So Close, Yet a World Away Because of the nature of my work, I spend more than half of each year living in hotels. And whenever my schedule gives me a little breathing room, I tend to travel again. Hotels, therefore, are not simply places where I stay while on holiday. Over the years, I have lived in hotels in many cities and spent my time off visiting luxury hotels and resorts in different parts of the world. When I truly want to rest, I am particularly drawn to places such as the Maldives, Mauritius and Palawan, where beautiful natural surroundings and private pool villas offer a genuine sense of escape. Each of those destinations has been wonderful in its own way, and I still carry many unforgettable memories from them. But after years of travelling this way, I seem to have developed an assumption without quite realising it: To truly escape everyday life, you have to travel a long way from it. Long flights, connections, another drive, and sometimes a boat or an additional flight seemed to be the price of reaching that sense of peace and separation from the outside world. The journey itself can, of course, be part of the experience, but I have often felt that it is a pity to spend so much valuable holiday time simply getting to the place where the holiday really begins. Five nights and six days at Banyan Tree Lăng Cô changed that assumption. It is only about an hour by car from Da Nang. And yet, once you arrive, it is surprisingly difficult to believe that you were in the city only an hour earlier. Mountains, sea, lagoon and forest surround the resort, and as you enter, the noise and pace of the outside world seem to fall away naturally. There was no long-haul flight. No complicated connection. No boat to catch. And yet I found here the same sense of distance from the world that I had travelled so much farther to find elsewhere. In geographical terms, I had not gone very far. In every other sense, I felt a world away. A Small World of Its Own The appeal of Banyan Tree Lăng Cô cannot be explained simply by a beautiful pool villa. There is the privacy of the villa and its own pool, of course, but beyond it the mountains, sea, beach, lagoon and beautifully maintained gardens seem to flow naturally into one another. It does not feel like a resort imposed upon a dramatic landscape. It feels as though it has found its place within it. You can spend an entire day doing absolutely nothing in your villa and feel that the day has been well spent. You can slow down at the spa, linger over a meal, or end the evening at Thu Quan with a properly made cocktail. And the moment you feel like moving, an entirely different day is waiting for you. You can head out to sea or follow the river and discover another side of Lăng Cô. Here, I never felt that I had to sacrifice experience in order to rest, or sacrifice rest in order to experience something. A perfect day of doing nothing and a day so full that there never seems to be enough time can exist in exactly the same place. I loved that balance. The natural setting also brought back one of my most treasured travel memories. I have watched the sunrise in many parts of the world, but Mauritius still holds the finest sunrise I have ever seen. Despite all the travelling I have done since, that memory has never quite been displaced. Then, one early morning in Lăng Cô, I went up the hill while it was still dark and waited for the sun to rise. For the first time in a long while, I found myself thinking of that morning in Mauritius. From the hill, the sky slowly began to change. The outline of the sea emerged from the darkness, and light gradually spread between the mountains and the water as a new day began. There was very little to say at that moment. I simply watched. I took plenty of photographs, but photographs cannot quite capture the stillness or the feeling of being there at that hour. I do not use the word “best” lightly when I travel, and if I am being precise, Mauritius still remains my favourite sunrise. But the sunrise from the hills of Lăng Cô was beautiful enough to stand alongside it in my memory. For me, that is very high praise indeed. When the Spa Becomes Part of the Day From the day I arrived until the day I left, I visited Banyan Tree Spa every day — six treatments in total. At first, the spa was simply one of the pleasures I had planned for the trip. After a few days, however, going there had become a natural part of the rhythm of my day. There is a quietness to the space itself, and a thoughtfulness in the therapists’ touch. From the moment you enter, everything seems designed to slow you down a little. It does not need to surprise you with something new every day. What it offers instead is a sense of calm and consistency that makes you want to return the following day. So I did. Every day. Dining That Gave Me No Reason to Leave When you stay at one resort for several days, dining becomes more important than it might first appear. Even the most beautiful resort can begin to feel limited if the food becomes repetitive. At Banyan Tree Lăng Cô, meals became another part of the day that I genuinely looked forward to. One particularly memorable evening was dinner at Saffron. As Banyan Tree’s signature restaurant, I arrived with high expectations. The food, setting and atmosphere came together beautifully, but what made the evening especially memorable was the service from ZIMA. To me, good service is not simply about being friendly or responding efficiently when something is requested. The difference often lies in reading the table, understanding the flow of a meal, and noticing what might be needed before the guest has to ask. That was the kind of attentiveness I experienced from ZIMA. She never made her presence intrusive, yet somehow seemed to be there at exactly the right moments. Small details were handled naturally and thoughtfully. As a result, my evening at Saffron became more than a very good dinner. It became a dining experience in which I felt genuinely looked after. Azura offered something quite different. I had both lunch and dinner there, and I enjoyed seeing how the character of the restaurant changed with the time of day. Lunch felt relaxed and easy, perfectly