Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa in La Jolla, California

Located in the charming community of La Jolla, just minutes from Torrey Pines Golf Course and 14 miles north of San Diego, Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa is a stylish retreat reminiscent of an early California ranch estate. The property - listed on Condé Nast Traveler's coveted Gold List and Hot List - pays homage to its rich history by emulating and utilizing materials from the original 1880s equestrian compound. The business center resembles the original caretaker's cottage, the intimate hotel lobby was created from the old farmhouse, and Mustangs & Burros, the hotel's rustic rancho-style bar, was inspired by the tack room. Even the restaurants reflect the old spirit in their design, menu concepts and gracious service.

This coastal hideaway is set on nearly ten tree-laden acres coupled with fragrant ground coverings such as rosemary and sage. The hotel houses a collection of freestanding Spanish buildings coupled with hidden courtyards and trailing pathways. Equestrian-style doors and sky-lit windows add a light and airy feeling to the plush guest rooms. Slip into the fitness room for an early morning workout, spend the afternoon draped across a massage table or do a little celebrating sideways at the hotel's very own wine bar. Dips in the cabana-flanked pool prove to be refreshing day or night. Venture off property to discover the pounding surf, verdant fairways, hidden hiking trails and protected wetlands. If you are more partial to Prada than park lands, head to the enchanting village area to prowl the designer shops and eateries.

Stayed in La Jolla for Breeder's Cup weekend. We had two rooms on the ground level facing the courtyard. Found the property and rooms very calming amidst the crazy chaos that is Breeder's Cup. Staff was super friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Had breakfast in the restaurant every morning -- the egg white fritatta was so good, I had it every day (even though the rest of the menu looked amazing as well). Had a late dinner at Mustangs & Burros one night. Highly recommend the vegan chile relleno. and margaritas! Overall a very nice property. I would like to come back and plan a spa weekend.

Exquisite resort/hotel. The staff is remarkably well trained and responsive to every question and need. The hotel rooms are beautiful and well appointed. Great restaurant choices and the meeting/conference facilities are first rate.

We were in room 284 for a meeting onsite. 284 overlooks the courtyard, so was relatively quiet. It had a small balcony that I used for one of my breakfasts. The room is spacious with a king bed. Power on the nightstands was appreciated. The bathroom had a separate commode room. Single sink with some room to park cosmetics, but not overly generous. Excellent lighting. Tub/bath combo with strong jet from shower. Nice bath products. Large lighted closet with adequate hangers. Room was cleaned well by the delightful maid. Room was a little hot at night, but probably user error in managing the thermostat. Onsite restaurant with a delicious southwestern benedict on the veranda. If you want something lighter for breakfast, they have a little coffee shop with egg sandwiches made on site with croissants, muffins etc. There is another restaurant we did not try for dinner as well as a bar/tasting room of one of the local vineyards. Reasonably sized salt water pool with hot tub. Nice lobby with gas fire to warm you :). Beautiful grounds, impeccably groomed. Only disadvantage is you'll need a car or Uber/Lyft to the shopping district of La Jolla. If you are organized and lucky the hotel has a free shuttle. However, I wasn't able to use as I dawdled and it was already booked the time I needed it. But ride share was easy and quick. Price about $10 each way. And what's up with no paper or note pads in the room? I always need to jot something down. The maids didn't have them on their carts, but the desk gave me a pad.

Stayed in a Suite, which included a King Bed, Sofa, 2 sinks, and separate shower and tub. As part of the daily resort fee, you are entitled to one bottle of red wine (one per stay) and daily replenishment of bottled water and K-Cups to use in your in-room Keurig Coffee Machine. The room was nothing short of perfect. The balcony overlooking the courtyard was a nice touch. The bed was amazingly comfortable. The shower features two heads which, when used together, creates a fantastic shower experience. Robes are provided, and feature an extremely comfortable microfiber lining. Rooms were very clean and housekeeping does a very good job each day. Pool area is nice, and the hot tub was delightful on a cool fall night. Cons: The resort fee is a bit steep, considering all you get is one bottle of red wine (can't get white), and use of wi-fi and small fitness center. The wi-fi was on the slow side and the in-room Chromecast did not work on the TV. They charge you extra for late-check out, up to $100, which is also a bit steep, so we decided to just leave and drive around San Diego until our 9pm flight.

The drive into the property was lunch and impressive but the property itself underwhelmed. Staff was friendly and happy, the rooms were clean and had comfortable beds with nice linens, but overall it lacked the level of high-touch required at this price point. Hallways could use an update. Apparel for staff could use a bit of an upgrade too to reflect a bit higher level of professionalism. Just one person’s opinion!
