Surf & Sand Resort in Laguna Beach, California

Orange County's well-bred Laguna Beach is the backdrop to Surf & Sand Resort, which feels secluded despite its central location. The Pacific Ocean glimmers in newly renovated rooms and suites – a palate of cool whites, beige and aquamarine blends with the view seen through floor-to-ceiling windows. Chic cabanas flank a beachside infinity pool, and original artwork supports Laguna’s thriving art community.

Recline under a goose down comforter as dawn breaks over the ocean. Take a morning stroll to town – stop for coffee at a sidewalk café and browse the artwork on Gallery Row. Revive with a superfruit martini made with açai spirits and blueberry vodka on an oceanfront patio with glass walls. Finish the evening with Carlsbad black mussels in a vin jaune broth.

I've been coming here for 40 years now and have been instrumental in booking over 600 room nights into the property, so some of what follows comes as no surprise. First of all, the link between housekeeping and the front desk continues to be problematic. On our second day, we returned after a day at the pool to find that our room still hadn't been made up - at 5pm! Complained to the front desk but to no avail. Left to go to dinner at 6pm - still no response. (Perhaps one signal that all isn't well in this area is that there's no button on the phone for housekeeping). Anyway, the room was finally cleaned while we were at dinner. Speaking of dinner, we ordered the artisanal cheese plate at Splashes, waited half an hour for it to arrive, and when it finally showed up it had two small pieces of cheese and a bunch of grapes - it should have been called a fruit plate. Even our waiter was embarrassed and called us later to say so and that he'd removed the charge from our bill. The pool area is too small, many of the chairs are broken, the shade drapes are non functional and very dirty, and the sound of the ocean has now been drowned out by non-stop very loud rock music. We asked for it to be turned down or stopped but were told management says it has to be played from noon to 5pm. Checking with other guests, they all agreed it was a bad idea - even the staff agreed but no one was authorized to do anything about it. Finally, I was there to celebrate my birthday which my wife had notified the property about in advance but it seems to have passed unnoticed by the staff. Over the years, the room prices have increased quite noticeably but the service has decreased or remained unchanged. Also, be aware that the room rate quoted doesn't include a 14% occupancy tax. Together with the parking fee and the resort fee (which also has a resort fee tax) this added another $100 to our daily room rate. It's still a great location and the rooms are quite nice, but the value is now problematic for this guest. It's probably time to look for a new place to stay.

Wife and I had quick local getaway. Location is great. It's about 1 mile from downtown Laguna Beach. It's right on the beach. I think all the rooms have an ocean views. The 2 restaurants both almost sit on top of the beach. The pool overlooks the beach. If you want beachfront, this is the place. There are a few cons. It does run a bit pricey. They do nickel and dime you. $20 for resort fee and $35 a night for overnight parking. The wifi is nice and fast. 60mbs down and 60mps up. They've maintained it relatively well, but there are a few places where you can see the age or just accelerated wear from the salty ocean air. Only some of the rooms have AC. Usually not a big issue as the rooms have ceiling fans and it usually doesn't get too hot being right on the beach.... but if it gets super hot I could vacation quickly going downhill when you can't sleep at night due to the heat/humidity. The beach is only a few steps down from the pool area. They have their own beach chairs and umbrellas. The beach is almost completely private. Shared only with a few other hotels. There are large rock outcroppings on the north and south side that shield the beach from the throng of public crowds. Didn't try any of the food. Too many other great options in town. If you're looking for beachfront and ocean views this is the place.

Great hotel in Laguna Beach from Lisa at reservations, Zack at the front desk and the two ladies at the Concierges desk. The room was spacious for a hotel room and very comfortable, the view was great, the restaurants, beach, pool etc... were excellent. Everyone was very nice and upbeat. We loved our stay!

Spent Labor Day weekend at the beautiful Surf & Sands Resort. Over the years we have vacationed at many luxury resorts, but have always found the service and the hospitality at Surf & Sands to be world class. The staff works hard to make sure your stay is exceptional and the grounds and facility is always up to par. Location, location, location is what makes all of this completely wonderful!

We recently spent the weekend at this amazing hotel. The location is incredible, right on the beach and easy walk to local stores and restaurants down PCH. We really enjoyed our time and our kids can't wait to go back!
