Like Fado music and the beloved dish, bacalao, the Bairro Alto Hotel captures the savory, complex character of Portugal, beginning with its setting on Luis de Camoes, Lisbon's main square. Combining refined contemporary furnishings and the classic architectural elements of a beautifully restored building, celebrated designer Grace Leo-Andrieu has crafted a true urban oasis. You will be enchanted at every turn, whether admiring the traditional azulejo tile work, gazing over the Tagus River or dining in the stylish Flores restaurant.A dynamic history makes Lisbon a playground for lovers of culture. Get your bearings at Jeronimos Monastery, where views gaze over the tiled rooftops of the city's many rolling hills. Wandering the cobblestone streets of the Alfama district yields encounters with colorful markets and lively taverns, while day tripping to nearby Sintra introduces you to one of the country's most picturesque towns. Make sure to stop for a signature lunch of salt cod and vinho verde in the main square.

Set in a noisy square, this boutique hotel in a refurbished building has its charms including 2 small rooftop areas, however it is not worthy of a 5 Stars. (Leading Hotels and CNT, both of which gave it top ratings years back, should consider visiting/reevaluating.) We had two rooms, one was sold as a more spacious corner room, both were miniscule. In the larger corner room, there was not more than an arms distance between the edge of the bed and the tiny bathroom whose wood door was so badly warped, it would not close. The rooms keys didn't work well, we had laughs with other equally frustrated guests that we needed engineering degrees to stay in this hotel. Between the faulty door locks and the light switches inside the room with similar mechanical flaws, it was something of a comedy in the micro-halls of the hotel, which feels more like an old home, as we struggled together to try to open them. Many of the staff members (seemingly interns/students) were very kind, but lacked experience and could not answer basic questions about the city, hotel menus, we received an apology note in our room one evening that was addressed to another guest, etc. Others were downright rude and not accommodating. (Mr Texiera at the front desk especially.) The hotel's restaurant menus code its vegan/vegetarian dishes, which is critical in a City with a meat and shellfish-based cuisine, however in some cases incorrectly. Thankfully a well informed waiter was able to advise. There are so many wonderful places to stay in Lisbon, if you are looking for either luxury or value, the Barrio Alto has neither.

Great hotel centrally located in Biarro Alto, Lisbon. Room was great. We had the Classic Treo which was spacious for a couple. Our room happened to be overlooking a small side street so it was very quiet. Though I don’t know for sure, I would guess the rooms overlooking the plaza and Main Street might be a bit louder. We ate our breakfasts (all included in room price) at the Bahr, which is their onsite restaurant. We also wanted a casual dinner after a long day and had a bottle of wine and great food in the Lookout Terrace bar. Awesome view and vibe. My only suggestion is that they be a bit more consistent in the timing of room cleaning and turn down service. This was sort of all over the place during our4 nights. Once we mentioned something to the front desk, problem solved. Very attentive staff and great property. Would return!!!

The hotel is amazing and I love the way they are developing a high tech energy efficient hotel whilst maintaining the historic and classic exterior. The staff are all helpful and very kind. The food is absolutely amazing - despite some mobility issues they were really helpful - I fully intend to go back.

We have stayed in many hotels around the world and this hotel is at the top of our list. From the checkin where they offer you a lovely cherry wine to the stunning view, good size room, comfortable bed and outstanding breakfast with an open kitchen, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay! The location is also amazing. If you are considering, consider no more - it is phenomenal!
