Kupu Kupu Phangan in Koh Phangan, Thailand

Borrowing its name from the phrase meaning "sand bar", the island of Ko Pha Ngan was once the favored retreat of Thai royalty. The smaller sister island to Koh Samui, Ko Pha Ngan is the ideal location for the isolated, romantic retreat of Kupu Kupu Phangan, Thailand's premier all-villa sanctuary on the sea. Opening December 1, 2012, Kupu Kupu Phangan takes the concept of an island holiday to new levels of comfort, style, and beauty. The hotel's 20 villas are uniquely designed to unite traditional Thai artistry with modern amenities and conveniences, culminating in an unforgettable vacation experience. Kupu Kupu Phangan's three categories of living accommodations includes: the charming wooden Seaview Pool Villa, the spacious Beachfront Pool Villa, and the tropically inspired Deluxe Beachfront Pool Villa. Each room is visually stunning with preferred amenities that help create a relaxed atmosphere, including a spa style bathroom, personal safe, satellite TV, and mini bar.

Despite its secluded, dreamy location, Kupu Kupu Phangan incorporates many exciting features of a five-star resort, like an on-site restaurant and spa. La Plague Restaurant serves up delicious regional cuisine, with bold flavors supplemented by fresh local seafood and ingredients indigenous to the land. The comfortable spa space is comprised of two double treatment rooms facing the hotel's infinity pool, perfect for a relaxing couple's massage, or any of the other therapies available on the spa's comprehensive menu of treatments. Guests may spend a day getting lost on the extensive stretches of beach surrounding the hotel, or take to the water for a fun-filled day at sea. No matter what your pleasure, Kupu Kupu Phangan has you covered. We had a wonderful time staying at Kupu Kupu for 3 nights as part of our honeymoon in Thailand. We stayed in the Deluxe Beachfront Pool Villa and the room was at a discounted price that included a 3 course dinner one evening and 1-hour couples' massage. Highlights: - AMAZING sunset. We watched it from our private pool on the beach and the colors were incredible and the reflections off of our pool made it even more enchanting. We even GoPro-ed it one night then watched it in fast-forward, it was incredible. - The main resort pool is very nice and many guests were enjoying the lounge chairs as well as the bar which made delicious drinks. - The food was very good. Breakfast was included and they have tons of options! We ate dinner there every night as well and enjoyed the curry dishes. We also had a 3 course meal included for one night during our stay which was excellent. The restaurant overlooks the gorgeous pool and beach. There was also a live band each night and the lady who sang would go around serenading couples. - The service is incredible. Everyone was very friendly and efficient. Our pool light went out and they sent someone out to fix it within a few minutes. We loved the turn down service each night, it really set the mood for the evening when we would return from dinner. - We rented a scooter which the hotel helped us set up (TIP: take pictures before so if they try to say you scuffed it or dented it you have evidence it already existed) and this was great for exploring other snorkeling destinations and each lunch off the property. - We had a couples massage included with our package and it was my husband's first time getting a massage. We both had a great time. - The room is spacious and gorgeous. The whole hotel is well appointed and the gardens are beautiful to walk through. Drawbacks: - The sun sets on this end of the island, so our deck was hot and the water bucket to rinse sand off of our feet was also hot. We wore sandals which was an easy adjustment, but not sure how you would solve the water problem unless perhaps you placed it in the shade somewhere? - No one swam at the beach. It was beautiful and very romantic to stroll along, but just odd that no one was in the water so we decided not to go in as well because we saw some seaweed and figured that is why. Overall this was an amazing resort to spend our honeymoon and we enjoyed it very much! We would absolutely stay here again and we would recommend it to anyone looking for a romantic getaway!

Koh Phangan was the last Island we visited during our month trip to Thailand so we wanted to make sure we stayed at a place we felt relaxed and we can definitely say Kupu Kupu far exceeded our expectations. Upon arriving we were greeted by their kind and helpful employees. It was easy to communicate with all of the employees and staff. We were walked to our Beach Front Pool Villa and when we got to the villa we were in complete awe. It was absolutely gorgeous. The villa itself was immaculate and in great condition. Everything looked new and well taken care of. The outside patio and pool area was also beautiful and the best part was that we were less than 20ft away from the beach. Room service was extraordinary. They'd come and make up our room in the morning and also did a wonderful turndown service in the evenings. Our pool was cleaned daily as well which we got to enjoy every single day. The little villas have a good amount of privacy which is lovely!! The food at the restaurant is incredible and you basically get what you pay for. Although there are cheaper eats around the town especially at the night food market near the pier, you at least want to eat at the hotel's restaurant a few times as the food was delicious!! We highly recommend Kupu Kupo and we're really looking forward to coming back to Thailand. So when we do, hopefully we can stay there again!!

You get a sense of luxury with the Pool Villas and a sunset view. But the staff clearly tries to do a little too much. It's somehow missing the natural Thai sense of smile. Maybe relax a little bit. At that price you would expect a little more attention to details in the rooms where maintenance has a few things to fix. Strangely there is a dinner table waiting in the middle of the pool for some show off guest to book an over expensive meal with their feet in the water... clearly someone is trying too hard. Works in an adjacent room with power tools in the middle of the afternoon and another afternoon spend spraying mosquito repellent everywhere - including the guests ! - with a noisy petrol compressor were kinda disappointing. The place gets away with it here because it's Koh Phangan and the spot is just about perfect.

Kupu Kupu is a great hotel to stay in Koh Phangan. Great value. For a reasonable price you get your own villa with a private pool. The location can't be better. 7 minute drive from the ferry and the island center. The villas are build in traditional Thai style. The furniture is quality made. The mattress and pillows are very comfortable. The toilet, sinks and shower appliances are of high quality. The bathroom area is huge. So is the shower. There are 2 AC units which are enough for the villa's size. Great mini bar selection. It's very quite here. You will get great quality sleep. The hotel itself is not very big. Regardless which villa you stay in, you can walk to the pool, beach, reception, restaurant within a few minutes. The beach is nice, clean but small. It's narrow and short. Very few people. Relatively clean water. Perhaps other parts of Koh Phangan have better beaches. The service was excellent. Any concern was addressed immediately and professionally. The fist day we received a phone call from reception asking if everything was up to our expectations which speaks highly of the hotel's attention to its customers needs. The restaurant is top notch. The breakfast was delicious offering wide variety. We had dinner there once. The food was great. Pricey but it's a fancy restaurant. You get what you pay for. The reason I did not rate 5 stars is the lack of beach beds which was a minus for us. In my opinion its a minor investment which would make a big difference for hotel's guests. Also one of the AC units did not work well. We did not complaint as it was not that hot during our stay. Perhaps it could be a problem in April and later on. All in all I would highly recommend Kupu Kupu to stay in if you plan to travel to Koh Phangan. This place is especially well suited for couples. The atmosphere is very romantic. Most definitely would stay here again.

The restaurant and the service provided are top notch. The waiters speak good English and engage in converation with their guests which is lovely. The food is excellent, the views are breathtaking. This should definitely be on your list if you visit Ko Pha Ngan.
