W Koh Samui

My husband and I recently spent a week at W Koh Samui. As a Titanium Marriott Bonvoy member, I had high expectations for our stay. Although I wasn’t offered a complimentary upgrade and had to pay for one, in the end I’m glad we didn’t get upgraded to a beach villa — most of them surprisingly don’t have a clear view of the beach or the sea, which would have been disappointing. Instead, our villa (the villa that I paid for the upgrade) was located at the top of the hill with a beautiful sea view from the infinity pool, which we truly enjoyed every day. There was one minor issue staying in villas on the top of the hill, the hotel offer sweet spots but to get to one from our villa we had to go down the hill and up the hill to go back to the villa. Breakfast was exceptional — easily one of the best parts of our stay. The selection was impressive, with fresh coconut water, a variety of fresh juices, and made-to-order Indian dishes like dosa, plus a noodle bar that was absolutely delicious. We also really enjoyed the fire show the resort hosts in the evenings. Although it was cancelled for the first three nights of our stay due to weather conditions, we were lucky to catch it twice later in the week. On one of those nights, Ball — who works at the beach and also performs in fire shows at other hotels and restaurants — kindly arranged a special performance just for us, with the team performing very close to our seats. It was truly amazing and one of the most memorable moments of our trip. Speaking of Ball, he deserves special mention. He looked after us every day at the beach and was always warm, welcoming, and incredibly attentive — constantly offering cold water, freshly made juices, or coconut water without us even asking. On our last day, he even surprised us with a lovely gift, which made us feel truly appreciated and cared for. Unfortunately, one major downside of the resort was the mosquito problem. They were present throughout the property, and despite taking precautions, both my husband and I got bitten — especially at night and in certain places. On our final day, I requested a late checkout, which was granted, but we were asked to move rooms at noon. The new villa, with a jungle view, turned out to be full of mosquitos. We returned from the beach just to shower and change before our departure, but in the short 30 minutes we were inside, I ended up with multiple mosquito bites on my legs — it was very uncomfortable and left a disappointing final impression. Another incident with bugs was at breakfast when we saw a cockroach under our table, I think was dead, but we called a manager and he removed it. Overall, W Koh Samui offers some incredible experiences — particularly the beach service, breakfast, and evening entertainment. However, the mosquito issue and how the late checkout was handled took away from what could have been a near-perfect luxury stay. With better pest control and more attention to detail on guest comfort, this could easily be a five-star experience.
