Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa in La Jolla, California

Located in the charming community of La Jolla, just minutes from Torrey Pines Golf Course and 14 miles north of San Diego, Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa is a stylish retreat reminiscent of an early California ranch estate. The property - listed on Condé Nast Traveler's coveted Gold List and Hot List - pays homage to its rich history by emulating and utilizing materials from the original 1880s equestrian compound. The business center resembles the original caretaker's cottage, the intimate hotel lobby was created from the old farmhouse, and Mustangs & Burros, the hotel's rustic rancho-style bar, was inspired by the tack room. Even the restaurants reflect the old spirit in their design, menu concepts and gracious service.

This coastal hideaway is set on nearly ten tree-laden acres coupled with fragrant ground coverings such as rosemary and sage. The hotel houses a collection of freestanding Spanish buildings coupled with hidden courtyards and trailing pathways. Equestrian-style doors and sky-lit windows add a light and airy feeling to the plush guest rooms. Slip into the fitness room for an early morning workout, spend the afternoon draped across a massage table or do a little celebrating sideways at the hotel's very own wine bar. Dips in the cabana-flanked pool prove to be refreshing day or night. Venture off property to discover the pounding surf, verdant fairways, hidden hiking trails and protected wetlands. If you are more partial to Prada than park lands, head to the enchanting village area to prowl the designer shops and eateries.

We booked a block of 10 rooms here for an event that we had to cancel. Our interaction with was time special events coordinator. As another reviewer noted, they seem like they are always trying to get extra money from you. Even though we cancelled more than 8 months out they were unwilling to do to reduce the 70% penalty for cancellation. I understand if we had cancelled less than 3 months out and they have to charge us for loss revenue. However, with 8 months, they will have plenty of time to rebook those rooms profiting off both the rooms and cancellation charge. We had no such problems with the other hotels. Lodge at Torry Pines let us cancel our reservations without penalty and gave us a full refund. Also The US Grant in SD gave us a group rate code without having to sign a contract or give a deposit. Hopefully others learn from our costly mistake of booking here.

I stayed here for the convenient location. It was walking distance to meetings. It's clearly a great retreat for vacationers, but not great for business. It was nice to have the offer of free wine in the room (although there was none), but I would have been happier with shampoo and a second bar of soap. The staff are friendly and engaging.

Everything was awesome--friendly service, very clean, pool area was great, grounds were immaculate. My only complaint is the feeling they were trying to get extra money out of me at the end. Nobody told us before we paid for the room that there would be an additional $58 per night for hospitality fee ($30/day) and self parking fee ($28/ day). Hate to think of what the valet parking would have been since it was $28 for self parking. I thought my 2 night stay was going to cost $519 but it was really $635. I wouldn't have had a problem paying $635 but it would be nice to know ahead of time instead of feeling like they are trying to sneak it past you when you check out (and do not have a choice but to pay it).

The Estancia is a relatively small hotel nestled near the Pacific Ocean (A ten-minute walk takes you to Black's Beach). Well-appointed rooms, friendly staff, a couple of good restaurants. Great saltwater pool! I came for an onsite business conference. I know I'll be back!

My husband and I wanted to stay outside downtown San Diego and be closer to La Jolla this time around. Honestly, we were looking for a weekend oasis and we found that at Estancia. From the moment you pull up to the front of the hotel and check-in you immediately feel like you're entering a very big spa. Complimentary refreshments, like cucumber water or some type of fruit water welcome guests in the lobby. The grounds are beautifully landscaped with private lawns to either lounge or play bocce ball. Anticipate a good amount of walking and stairs to get around on the property as there are several different buildings for guest rooms. I loved the Spanish-Rustic/spa-like vibe of the rooms. We felt so relaxed and very zen every time we re-entered the room. In fact, we loved the vibe so much, we ended up booking an extra night (a Sunday night) at the hotel and played hookie from work. We just couldn't do ONE night! Anyway, we will definitely be back. And if you're into a hearty delicious breakfast, definitely drop in at Adobe El Restaurante at the hotel (the plates are enough for 2 people). Their bloody mary's are superb as well. Also, you're only minutes away from the beach, restaurants, and shops in La Jolla. It's all perfect.
