Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa in La Jolla, California

Located in the charming community of La Jolla, just minutes from Torrey Pines Golf Course and 14 miles north of San Diego, Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa is a stylish retreat reminiscent of an early California ranch estate. The property - listed on Condé Nast Traveler's coveted Gold List and Hot List - pays homage to its rich history by emulating and utilizing materials from the original 1880s equestrian compound. The business center resembles the original caretaker's cottage, the intimate hotel lobby was created from the old farmhouse, and Mustangs & Burros, the hotel's rustic rancho-style bar, was inspired by the tack room. Even the restaurants reflect the old spirit in their design, menu concepts and gracious service.

This coastal hideaway is set on nearly ten tree-laden acres coupled with fragrant ground coverings such as rosemary and sage. The hotel houses a collection of freestanding Spanish buildings coupled with hidden courtyards and trailing pathways. Equestrian-style doors and sky-lit windows add a light and airy feeling to the plush guest rooms. Slip into the fitness room for an early morning workout, spend the afternoon draped across a massage table or do a little celebrating sideways at the hotel's very own wine bar. Dips in the cabana-flanked pool prove to be refreshing day or night. Venture off property to discover the pounding surf, verdant fairways, hidden hiking trails and protected wetlands. If you are more partial to Prada than park lands, head to the enchanting village area to prowl the designer shops and eateries.

Stayed here recently as part of a road trip in California. The location itself is luxurious, but in keeping with a previous experience at Meritage resorts, it was soon apparent that there are additional costs to consider. There is a nightly resort fee of $25 to be paid (which includes a "complimentary" bottle of wine) and a fee for parking of $25 per night, so that there is an additional nightly charge of $50-00-it soon mounts up! I was also amazed and frustrated by that fact that complimentary coffee is served every morning in the hotel lobby, but that this finishes at 06-30-this seems like a token gesture at best and ensuring the most vacationing guests do not get to take advantage of this. In a similar way, it was not possible to use the poolside cabanas without speaking to reception first-again this incurred an additional charge. I was also disappointed by the food at the restaurant (Mustangs & Burros) which was of average quality at best. Indeed, food had to be sent back to the kitchen as it was at best luke warm. To sum up, we did not feel particularly welcome and felt more like money-making commodities than guests. I will not be financially supporting this hotel chain again.

This is a large hotel that meets all the standards of amenities and cleanliness with large well appointed rooms. However, when we checked in we were informed of an additional $25 a day resort fee and $25 a day parking fee. A car is necessary as there is nothing except corporate offices within walking distance. The front desk boasts a shuttle service within a five mile radius but you have to book days ahead of time. The hotel layout is crazy. You can't get anywhere by walking outside, one must navigate the maze of hallways to get to pool, lobby, restaurant, etc. With everyone walking by and doors opening and closing it is not a peaceful place. The map shows a close proximity to the ocean but there is no way to walk there from the hotel. The first days of the trip we stayed at the Pantai Inn in La Jolla which was five star wonderful and included breakfast. Perhaps we were spoiled but I have no desire to ever stay at the Estancia again.

Like other reviews, our visit started with the brain dead group at the front desk, moved to our veranda room, which the front desk explained means the doors open outside ( in this case to a wall located near an employee walk gate that banged 20 times a day) not that the room actually has a veranda. Sooo many weddings and noise, and inconvenience. They should simply market this place as a convention center and then you would not expect it to be a quality hotel. Save your money and your nerves. You are not missing anything here but frustration at the incompetence of all the hotel employees. We had to call each day to actually get our room cleaned. Seriously!

High quality facility with excellent service. Beautiful, lush planted grounds, in the midst of the UCSD campus and across the road from the Salk Institute. Close to a hiking path, shuttle to the beach. I have visited this property twice, once 8 years ago, and once in Aug. 2017. I am impressed that the quality of the food in both on-site restaurants has been much higher than in other hotels I have visited. Very much worth eating on-site. The meeting facilities are excellent. Rooms on the two courtyards and the rooms above the walking path are quiet.
