Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa in La Jolla, California

Located in the charming community of La Jolla, just minutes from Torrey Pines Golf Course and 14 miles north of San Diego, Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa is a stylish retreat reminiscent of an early California ranch estate. The property - listed on Condé Nast Traveler's coveted Gold List and Hot List - pays homage to its rich history by emulating and utilizing materials from the original 1880s equestrian compound. The business center resembles the original caretaker's cottage, the intimate hotel lobby was created from the old farmhouse, and Mustangs & Burros, the hotel's rustic rancho-style bar, was inspired by the tack room. Even the restaurants reflect the old spirit in their design, menu concepts and gracious service.

This coastal hideaway is set on nearly ten tree-laden acres coupled with fragrant ground coverings such as rosemary and sage. The hotel houses a collection of freestanding Spanish buildings coupled with hidden courtyards and trailing pathways. Equestrian-style doors and sky-lit windows add a light and airy feeling to the plush guest rooms. Slip into the fitness room for an early morning workout, spend the afternoon draped across a massage table or do a little celebrating sideways at the hotel's very own wine bar. Dips in the cabana-flanked pool prove to be refreshing day or night. Venture off property to discover the pounding surf, verdant fairways, hidden hiking trails and protected wetlands. If you are more partial to Prada than park lands, head to the enchanting village area to prowl the designer shops and eateries.

My wife and I had a smallish king room for 3 nights while I attended a conference which was held primarily at the hotel. The room was very nice, the bed quite comfortable, good TV, separate john closet, complimentary wine and water. WiFi service was included and was very solid coverage throughout. Facilities all very clean, tidy, and attractive. Ours was a non-view room, but we didn't mind. The hotel catered breakfasts and lunches and a reception for the event and it was probably the best hotel provided food I've had. Hotel is a conveniently close drive to shopping, Village of La Jolla, walking trails, UCSD, and Birch Aquarium.

Beautiful property with wonderful caring staff. The Manager Cesar Aguilar was extremely professional in handling an unexpected situation. My family visits La Jolla frequently and we always encourage friends and family to stay at the Estancia La Jolla. Great food and drinks at the Mustang & Burros. Always a pleasure.

Our stay was one slip up after another. There was a large wedding the first night and a conference the next. It seemed the hotel personnel just couldn't keep up enough to also accommodate the individual guests. When I let them know about problems, they promised to help, but communications inevitably broke down. Really disappointing.

We booked two rooms here for a quick overnight stay in LaJolla and although the property is lovely and the rooms nice, the service wasn't up to par. Our rollaway bed took several hours to be delivered despite four calls to front desk and our room was without shampoo and conditioner. I had brought my own so it was ok. Our toilet ran on and off all night and it was quite noisy and irritating. We asked for a late check out (an hour past noon) and were told on Sunday they were not able to extend late checkout due to a full demand for rooms. Seemed unusual for a Sunday. Wouldn't stay here again. Gym and spa/pool area clean and quiet but nothing special.

Estancia is a big compound just across the street from the main entrance of the University of California San Diego, very convenient if you have business at UCSD. It often hosts conventions and meetings, but it also has a spa--which I confess I did not have enough time to take advantage of it. I used the gym (average equipment, small for such a big hotel) and the pool (good). Everything around the hotel is just fine, without neither infamy nor glory. The rooms are nice, the decor very predictable, the accessories standard. I had a nice third floor room with a balcony, in a secluded part of the compound. Once you are at Estancia, you are a bit stranded. There is an average Mexican restaurant onsite, and a cafeteria. The hotel is close to a great (steep) path leading down the bluffs to the beach, and also quite close to the Salk Institute (for architecture buffs).
