My husband and I were looking forward to staying at a nice resort when we came to Mexico on vacation. We stayed at Costabaja resort for one night with the intention of using the pool and hot tub. On the phone they told us the pool is usually available even after hours. When we got there the pool was closed for cleaning and there was no hot tub. We wanted to leave after finding this out as soon as we got there but they wouldn't give us a refund. We ended up having to stay even though we didn't want to. It cost us over 300$ for one night and not even a pool view, like they said we would have. So disappointed :(

We traveled to La Paz as a family vacation and were pleasantly surprised with Costa Baja Hotel as well as with the destination. The Hotel is great, the Marina is lovely, Beach Club is very nice and all the staff were very nice with us. We also had a great dinner at italian restaurant at the Marina and had a great breakfast outdoors at The Golf Club Restaurant. We did two tours with Baja Fun and had a wonderful time.

We decided to stay at CostaBaja due to its location directly on the beach, unlike most of the hotels in town. The resort is quite large, much of it devoted to private homes and condominiums. The hotel itself is perched on a hillside above the beach. Our room had a good view but it was a bit of a hike to the beach club located on the other side of the resort. The beach, which is lovely, was oddly deserted. There was a hut for watersport rentals (perfect ocean for SUP or kayak) but it was locked up. To be fair, I did not inquire about rentals at the front desk, so it may have been possible to arrange - just not very convenient. We visited the week after Easter and found the resort to be oddly empty, with the exception of a few families. The staff was pleasant, housekeeping uneven, as were the couple of meals we had in the on site restaurants. The beachside bar does make a good Cadillac margarita (not on the menu, just order it). The restaurants in the adjacent marina are adequate. Overall, I would say the hotel has not reached its potential. Had I not received a great deal on our room by booking well in advance, I would have been disappointed. If I had the opportunity to do-over, I would rent one of the ocean front villas on the property - they truly have a five star location.

I have traveled extensively in Mexico and I am very familiar with the games they play with exchange rates and doing their best to confuse you into thinking that you are getting a good exchange rate. I fully expected a hotel of this caliber to be different. I was wrong. Here is how it goes: We only needed one night there and rolled in and asked for a quote. "$280" they told us. A bit much for what it was, actually allot, but we were there and wanted to stay some place nice. Upon checkout I gave them my credit card and asked again what the final price would be and what their exchange rate was. They told me 'their' rate was 20.2:1. A great deal if you were buying Pesos from them but not so great if you have exchanged your pesos at 17.5 pesos to 1 dollar and then it takes you 20.2 pesos to pay for one dollar in hotel charges. So I decided to pay with my credit card and asked them to assure me that 280.00 was what was going to be charged. They told me absolutely and showed me the receipt. So here is the tricky slight of hand. On the bill said $280.00, but what they are really charging was in pesos... AT 20.2 TO ONE! So they take $280 dollars, multiply that by their imaginary made up rate of 20.2 and then run the bank charge for that many pesos. This then gets them $1 for every 17.5 pesos or whatever the bank rate is at the time of transaction. This in turn came out to $306 on my credit card. So I called them and they said that it was our banks exchange rate. I called the bank and they said it has nothing to do with what they charge. I then asked them what exactly the hotel actually collected and you guessed it, $306. I called the hotel back and we were shoved off to an accountant who gave us an email. We emailed that and, you guessed it, nothing. DO NOT fall for this scam! Don't let them play the peso game. Remember, what they charge is in pesos, not dollars, and they can only charge at bank rates, so if it doesn't add up, insist that their conversions be done at bank rates and not their made up numbers, or better yet, don't give them your business. Oh, and there is more. They said it came with free breakfasts but gave no vouchers or anything. When we had breakfast, they tried to bill us and we told them about the free breakfast with the room. It then because a huge hassle to straighten out.
