Sublime Samana in Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic

Sublime Samana, on the Dominican Republic’s Samana Peninsula is a tropical paradise not known by many, which preserves its existence as an unspoiled treasure. Starfish mating near black coral in the crystal-clear water. Ocean breezes rustle palm trees expertly landscaped throughout the grounds. Elegant white linen cabanas dot the lawn. An open layout invites sunbeams and breezes into the hotel, suites and restaurants, ensuring a natural, beachside vibe every moment. Menus here focus on fish – like the red snapper of Samana – caught just off the beach.

Stumble out of your bed onto your private balcony for fresh breakfast delivered by the friendly staff. Head right out onto the sand with book, sunglasses and towel in hand – no need to do a thing aside from take in the pristine beach and waters. Navigate to the Beachside Grill for lunch, or stay put for the bar’s “cocos frios.” Taste a fresh mango daiquiri. After lunch, let the resort arrange a whale-watching excursion. Upon your return to the shore, motivate into Las Terrenas, the nearby town where the Pueblo de los Pescadores (Fishermen’s Village) offers a collection of open-air seafood restaurants – like Comedor los Chicos, which doesn’t have a phone but does have fish prepared the local way, “con coco,” or with tomato, garlic and coconut milk.

Beautiful property. Rooms are spacious but have a funny sewer smell and cable TV not working at all so all channels are fuzzy and unwatchable (here now). Beach staff is very nice. A lot of the staff cannot speak English. Wifi is so spotty it's not useable in many areas like the beach. Will reserve judgement but certainly frustrated a bit.

Our stay at the beautiful and peaceful Sublime exceeded our expectations. Each and every staff member gets a gold star as they were engaging, friendly, and ready to serve. Our casita was very clean and spacious and nicely decorated, the bed and towels were of high quality, the A/C works GREAT so we slept really well. Twice we were given fruit infused water at the turndown service, would have loved it every night, not sure why they were inconsistent, it's such a nice touch. The property is maintained with excellent care, the pools are very clean, you can walk on the beach and swim in the ocean, it's very impressive with gorgeous palms!! Very comfortable lounge chairs right on the beach, move to the far left if you prefer not to hear the music coming from the hotel next door. Enjoyed our breakfast each morning, my husband loved the ham and cheese omelette and I enjoyed the quinoa bowl and fresh watermelon juice. Be sure to try the cold coconut water straight from the coconut at their restaurant and bar on the beach. One evening we ate dinner right on the beach as they moved all the table on to the sand and served our fresh fish and vegetables on small individual grills right on our table. We did stroll down the beach and had lunch off property at 2 local beachside eateries, nice to change it up and enjoy some local culture. All in all we loved our stay and highly recommend the Sublime Samana, I know we will be going back as the drive from Santo Domingo is very easy and safe on the new toll roads, do not to exceed the speed limit as the police have radar guns and do patrol the roads. It's easy to relax at Sublime Samana, we came home completely refreshed.

My wife and I spent a week here, and loved it. First, we spent the entire day traveling and our layover flight from Miami to Santo Domingo was two hours late. We got in around 9, and there was a 1hour and 45 minute shuttle ride ahead of us. Once we got into the shuttle, the hotel called the driver and asked if we wanted some food waiting for us. That was a class act of kindness and thoughtfulness. They also had a bottle of wine waiting for us. Because we got in so late, we had no idea how beautiful the property was until the next morning. Let me explain the room. This was a big beautiful suite with 2 bathroooms. Yes, there was a his and hers...awesome. Then there was the shower (which had poor water pressure) but felt like a spa...very relaxing. The king size bed was great and there was a big beautiful balcony overlooking the courtyard that gave you a view of the gorgeous landscaping. Breakfast at he hotel was the best meal of the day. There were so many options but you must try the local dish on the menu called Mangu. Another item of note is that the breads they serve at breakfast are awesome with the French press they serve you when you order coffee. So now, the best part of the trip was the hotel property. After a magical walk over the stepping stones path through the pools, you will find the beach. The hotel property has chairs with umbrellas and chairs without for the sun get your towels at the beach and within a few hours you will get the idea of how to relax. The sound of the water on this side of the island is calming...oh yeah, and if you get thirsty, there is a beach bar and will not have many needs while melting away the stress and worries of life...smell the ocean and get sand in between your toes...slow down, have a dark rum and cigar and watch your life perspective change on this beach... We will likely could you not!

We had a short three night stay at the Sublime during time spent in the Samana area. It was a delightful stay with only a few negatives. The Staff: Outstanding staff. Reception, restaurant, beach and housekeeping were outstanding. Kind, knowledgeable and friendly! The Room: Gorgeous! Clean! Loved the architecture and design of the Sublime. We stayed in a two bedroom suite. One room with a king, the other with two queens. Kitchen with essentials and good size living area. Balcony with jacuzzi (didn't use). Nightly turn-down service and drawing of shades. Large, fabulous bathrooms. Fantastic shower! The negative: hot water was rare. First day/night was fine. After that, was hit or miss. Took a cool shower or two which was fine after time spent at the beach. Did not address it with the hotel but am sure they would have taken care of it. The Grounds: Wow, just wow. The pictures on the website don't do it justice, and the pictures are great! The Beach: Lovely with comfortable cushioned chairs and loungers. Plenty of towels and friendly waitstaff! Places for shade and sun. Nice walking beach and day 2 actually found sea shells! The negative: The Viva Wyndham is on one side of the property (closest to the bar). Throughout the day they play loud music with a heavy base. Takes away from the relaxed ambience of Sublime! Move further from the bar/restaurant for more peace and quiet. The Spa: My, oh my. A beautiful oasis amongst the beautiful property. We had a one hour massage. Fantastic!! Relaxed in a comfy chair afterwards with a large coconut water. Meaning, in the coconut. Fabulous! Would most likely return just to hang out at the spa and treat myself every day. :-) The Food: This is the biggest negative. I hate to say it, but it was inconsistent. Had the quinoa breakfast bowl each day. First day amazing, second day was a different flavor but okay, third day bland and boring. Same went for the Caesar salad at lunch, inconsistent. Some meals better than others, but for the money, should be top notch, consistent and full of flavor . . . Meals should be memorable. IF I were to return I would get some grocery's and prepare a few meals myself. But honestly, this was the biggest reason I probably would not return. :-( The Location: Sublime is in a remote area. They offer a shuttle twice a day to the community of Las Terrenas. Shops and restaurants. We spend an enjoyable afternoon there. We did not have much time to explore so cannot give a complete review. It was a little over 2 hour drive to Santa Domingo airport. Overall the Sublime Samana is sublime. Would I return? Not sure . . .

I New the place and come back. The rooms and houses are very clean and the service is good. If you want to rest and stay quiet this is the place. But if you want to have more fun you have to go with a big group or go to the downtown since there was no entertainment night for kids or adults.
