Surf & Sand Resort in Laguna Beach, California

Orange County's well-bred Laguna Beach is the backdrop to Surf & Sand Resort, which feels secluded despite its central location. The Pacific Ocean glimmers in newly renovated rooms and suites – a palate of cool whites, beige and aquamarine blends with the view seen through floor-to-ceiling windows. Chic cabanas flank a beachside infinity pool, and original artwork supports Laguna’s thriving art community.

Recline under a goose down comforter as dawn breaks over the ocean. Take a morning stroll to town – stop for coffee at a sidewalk café and browse the artwork on Gallery Row. Revive with a superfruit martini made with açai spirits and blueberry vodka on an oceanfront patio with glass walls. Finish the evening with Carlsbad black mussels in a vin jaune broth.

When I was a kid in the 1980's and 1990's, flying to Laguna Beach from Portland, Oregon, to spend Summers with my Mom, we would always go to the Surf & Sand for breakfast at least once. She loved the place, and would stay there a few times per year as a mini vacation. She was a very stylish woman, and after staying at the Surf and Sand recently, I can see why she loved it so much. My wife and I were recently in Laguna visiting family over a long July 4th weekend with our 1 year old son. Our family gave us an amazing gift, and told us that they would watch our son for a night so we could have a date night. WOW! BEST GIFT EVER! We decided to stay at the Surf & Sand for the night, and we are so happy we did. First of all, the Surf & Sand is in a great location. It is on a beautiful stretch of coastline, and it is also an easy walk to cute local shops, bars and restaurants. Plus, the Laguna Beach Trolley stops right out front, and it is a free ride North to downtown Laguna Beach, or South to the Ritz Carlton at Salt Creek. During our stay we walked to few shops where my wife found a great new dress, had mojitos at the Rooftop Lounge (Great view), and caught a solid reggae band at Mozambique across the street. Checking in was easy, and all the employees were fantastic throughout our stay ( Thanks guys!). The resort feels modern, luxurious, yet beachy. We walked to our room, opened the door, and were instantly impressed. The room was clean, well styled, and had an incredibly comfortable king bed that looked out over the blue Pacific. The bathroom was nice as well. The balcony overlooked the beach and had comfy chairs and a lounger to relax in. We spent the night with our sliding door open, listening to the waves pound the sand, and watching the moon reflect off the ocean. While we were there we explored the property. The pool was amazing, just right off the beach with plenty of chairs and places to lounge. There is also a nice area with tables and fire pits on the property where you can relax and enjoy a cocktail. We had dinner and drinks at Splashes while we were there, which was top notch, but that is for another review (try the octopus)! Even though we only spent 1 night there, we left feeling refreshed and relaxed. The Surf & Sand is definitely the place to stay in Laguna, stylish, friendly, with amazing views and people, I see why my Mom loved it so much. I want to thank everyone for making our stay so wonderful, we have found in our travels that people are what really make resorts stand out. We can't wait to come back for a long weekend.

Stayed here for a second time recently and enjoyed our stay again very much! The resort is very nice and comfortable. Excellent service and you can't beat the location - right on the beach! The food in the bar and restaurant is great. Will stay here again!

My family and I have been coming here every year since 1995. Once you step onto the property you're part of the Surf and Sand family. From the valet, to bellman, to the receptionist, and to housekeeping you get superior service. They remember your names and ask if they can make your stay any better. The property is in the ideal location but I believe most people want to feel special. Surf and Sand Resort does that effortlessly.

We are celebrating 34 years of marriage this year. Officially empty-nesters, we are out and off to rediscover one another ... our likes and dislikes, our common joys and our individuality. With a weeks vacation before us and the local temperature headed to the dreaded "triple digits", we called the Surf and Sand last minute. We are NOT high-rollers. Nor do we live on "bondo-bucks" (i.e., credit cards) so the decision to go away for a night faced some monetary constraints. Nonetheless, I contacted the Surf and Sand and requested the most economical lodging they had available. Settling on a room overlooking the pool, we were able to splurge and also purchase the "Resort Package" that covered parking, the "resort fee", and breakfast for two. We were excited! Escaping the heat and off to beautiful Laguna Beach. Though only an hour away from our Inland Empire home, we watched the "outside temperature" dump a full 25 DEGREES and we both sighed "relief"!!! We were not, however, in no way, shape, or form ready for the surprise the Front Desk had prepared for us. When we checked in we were placed in a top floor suite complete with a breathtaking view (all rooms face the ocean, but from our perch we could watch the waves roll and the sea gulls soar below us!!!). The corner room had a view up the coast too, a nice sitting area to enjoy the view, and a whirlpool style bath tub!!! (< You bet I took a bath!) Though we had planned dinner in their restaurant, Splashes, we decided to stay in our room and marvel in the view. Plus, the Room Service menu offered many value entrees and sides not available in Splashes. The dinner was incredible. Prosciutto Flatbread for my bride and a Blackened Swordfish Sandwich for me plus we added an assortment of sides. The meal was a real epigastric delight! A wonderful night basking in the lower temps and listening to the waves crash below was such a treat. The comfortable bed and top shelf linens added to our comfort. The following morning (we could only stay one night), I rose to a long walk on the beach, hit the nicely equipped gym, and grabbed coffee from "Perk Place", the on-site espresso bar, to take back up to the Mrs. who had slept in. The "included" breakfast was ANY two entrees and two non-alcoholic beverage from the Splashes or the Room Service menu. We decided to dine in again and continue to thrill at our views! Our choice was Steak & Eggs for me and the Omelete Bernard for my better half. Phenomenal. The accompanying potatoes were to die for: Herb-Roasted Fingerling Potatoes for me and Country Potatoes with the omelete. Sadly, we departed at noon. Checkout was a breeze and we rained thank-you's on the staff for the great treatment. Would we visit again? ABSOLUTELY!

First off, Laguna is the coolest and best little strip of a beach town on the west coast. The surf vibe, the laid back cafes and shops. The Surf and Sand is blocks from all of this, yet seems like its on world once you are there. Set, as the name implies, directly on the sand and the surf. We stayed on a Thursday / Friday in late June in the California Suite, which is a two bedroom penthouse in the beach building. Beautifully appointed and new, it has a 180 ocean and beach view and sat 5 stories above the pool. We ate that evening in the Splashes Restaurant which earns its name at high tide. the food was great, service..not so much. I would recommend eating in the bar, same food, same view, less expensive and not a 3 hour deal. other than that, the coffee shop, the beach was all fantastic. The service of the Hotel is A+ and we will visit again.
