Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa in La Jolla, California

Located in the charming community of La Jolla, just minutes from Torrey Pines Golf Course and 14 miles north of San Diego, Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa is a stylish retreat reminiscent of an early California ranch estate. The property - listed on Condé Nast Traveler's coveted Gold List and Hot List - pays homage to its rich history by emulating and utilizing materials from the original 1880s equestrian compound. The business center resembles the original caretaker's cottage, the intimate hotel lobby was created from the old farmhouse, and Mustangs & Burros, the hotel's rustic rancho-style bar, was inspired by the tack room. Even the restaurants reflect the old spirit in their design, menu concepts and gracious service.

This coastal hideaway is set on nearly ten tree-laden acres coupled with fragrant ground coverings such as rosemary and sage. The hotel houses a collection of freestanding Spanish buildings coupled with hidden courtyards and trailing pathways. Equestrian-style doors and sky-lit windows add a light and airy feeling to the plush guest rooms. Slip into the fitness room for an early morning workout, spend the afternoon draped across a massage table or do a little celebrating sideways at the hotel's very own wine bar. Dips in the cabana-flanked pool prove to be refreshing day or night. Venture off property to discover the pounding surf, verdant fairways, hidden hiking trails and protected wetlands. If you are more partial to Prada than park lands, head to the enchanting village area to prowl the designer shops and eateries.

My fiancee and I stayed at the Estancia for a wedding in July 2017. The property is beautiful, and the grounds create an atmosphere of quiet luxury. Yet we felt the resort was massively overpriced, especially considering the incompetent service. When we went to check in, there was a 15-20 minute wait at the front desk. Even though we arrived at 2, our room was not ready for another two hours. At check out, we experienced an even greater hassle when the hotel tried to bill me twice for the reservation (I paid with points on my credit card, but the Estancia somehow lost a record of the transaction and demanded that I pay a second time with a credit card). The front desk staff was nice, but not terribly competent. The issue was resolved, but not before 25 minutes of paperwork. For a budget hotel, such delays and mistakes may be expected. But the lines at the front desk and the hassle of charging me twice was not acceptable for a $500-a-night hotel. The rooms were clean but not spectacular. The hotel itself is in need of a renovation. Overall, we thought the resort was nice, but substantially overpriced for the poor service and the average nature of the experience. The location is not that convenient, and you will not get an ocean view. Ultimately, there are much better hotels in San Diego/La Jolla for the price of the Estancia.

We loved Estancia! We were greeted with a welcoming staff and complimentary chips and 2 beers. The hotel sent a congratulations card as well which was equally appreciated! The location was perfect to get up La Jolla shores area and the hotel shuttle will gladly drop off a d pickup within a 5 mile radius. The restaurant Mustangs & Burros was not good and not worth going and the same for the Adobe restaurant. There are so many food options outside of the hotel to try! Cabana or Day bed rentals at the pool are worth it. We would definitely come back again. Stellar team members: Brent, Stephanie, Richy, Norma, Arienza (sp?).

There were nine of us (six adults and three children)and we all enjoyed different activities. The grounds were beautiful and everything was very convenient. The staff and the amenities were all top notch. It was a memorable experience.

This was a great choice for a week get away as a couple. Beautiful, quieter resort where the service is top notch. The valets and Conceirge were always full of great recommendations and they have a shuttle that takes you to town and beaches that runs all day to 10:30 pm. Rooms are very nice and comfortable. We heard restaurants were good but we opted to explore area venues. Highly recommend. It was a very calm environment that was always welcoming after a day in town or out doing activities in crowds.
