Booked a long weekend vacation in W Koh Samui, (to spend my birthday), with high expectations, based on previous experiences at other W properties, eg. W Bali. In many ways, there is indeed a "Wow" factor,... on first impressions. The resort is built into a steep hillside, with a large number of the private villas on the slope, and the others at beach level. Some of these villas have a view of the sea, in the distance, and over the roofs of other villas, while some are "jungle" villas, with no view and surrounded by a lot of trees and bushes. We stayed in a jungle villa on the first night, and found that there were a lot of insects (including mosquitoes) on the outside deck, lizards and one cockroach. The private pool was also in the shade (no direct sunlight), and the water was rather too cold to swim comfortably. As such, we couldn't spend much time in this outdoor area. The villa itself, however, merited a "Wow" - large, spacious, high ceiling, interesting colours, decor and atmosphere; And there was a lovely large bathroom, with large bathtub, outdoor rain-shower area with a tree (!), and another indoor shower room - very very nice ! Plus - there was a high-end Illy Coffee machine and bar filled with interesting drinks and snacks, - which made mornings and evenings a real pleasure ! We moved to another villa the next day - "Ocean-view" - which was slightly smaller than the jungle villa, but at least had a spacious view of the distant sea, without the heavy trees and foliage - and less insects too ! However, this Ocean-view meant that the villa was even higher up the hillside - which made it rather strenuous to move around the hotel grounds. For example, to go for breakfast, we had to walk down a slope (equivalent of 5 -6 flights of stairs, or about 45 degrees incline), then up another steep slope to the main building reception area, then down another 2 flight of stairs to get to the restaurant ! This is the same to get to the Spa, to the beach, to the pool, etc etc. Of course, there is a buggy service, but there is waiting time for this, especially at night, and when it was raining.. So on the 2nd day, we decided to spend more time in our villa - unfortunately for us, the outdoor deck and pool area also did not receive much direct sunlight after 11am, and the pool was still rather too cold to be comfortable. We headed to the beach area, which was small and nice, but dominated by a prominent "W" sign; - there was a constant stream of hotel guests taking pictures with the sign ! The beach quality was disappointing - water had ? jellyfish (we had some stings) and quite a bit of sharp coral on the sea floor. We next decided to go to the Spa - again, very nice first impressions; Again, we had to walk up more stairs to the waiting area, then up to the Sauna area, then up and down to the treatment rooms. Therapists were pleasant, but not very experienced. But it was a nice 2-hour session. The main pool, about 30m long, was much better than the villa pools - warmer water, with view of the bay. Very nice to swim and hang out on the poolside loungers. And with a small dining area in the corner, where we had beer and lunch. Food and drinks in all the restaurants were high quality; from breakfast at Kitchen Table, to dinner at Nomu Japanese restaurant (where the staff recognised my birthday with a small Yuzu cheesecake !) Compliments must be made to all the hotel staff; each and everyone whom we encountered - they were warm and engaging, and well-trained, especially the front entrance staff who arranged our outing to Chaweng Beach area in the evening. Overall, we had a good weekend vacation, (with a lot of walking exercise !) and we returned home with good feelings about W Koh Samui !

Just returned from a wonderful 5 night stay. Yes, the view from the Woo bar is breathtaking and that good, and yes it is probably more suited to adults only than families. The villas are luxurious and well equipped, the meals could not be faulted and the service is exceptional - whatever, whenever. Close enough to Bophut and Chaweng but far enough to laze away on the private beach without being disturbed by any locals. Complementary return shuttle to Chaweng with a drop off only at Fishermans Market. It would have been nice to be picked up from there as well as the shuttle passes that way on the return from Chaweng but we were told it was not possible even though the shuttle next door does that (whatever, whenever?). The spa treatments were good but the wife tells me that we didn't get the post treatment service such as herbal tea etc in the waiting area, that other spas tend to have, on both occasions we had a massage. She rates the "Let's Relax Spa" cheaper experience better than at the W (but what would I know?). There are buggies to ferry you around the resort but there are still a lot of stairs in between drop off points so I don't know how the elderly or infirm would cope with getting to and from places like the Kitchen Table where breakfast is served - although from the way Sai at the Kitchen Table warmly greets guests by name each morning for breakfast and makes them feel special, I am sure she would carry these people up and down the stairs if need be!

WOW

Wow is really the only way to sum up the W at Koh Samui - from their amazing villa retreats, to the location in Koh Samui, to the level of service and politeness of staff, and their willingness to assist wherever possible. This was the first time we've stayed at a hotel of this calibre, and it's completely set the bar. If you can afford it, it's well worth the money.

We went there to have lunch at one of their restaurants- The Kitchen Table. The view as you enter the property is amazing. You would just fall in love with that view. We clicked beautiful pictures at the Woo Bar and then went to the beach area of the Hotel. This property has beach on two side. Hence, we enjoyed the view by the Namu restaurant as well.
