Surf & Sand Resort in Laguna Beach, California

Orange County's well-bred Laguna Beach is the backdrop to Surf & Sand Resort, which feels secluded despite its central location. The Pacific Ocean glimmers in newly renovated rooms and suites – a palate of cool whites, beige and aquamarine blends with the view seen through floor-to-ceiling windows. Chic cabanas flank a beachside infinity pool, and original artwork supports Laguna’s thriving art community.

Recline under a goose down comforter as dawn breaks over the ocean. Take a morning stroll to town – stop for coffee at a sidewalk café and browse the artwork on Gallery Row. Revive with a superfruit martini made with açai spirits and blueberry vodka on an oceanfront patio with glass walls. Finish the evening with Carlsbad black mussels in a vin jaune broth.

We had the greatest time visiting mini paradise in Laguna Beach. Surf and Sand has become a home away from home and we love spending time there any opportunity we get. During our last visit we had the chance to experience the spa under the new management. Ana, the spa supervisor is a sweetheart who goes above and beyond to make sure the guests receive a 5-star treatment. The only bad thing about my trip was that it was toooooo short!!!! Thank you Surf and Sand, thank you Anahit and April the Spa and thanks to the front desk personnel for amazing room upgrade and hospitality!!! We'll be back!

Bought a brand new car on Thursday. Picked it up on Friday and drove immediately to the hotel with my famly. The car is a "higher end" car. They parked it right in front of the hotel in their "staging" area with a tremendous amount of activity. When I asked whether it would be safe there, was told by the valet that they're all experts and it would be fine. Went out the following day and there was a dent in the car. Now, they are claiming that they are not responsible. And, by the way, it took 3 calls to the hotel and 2 weeks of waiting before anyone even returned my call. Beyond that, the food was marginal and the hotel is not particularly young child friendly (lots of stairs). The view is amazing. But, it isn't a four of five star hotel so the Montage is a better value.

My friend and I stayed at the Surf and Sand for two nights. We are 23 year old girls, and we're definitely treated as such. The only sincere employee was the bell man, Nick. The front desk and concierge managed to move at the slowest pace possible. Additionally, the system was down so all the reservations were done by hand. We booked ours on TripAdvisor for a lower rate, and had to argue to keep that rate because they couldn't actually access TripAdvisor reservations. The main woman at the front desk was extremely unfriendly, and would never look up or smile. When we went to the pool or beach, we were never served. We had to go up to get towels, order food, or order drinks. We had to constantly ask for a server, which made us feel like nuisances. When we went to the restaurant, we were reminded that we were the only customers at breakfast and our server may want her mid morning break and just a heads up. Completely unnecessary to remind us of that, and we felt we had to rush through our meal. When we checked out, we had to wait at least a half hour for the front desk people to figure out the TWO other guests in front of us in line. They had four employees and yet could not seem to check anyone out. When we did check out, we were charged a large fee for parking, even though we were very clear we did not have a car and did not want parking from the beginning. When I pointed this out, the main woman who works the front desk snapped at me and said "they didn't know we didn't have a car, so how are they supposed to know not to charge us?" I'm guessing she was so rude because of my age, but I was appalled at how she talked to me. The man that was helping her was very nice, but clearly incredibly incompetent because he had to re print out receipt 3 times to fix it. After all of this, we were then charged twice for our room. My friend also received a text message several days after we checked out with the notification that our room was ready. Clearly a very disorganized hotel. We very much liked our room, but the hotel was definitely not worth the 450 dollars a night they charge. We payed 300 a night with TripAdvisor, making it far easier to stomach. I don't recommend anyone pay the full price, purely because the employees at the surf and sand are not those I would employ at a 5 star hotel. It's beautiful, but location is really it's only plus.

We truly love this hotel. It's our second visit, this time for a week, and all of the previous exceptionally high standards were met again. The rooms are well appointed, beautiful and comfortable. The views as breathtaking as we remembered. We were welcomed back and always felt well looked after, particularly by the concierge ladies Diane and Sharon. It must also be said that every single member of staff encountered anywhere in the hotel were helpful, happy and polite. Pool service was superb and we saw whales and dolphins every day. The terraces are lovely for relaxing by day or night and perfect for fire pit smores This hotel has got it all right. The restaurant and bar are excellent too. We hope to go back, as it always hurts to leave this special place. Out two sons who are 10 and thirteen love it as much as us parents, the ocean and pool are all we all need. Also good shops and restaurants near by if you want them. We hope to go back again.

The view is amazing, but beyond the hotel rests on its laurels by touting its spectacular location as its ace in the hole. As far as the resort itself, it is a hodgepodge of different outdated buildings that make the journey to/from your room like a consistent maze. The rooms themselves sport small, outdated bathrooms with very few amenities (hope you don't want mouthwash!). The shower in our room was smaller than those in most cruise ship cabins. Most shockingly, the hotel DOES NOT HAVE AIR CONDITIONING!!!! How, in 2017, can a hotel in Southern California not offer air conditioning? That should really be disclosed. As someone who likes the room relatively cool, especially when I sleep, this was a nightmare. During the daylight hours the room temperatures can be relatively brutal. The staff obviously gets this complaint regularly and are quick to suggest the ceiling fan. They should probably be aware that warm air swirling around doesn't necessarily make it cooler. The oceanfront rooms are literally above the ocean. It's a pretty amazing sight to wake up and see. However, if you are sensitive to noise, beware that the tide at this particular beach makes the waves incredibly loud. Every minute or so you hear what sounds like an earth shattering explosion in your room but it's just another whitecap hitting the sand. While some may enjoy the white noise, the hotel clearly knows its a problem as they provide ear plugs next to the beds, rather than spending the money to put in proper double paned class which would reduce the sound. There are some nice common areas, including a nice pool area, but the walkways, lack of common nice lobby and outdoor hallways outside the rooms give you the distinct feeling you're in a very nice motel, rather than a four or five store hotel. Adding to this feeling is the fact the hotel does not offer any kind of room service outside of the restaurants normal operating hours (10pm most nights). Having arrived at 10:30, we were starving and the best the front desk lady could suggest was "I think there's a Taco Bell?" Really, that's the suggestion? Props to the valet guys as they were great and the hard working room service guy who we used on the second night, before their abrupt cutoff time. Anyways, if the rate is good and you're looking for the most impressive views with easy access to the beach then this might be a good option. If you're looking for true beachfront luxury, look elsewhere.