suited to the pace of Lăng Cô. In the evening, the same space became quieter and more intimate. Experiencing Azura at both times gave me two different impressions of the same restaurant, and I enjoyed both. If Saffron felt like a destination for a special evening, Azura was the sort of place I could happily return to during the day and again after sunset. And after dinner, there was little reason to leave the resort. I could simply move on to Thu Quan, have a cocktail and allow the day to come to a quiet end. Taken together, these experiences reinforced my feeling that Banyan Tree Lăng Cô is not simply a beautiful place to stay. It is a destination resort in which an entire journey can unfold without ever feeling confined. Lăng Cô Was Never Only About Rest Another thing I loved was how naturally quiet relaxation and outdoor adventure could coexist. The programmes offered through the Water Sports Centre did not feel like activities added merely to fill a resort schedule. They became a way of getting outside and experiencing another side of Lăng Cô. One of them was the ATV Safari. It offered a completely different way of experiencing the surroundings from being on the water. There was something wonderfully enjoyable about moving from the stillness of the spa to climbing onto an ATV and heading out into the landscape. That freedom became one of my favourite things about staying here. I could decide to do absolutely nothing, and then change my mind and suddenly find myself in the middle of an entirely different experience. But of all the activities offered through the Water Sports Centre, the one that completely won me over was the Jet Ski Safari. I own a jet ski myself, so riding one is certainly not a novelty for me. I initially assumed this would simply be another resort activity. It was not. Usually, if you ride a jet ski at sea, you ride at sea. If you ride on a river, you ride on a river. At Lăng Cô, the two become part of the same journey. Out at sea, there is open water and the freedom to enjoy speed. Then you enter the river, and everything changes. You naturally slow down. You pass small fishing villages, watch herds of water buffalo, see a temple by the water and travel through stretches of mangroves. Only moments earlier you were racing across open water; suddenly, you find yourself moving quietly through scenes of everyday life in Vietnam. It feels like two completely different journeys on the same jet ski. I loved it. So I did it again the next day. And then again. By the end of my stay, I had done the Jet Ski Safari four times. But the number four is not really the best measure of how much I enjoyed it. My fourth and final Jet Ski Safari was on the morning I checked out. Most people spend their final morning packing, having breakfast and slowly preparing to leave. I did not want to let the last few hours in Lăng Cô simply slip away. So I went back out on the water. I crossed the sea once more, entered the river once more, and only after returning to the resort did I finally prepare to leave. The fact that I did it four times says something. The fact that I still wanted one more ride on the morning I was leaving says much more. The Warmth Here Is Not Accidental Over the course of my stay, I began paying attention to something beyond the landscape, the food and the activities. The people. The mornings were particularly revealing. From early in the day, members of the management and senior leadership were personally present, warmly greeting guests, making eye contact, asking how they were and quietly making sure everything was going well. Seeing senior management in a luxury resort is not remarkable in itself. What felt different here was that they did not appear simply to be supervising hospitality from behind the scenes. They were practising it themselves. As the days passed, I began to see a connection between that visible leadership and the attitude of the people throughout the resort. It was not limited to butlers, spa therapists, restaurant staff or buggy drivers. I noticed the same sense of care among the people tending the gardens, looking after the landscaping, maintaining the villas, cleaning, and caring for the pools and facilities. What impressed me most were the moments when nobody appeared to be watching. Someone would be quietly attending to a small detail in the garden. Someone else would be checking a path or maintaining a corner of the property that most guests would probably never consciously notice. Those small, largely invisible acts are what keep a beautiful resort beautiful. A beautiful villa can be built. A beautiful garden can be designed. Service standards can be established and staff can be trained. But sincerity cannot be scripted. And when that sincerity is not confined to a few exceptional employees but seems to appear naturally throughout an organisation, I do not believe it happens by accident. It becomes a culture. And behind a good culture is leadership that creates it, demonstrates it and protects it. For that reason, along with my thanks to everyone who made this stay so memorable, I would also like to express my sincere appreciation and respect to the management and leadership of Banyan Tree Lăng Cô. What they have created is more than a high standard of service. It is an environment in which people seem genuinely proud of the place where they work — and guests can feel that pride without anyone having to explain it. There are several people in particular whose names I would like to mention. Dung — The Beginning and the End of My Lăng Cô Journey My Banyan Tree Lăng Cô experience began with Dung, and it ended with Dung. He was the driver who collected me in Da Nang and brought me to Lăng Cô, and when my stay was over, he was there again for the journey back. His excellent English, polished manners and natural sense of humour made an immediate impression. By the time I reached the resort, Banyan Tree Lăng Cô had already made a wonderful first impression. Five nights later, Dung helped make the final one just as good. I used to think that the hospitality of a great hotel began when you entered the lobby. Not this time. The hospitality of Banyan Tree Lăng Cô began the