This is where the iron man race starts and I found out once I got there and saw the road closure signs. The place is absolutely amazing, with a shopping/restaurant area with a grocery store and many amazing facilities scattered throughout the resort. They have one of the best spas I have been to. The overall stay is great and you don’t need to leave the resort for anything mostly. However it is quite a drive to Kona. There is a private beach and they do have a couple reefs not far from the beach. The reef super close to the hotel is a bit bleached but if you swim a bit further you can see many colonies of fish. The beach is a bit rocky so highly recommend you get water shoes to walk towards the water deep enough for swimming. Snorkeling is great when there is no wind. The beach also has a rental place for kayaks, paddle boards, and snorkeling gear. The area is famous for being windy and the the second half of the week we stayed here it got super windy. Then it was not a good weather for swimming or even chilling on the beach. Of course things are not cheap in the resort, but I think they make sure your splurge is worthwhile.

We spent one night recently at Mauna Lani Bay in an oceanfront room with the usual gorgeous view. This was our fifth stay at this iconic Kohala coast hotel. This time we were checking into a condo the next day next door at Mauna Lani Terrace. The room was fresh with new fabrics and finishes, but the rooms still feel very dark and the bathrooms are still very 1980s. Witth the new ownership, one hopes the renovations will be good ones. Staff is overall very warm and helpful, especially at the Terrace Restaurant for breakfast and at the still lovely Canoe House. There seem to be fewer employees around the pool at the beach grill and bar. Two nights ago, a beach grill server proceeded to aggressively throw out the ice and leftover fruit drink liquids onto the lawn and the stone paved adjoining area. It was noisy for patrons still seated and looked unsanitary and sticky. This went on for 10 minutes as she was getting ready to shut down bar service at sunset. Server was fairly unfriendly, seeming anxious to shut down. It seems some staff need some better training. Lobby bar design could be anywhere, and fails to attract patrons due to the cold at,osphere. There’s no indoor/outdoor evening cocktail area currently that capitalizes on the beautiful tropical grounds. There is only one option open for lunch at the hotel. Spa services at the Mauna Lani Spa are now closed. Had to book at the Fairmont Orchid. Beach lounge chairs are sort of shabby looking this year. We’re hopeful that they will be replaced in the renovations. Pool area at night is left messy with patron towels from the day’s use. This is a beautiful oceanfront property that needs new love and attention. The historic Hawai’ian fish ponds are treasures, and I hope the new plans include soft and shielded downlighting in the gardens at night.

The service, the beach ( nice soft white sand), the snorkeling, the food.... mmm breakfast with beach views. Absolutely everything was perfect. Be careful of the birds stealing your food, you’ll think it’s cute at first, and then it’s not. Haha. We biked around the beach, enjoyed lunch at the golf course, fed koi in the mornings, watched the sun set in the evening from our room, and watched the baby hammerhead sharks swim around in a water nursery. I love luxury, nature, and I love feeling off the grid. This place was perfect in that tone that they strive to protect the environment, it’s surrounding, and the wildlife. We stayed at multiple locations around the island to get the full experience, and hands down without a doubt, this place was the best. We still talk about when we can visit again. Thank you for an amazing experience! See you guys again soon!

This a beautiful property with an accommodating, but not intrusive staff. We loved the entryway with the running waters filled with tropical fish. Our room on the 5 th floor had an ocean view... the small balcony lanai was a great place to relax in the morning and after sunset...

Fabulous Oceanfront rooms with views of breaching whales, beaches, and stunning sunsets! We were on the 4th floor south face. Big clean room with a nice couch and great 2 sink bathroom. The staff was wonderful from the beginning of our stay until the end! The balcony is big and has comfortable chairs, table for dining, and a lounge chair. We travel a lot and have stayed at several properties on the Big Island. We were pleasantly surprised by the stress free check in and the staff’s willingness to help with the small details to make our stay perfect! We will be back!
