last day they put out 2 plates which I managed to get 4 pieces as everyone was wanting it. The watermelon and pineapple was always present in abundance so why not the mangoes? The rest of the breakfast was really not worth bothering with as the bacon was so hard it was like cardboard and cold. The dim sum was under cooked and the jams always had insects in the lid or in the jam itself. The omelettes were good if they got the order right, the last one, i had asked for was with vegetables in it, I found they had put cheese in it, luckily I am not lactose intolerant! The staff at breakfast seemed more bothered clearing vacated tables than meeting the customers needs that were still eating. I had asked for tea with a jug of milk, this was forgotten twice and my husband asked for an espresso twice only to be given a normal black coffee. The waitresses were unsmiling and quite honestly due to the poor standard of breakfast, it put us off eating dinner there. Such a shame, the hotel could be excellent but lacks the finishing touches. Would not recommend a visit here.

We have recently returned from a two week holiday in Thailand. I had been only briefly before and my girlfriend had never been to Thailand so we decided to visit a few places to see where we would like to go for longer if we ever came again - we found this place in Kupu Kupu!! From our seamless transfer from the ferry terminal (I phoned ahead aboard the ferry from Samui and the car was waiting for us at the terminal) to the incredible view at the reception check in - with the much needed ice towel - to the walk down to our beach front villa - I turned around to see the look on my girlfriends face as we turned the last beautiful corner as we walked to our beach front pool villa and it is one I will never forget - I’ve never seen a smile so wide and it was nice that I finally found something that made her speechless!! It was only a holiday but the room we had would have been fit for any honeymooning couple. It was right on the beach (the waves kept us awake (in a good way!) at night we were so close, the crystal waters you could almost touch and the very private (fortunately for my girlfriends sunbathing preferences!) private pool and decking area were sublime. The room was huge and we were welcomed with the obligatory towel swans and petals on the bed which I obviously said I had arranged (I hadn’t!), the daily complimentary gin, vodka and whisky decanters which were topped up as soon as they were empty which was a nice touch. The bed was incredibly comfortable and huge as well if you don’t like being clumped in the night! My girlfriend was very impressed with the L’Occitane shower and bath products and we have enough to keep us going for a good few months now!! The ONE negative about the room is the safe was the hardest to use and very old compared to how easy they were at the other hotels we stayed at! Oh and also, there is no soundproofing so as relaxing as waves and rain can sound, when you couple those two things with the tropical bird noises at 4am - it’s a pretty early wake up call most days. But...when you throw open the curtains to the incredible view you can’t feel too hard done by... The rest of the hotel was immaculate. The food at breakfast was fantastic (Thailand in general need to up their game on the bacon front but that’s all!) we also had the Thai tasting menu one night which was incredible and we couldn’t finish it there was so much! Had a decent happy hour every day from 4-6 and the staff were the best we encountered our whole holiday. Aung was especially charming and very attentive, as was the brilliant cocktail bar man whose name escapes me unfortunately but who patched me up when I stupidly slipped on some rocks in the sea and cut myself on various limbs! The ONLY downside was that it decided to rain non-stop for a day and a half which spoiled our last two remaining “sunbathing days” but, if the weather is the only complaint about your stay at a hotel then the hotel is doing pretty good. Definitely a “couples” hotel, definitely a romantic hotel, definitely the best view from a hotel room I have ever seen and definitely a hotel we will return to! Thank you Kupu Kupu!

One of the best hotel I experienced in my life. The scenery is stunning and the Villa with private pool is spacious with a nice Balinese decoration. I chose a Villa with Sea View and I was also close to the main pool. The service was great with a special mention for housekeeping, the room was always very clean! Breakfast was international and with enough choice for adults & kids. We were lucky enough to experience the Spa l'Occitane and the massage was amazing! Can not recomment more this little paradise.

We stayed there for our holidays and we had a great time ! We booked a villa right on the beach (v.46) with private pool and I believe that it’s one of the best category ! Breakfast is good with lot of choices also the restaurant! Price is a little bit higher but you get what you paid for..nice presentation, good quality and very tasty. Hotel is about 5 min from the center Thong Sala and the best way to go around is to rent a motorbike. Staff is very friendly and helpful. You can contact reception to rent motorbike, book tour/restaurants, they are willing to help you for any inquiries. Of course the hotel doesn’t look like a brand new one because the villas are made of wood but I feel that they do their best to make it charming and nice. Overall it was a very good experience and I would go back there for sure. Thanks again to all the team of Kupu Kupu who made our holidays unforgettable.

We stayed here because it was the most affordable place to stay during the Full Moon Party. The driver picked us up from the pier and as soon as we arrived, we were greeted with a refreshing glass of juice with an ice-cold towel to cool our necks as it was a hot and humid day. Our room wasn't ready so we waited at my friend and her husband's room. They booked the deluxe beachfront pool villa and when we walked in, I punched myself for not booking the same room. They were at villa 12 and it was the second to last villa to the beach, which in my opinion was the best as you could have a full view of the beach. We ordered room service which was pretty expensive (expensive as in thai expensive since it's normal prices back in the US/UK). The food was okay considering the price range. We needed to go to 7Eleven to pick up some beers and refreshments so we asked the hotel staff and they took us with no charge! We spent the rest of the afternoon lounging in the pool and beach area until our room was ready. My husband and I stayed at the Sea View Suite, villa 1. I mean, compared to the beachfront pool villa there was no comparison. However, room was clean and really big. Our balcony overlooked right in front of the pool so view was pretty damn amazing. The sunset....BREATHTAKING!! I've been to Thailand twice and nothing beats the sunset like Koh Phangan. Being able to take in the vastness of the sky at my balcony just made this resort heavenly. They did a pregaming party before the Full Moon Party until 7PM. It was 850 baht for a bucket, accessory, and glow in the dark makeup. We didn't take that offer as we took a nap and had already bought booze to pregame. Trip to the Full Moon Party took about 30 minutes. Breakfast was delicious! Service is superb! This was by far our favorite resort of our trip in Thailand. My girlfriend and I still talk about how sick this resort is!
