Surf & Sand Resort in Laguna Beach, California

Orange County's well-bred Laguna Beach is the backdrop to Surf & Sand Resort, which feels secluded despite its central location. The Pacific Ocean glimmers in newly renovated rooms and suites – a palate of cool whites, beige and aquamarine blends with the view seen through floor-to-ceiling windows. Chic cabanas flank a beachside infinity pool, and original artwork supports Laguna’s thriving art community.

Recline under a goose down comforter as dawn breaks over the ocean. Take a morning stroll to town – stop for coffee at a sidewalk café and browse the artwork on Gallery Row. Revive with a superfruit martini made with açai spirits and blueberry vodka on an oceanfront patio with glass walls. Finish the evening with Carlsbad black mussels in a vin jaune broth.

We arrived early for our 4 pm check-in but this did not present a problem. We used valet parking and they checked our bags until our room was ready. A little pricey at $35 a day but no other choice as parking is nonexistent near the hotel. Great accommodations while we waited for our room. Our room overlooked the ocean with a small balcony patio. The room was nicely appointed. A point of note is the breaking surf directly below our room. If you are a light sleeper you may want to consider a non surf side room. The service is indisputably the best I have ever had from valet, front desk check-in, restaurant, bar, room and check-out, could not be better. Food selection and service was excellent. Great get-away place to be pampered.

We always end up staying a few times a year at the Surf and Sand! Surprisingly, there is very few hotels in California with that old school ocean front feel. The place is small and totally free of any " fuss". The location is brilliant, on a great beach for the kids. Walking distance to all shops and restaurants. The store across the street " Soul Project " is a must . The staff is always sweet and attitude free. The restaurant is just great, best breakfast ever. The waiters have been there for ever, all eager to help. The place is ready for a little updating. But there is this ease when you get at the Surf and Sand that I have not been able to find in any other hotel in Southern California, true California living! Our kids, even the teenager love it there!! We bring our dog as well who loves running on the beach mornings and nights! The place has a few " weaknesses " as far as pool and beach service, but we have never ever been disappointed by the Surf and Sand!

Okay----let me be clear, this is a lovely place. The service is wonderful, restaurant is delicious, our room had a gorgeous view, but......( no air conditioning) in the rooms. I know it's California and lots of places do not have AC, but when you're playing $800 a night for a room, you'd like the basics. If you go, don't go when it's hot or during peak season. It's was 82 degrees outside when we were there and we decided to leave after the first night because it was too hot in our room. (Even with windows open and box fans running) Happy traveling!

We made the mistake of trying to stay in Laguna Beach during Pageant of the Masters. Even booking 4 months in advance the prices were outrageous and everything was either sold out or required a 2-night minimum. So Surf & Sand was the only option. For $800/night - it should be luxurious in every way. It was not. The pool was extremely overcrowded, due in large part to the resort offering day passes to non-hotel guests. We couldn't find a place to sit. We originally booked a room with a full ocean view, but a few days before check-in learned that our room was not air conditioned. Given the summer heat, that was unacceptable, so we were switched to a room with air conditioning and no ocean view. The room was clean and spacious, but very dated. And the shower was so small that you could not wash your hair without banging your elbows on the walls or shower door. And the shampoo and conditioner bottles were so small, there was barely enough for two people to take two showers.
