Reviews for Grande Colonial La Jolla

La Jolla Adventure

The Grande Colonial Hotel is wonderful. The entire staff is amazing, especially Michelle, Isabel, and Eric. We received a warm welcome from the minute we arrived until we left, having stayed three nights. The lobby is elegant and the pool area, inviting. The rooms are comfortable and spacious. We had a room with an ocean view that was lovely. The location is the best! You can walk down to the Cove where the sea-lions are resting and the pelicans and seagulls are flying (about a block.) This is definitely the place to stay in LaJolla. We would love to return there again.

50th Wedding Anniversary

We decided to go to the San Diego area to celebrate our 50th Anniversary. After much research, we chose the Grande Colonial and made the right decision. We had an ocean-view king room on the 5th floor. The room was bright and airy, and the bed was comfortable. Snacks provided in the room were a nice treat. The staff was knowledgeable and friendly. The location is perfect with beachfront walks, restaurants, and shopping nearby. Uber was easily available for further excursion. We had a memorable stay.

The wonderful outweigh the quibbles - great stay

I returned to this hotel with my husband and kids after a wonderful solo stay I had here in 2019. (See my review). Overall I still loved it this time, but I realize not all rooms are created equal at this hotel. My first stay in 2019 when I was alone was in a corner King ocean view room in what appears to be the older part of the hotel. (When you're looking at the front desk, it was up a stair to the left of the front desk). That room was wonderful. This time returning with my family, we stayed in two rooms, and neither was as nice as that 2019 room. But my family adored this hotel and would return. Our first night we stayed in a ocean view queen suite in what appears to be a newer extension to the hotel. When you're looking at the front desk, it's to the right, past the "Sun Room". I think ours was 220 and had two queen beds in a room with an ocean view with a separate living room with a pullout couch. This was a last minute addition to our stay and we planned to move in to a bigger room after one night in this smaller room. The view was really nice, but there was a bad carpet smell in the room. It reminded me of a particularly bad rental I lived in in my early 20s. The windows opened, but didn't work very well and need some repairs. The room was reasonably priced, so I didn't feel ripped off, but I was glad to leave the room when it was time. (though the view was very nice). It should be said, the hotel went above and beyond to let us move straight from our first room to our second room without having to wait for the second room to be cleaned. The services throughout our stay were fantastic. The second room was a Garden Two Bed One Bath suite, number 139. There was the same carpet, but it didn't smell as bad as the other room. The bathroom was a little dank and would have been nice if there was a window in there or a better working fan to keep it smelling fresh. We knew when booking that the main bedroom with the king bed wouldn't have a window, so that wasn't a surprise, but I do urge other guests to look at the layout carefully so they aren't shocked by the dark room. Despite the bad parts of the room, we had a really great stay. Here are the things I love about this hotel: Fantastic food and service at the restaurant. The simplest things at breakfast are as thoughtfully prepared as the fanciest meals at dinner. Ashley at the bar made me the tastiest margarita I had on our vacation. Welcoming to children while maintaining a calm, genteel vibe. Small size means the common areas are relaxing and not too crowded. Nicely heated pool enjoyed by several kids, including our own. I loved laying on a lounge and glancing up at the ocean while watching kids swim. I like how our suite had three doors that opened straight to the outside, very convenient and airy. Kids could dash back and forth from pool to room very easily. Kitchen in our suite was very functional and we felt spoiled by the daily cleanings and turndown service. Free cokes, water bottles and snacks were provided in the rooms every day. What a rarity at a hotel these days! Location is awesome, kids loved strolling down to see the sea lions and seals. Ubering into downtown San Diego was pretty simple and surprisingly low on traffic. So many tasty places to eat and nice places to shop. The walk along the coast in La Jolla was fantastic, you will want to move to California permanently after a few days in this hotel! I hope to return someday!

Gem of a hotel in La Jolla

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 weeks ago

We had a weekend stay in San Diego and chose to stay in La Jolla. The Grand Colonial is located in the heart of La Jolla and a brief walk to La Jolla Cove and all the downtown shops and restaurants. The service was excellent- from the front door staff to reception. Every person was attentive and helpful. We stayed in a double queen - very clean room, nicely appointed bathroom with very comfortable beds. This was a gem of a hotel and would definitely come back.
