Kupu Kupu Phangan in Koh Phangan, Thailand

Borrowing its name from the phrase meaning "sand bar", the island of Ko Pha Ngan was once the favored retreat of Thai royalty. The smaller sister island to Koh Samui, Ko Pha Ngan is the ideal location for the isolated, romantic retreat of Kupu Kupu Phangan, Thailand's premier all-villa sanctuary on the sea. Opening December 1, 2012, Kupu Kupu Phangan takes the concept of an island holiday to new levels of comfort, style, and beauty. The hotel's 20 villas are uniquely designed to unite traditional Thai artistry with modern amenities and conveniences, culminating in an unforgettable vacation experience. Kupu Kupu Phangan's three categories of living accommodations includes: the charming wooden Seaview Pool Villa, the spacious Beachfront Pool Villa, and the tropically inspired Deluxe Beachfront Pool Villa. Each room is visually stunning with preferred amenities that help create a relaxed atmosphere, including a spa style bathroom, personal safe, satellite TV, and mini bar.

Despite its secluded, dreamy location, Kupu Kupu Phangan incorporates many exciting features of a five-star resort, like an on-site restaurant and spa. La Plague Restaurant serves up delicious regional cuisine, with bold flavors supplemented by fresh local seafood and ingredients indigenous to the land. The comfortable spa space is comprised of two double treatment rooms facing the hotel's infinity pool, perfect for a relaxing couple's massage, or any of the other therapies available on the spa's comprehensive menu of treatments. Guests may spend a day getting lost on the extensive stretches of beach surrounding the hotel, or take to the water for a fun-filled day at sea. No matter what your pleasure, Kupu Kupu Phangan has you covered. Come discover all the colorful nuances of a space aptly named for nature's most beautiful, exotic creature--the butterfly-- at Kupu Kupu Phangan.

We spent here 7 nights in march, with "Long Stay Package". It contains a lots of extras(healthy drinks, 2 lunch, 2 massage,etc...). At arrive, first in our life, we have got an upgrade, from sunset pool villa to a deluxe beachfront pool villa (Villa No.45)!! It was like in dreams. The ocean is in the end of the pool, with crystalclear water and white sand. Be aware: in march, you are able to swim only in the morning, until 11-12AM, after than, the water will be very shallow. The villa itself is very huge, with bathtube and separate shower(with good pressure), sitting area, and very well equipped (+coffe machine, spirits), and clean. The breakfast is perfect, with big variety of cold and warm dishes, fresh juices, fruits. The resort have an own restaurant, its also good. The main pool is good, but we didnt used that, beacuse of our own pool and mainly of the amazing ocean. Another amazing thing is the garden, with countless flowers, trees and tropical plants. The resort itself is 5-7 min by scooter from Thong sala Pier and the market or shops. Rent scooter from the hotel, its cheap(250baht) and is in relative good condition. Dont go by foot, its too far from pier, and very dangerous The staff is friendly, and looks every wish of you. Special thank to "Bat",the waiter..! Very good resort, in a beautiful enviroment. We really enjoyed our stay.

Good points; 1. Stunning location, and amazing view from our Beach View Pool Villa. Beach stretches round very far, and has very long shallow shelf, you can walk out miles into the clear sea. Free sea canoe to use. Sunsets are spectacular. 2. Staff helpful and very efficient, organised excellent 1000 TBH pp transfer to Koh Samui airport, ferry ticket and drivers at both ends. Well worth it. 3. Daytime restaurant and bar food is good and reasonably priced. Free bottled water in room. Less good; ('first world problems' based on their 5 star positioning and price) 1. Resort is tired and in need of updating. Public areas frayed at the edges. Rooms themselves need to refresh - showers / toilets adequate but low spec and showing their age. Room air con also old, struggled with the vaulted ceiling. Much snagging in the rooms. 2. Breakfast should be a delight in a 5 star resort but it’s a shocker here. 'Hot' section is sub-Travel Lodge. The ‘egg station’ chef alas not a chef. The terrible music blaring in the background (dodgy house music, or Adele covers) cheapens the whole resort. 3. Gym undergoing refurb meaning shuttle taxi to local gym in town. Fascinating working out watching Muay Thai sparring, but too much hassle to use as often as you might like. 4. Paid ‘Romantic Set Up’ for arrival thinking it would be a bit of fun. ‘Chocolates, Sparkling Wine, Flowers and Massage Oil’. Tiny box of ferrero rocher, sparkling ‘apple wine’ (AKA, cider) which to be fair they did exchange. Felt like a real waste of money. Plus the room on arrival has enough wow factor to not need this. 6. Wifi doesn't really work, apparently as issue with Apple products. Overall - this is not a 5 star resort in it's current shape. Looking back, I probably took too much from the L'Occitane association when booking. Basically they use L'Occitane products in their tiny spa. We had a great 3 nights here in due to the beach location, but if this had been our only hotel on KP I would've moved.