moment Dung first opened the car door. Fayaz Samsudeen — A True Host During my stay, I often encountered Fayaz Samsudeen in the restaurants and around the resort. I do not remember him simply because he was particularly kind to me. What impressed me more was watching how he treated everyone. He was always aware of what was happening around him. If someone appeared to need assistance, he would approach naturally. His manner was consistent from one guest to another, and his kindness never felt forced or performative. Seeing him repeatedly made me think that a truly good host is not someone who appears only when a guest asks for help. A good host is already paying attention before the guest needs to ask. That is the kind of hospitality I saw in Fayaz. Emmanuele and the Evenings at Thu Quan I would also like to mention Emmanuele, the bartender at Thu Quan, the resort’s library-inspired bar. I enjoy cocktails, and when I travel I often seek out good bars. The cocktails Emmanuele prepared were sophisticated, beautifully balanced and clearly made with skill. But recipes are not what I remember most. A great bartender does more than make drinks. He helps create the conversation, the atmosphere and, ultimately, the time a guest spends at the bar. That is what my evenings at Thu Quan became. I remember not simply having excellent cocktails, but spending genuinely enjoyable evenings in a very good bar. An Unexpected Friendship at the Water Sports Centre And finally, I would especially like to thank the entire Water Sports Centre crew. We first met because I wanted to experience the resort’s activities. But after the ATV Safari, repeated Jet Ski Safaris and several days of seeing one another, the relationship gradually became much less formal. One afternoon, we sat together, ate durian and laughed. On my final evening, I invited the crew and their families to join me for dinner at a local restaurant. That evening became one of the warmest and most personal memories of the entire trip. There was nothing elaborate about it, nor did there need to be. We ate, talked and laughed together. We had first met as resort staff and guest. By the end, we were saying goodbye more like friends. The fact that such a connection could develop over the course of one stay says a great deal about the kind of hospitality I experienced here. I left with more than memories of excellent service. I left with the memory of having met genuinely good people. One Day Later, and I Am Already Looking at My Calendar As the time to leave approached, I did not feel that I had stayed long enough. I wanted another slow morning. Another walk along paths that had already begun to feel familiar. Another chance to greet people whose faces I had come to recognise. As I write this, it has been only one day since I returned to Da Nang from Lăng Cô. The trip has barely had time to become a memory. And yet I am already looking at my calendar. Not to decide where I should travel next. I am looking for when I can return to Banyan Tree Lăng Cô. A good journey leaves you with good memories. A very good one makes you want to return someday. But every so often, you find a place that has you looking for your next available date before you have even fully accepted that the trip is over. Banyan Tree Lăng Cô has become that place for me. For years, I assumed that a truly special escape required travelling far. This stay left me with a different question: Do we really have to travel so far to find somewhere extraordinary? Perhaps what matters is not the distance we travel. Perhaps what matters is how far a place can take us from everyday life. The more you travel, the more accustomed you become to asking where you should go next. But very occasionally, a place makes you stop looking for the next destination and start looking instead for the date when you can return. Perhaps that is one definition of a truly special place: somewhere that can make even a well-travelled person wonder, “Do I really need to go any farther?” So close, yet a world away. That is what Banyan Tree Lăng Cô was for me. And only one day after leaving, I am already looking forward to going back.

We had such a great time here! A special thanks to Nhi, who helped us arrange and book everything during our stay. We tried so many activities, including bird watching, learning Vietnamese, meditation, tea culture and candle making. It was really fun and made our stay much more special. The housekeeping team was also so sweet! They helped us fold the towels into the shapes we wanted and even created a little “towel zoo” for us. It was super cute and such a lovely surprise! Also, all the staff were super friendly and welcoming. We also loved our dinner at Saffron, the Thai food was creative and delicious, and even the scenery on the way to the restaurant was beautiful. Overall, it was a really memorable experience. If we come back to Vietnam, we would definitely love to stay here again! ❤️

SAFFRON restaurent is amazing, the most restaurant in Banyantree , the food so delicious and the staff were so friendly and helpful. They helped me have a perfect and romantic dinner with my family. We stay at a beach villa for 4 nights. The tranquil and beautiful environment here makes us so relaxed. Everything here is so perfect except the problem of mosquitoes. All of staff here are so friendly and passionate. It’s one of our favorite resorts and we think we will come back in the future!

Our villa hosts Yen, Tuyen, Olga and Jade looked after us so well it made our stay special and enjoyable. Their wonderful hospitality is unparalleled. The resort manager Dao and Min were always there to check on us. The spa staff Hailey, Nastya, Chi, Tulip, Pearly, Daisy, Vicky were all amazing. Wish we can remember everyone’s names because they all deserve special mention and equally gave us amazing treatments. Everyone in the resort are friendly and made us feel welcomed and made sure we are well attended to. Our villa is very well appointed and very clean. We had everything we needed. The food in all their restaurants were delicious. There were several activities to cater to everyone’s preferences. We definitely want to be back again in the future.
