The Capital Hotel in Little Rock, Arkansas

With palatial accommodations steeped in Southern tradition, the Capital Hotel has earned its renown as "the front porch of Little Rock." Its grand opening in 1870 was indeed grand, with the first electric light fixture installed in a hotel in the South and an elevator massive enough to carry a horse. Since then, this Arkansas institution, a Preferred Boutique property, part of the Preferred Hotel Group, has served as both a welcome respite with luxurious rooms and delectable cuisine and a doorway to the illustrious historic monuments and dynamic contemporary culture of the region for business and leisure travelers alike. Ninety-four lavish rooms, including 15 semi-suites and four suites, envelope guests with designer linens, free Wi-Fi and, from most windows, expansive views of downtown Little Rock. Dine on-site in the elegant Ashley's restaurant or socialize with the city's movers and shakers at the Capital Bar and Grill. Both feature Chef Lee Richardson's "New Americana Cuisine," menus handcrafted from local and seasonal ingredients with cutting-edge techniques.

Just steps from key business venues, including the Statehouse Convention Center, and vital local landmarks, such as the Clinton Library, the Arkansas Arts Center and the Historic Arkansas Museum, The Capital is a hub for visitors seeking the ultimate Little Rock experience. Posh boutiques and eclectic eateries can be found just outside the door, and River Market, the city's vibrant entertainment destination, is a pleasant walk down Markham Street. Visit the Downtown Fitness Center right across the street from The Capital for a rejuvenating workout—admission is complimentary to hotel patrons. Active guests will also find plenty of adventure in the outdoors, from golf and tennis to hiking, fishing, hunting and kayaking - the concierge at The Capital will be happy to arrange half- to full-day excursions. Whether business or pleasure brings you to the city, the "Grand Dame" of downtown Little Rock is a "capital" headquarters for your stay.

My children, staggeringly talented individuals with cosmic IQ's, are very rude about my globetrotting antics. Were I to count the number of nights I have spent in hotels the world over it would run, quite easily, into four figures, perhaps five but they refuse to countenance the idea that I may have some notion of what constitutes a good hotel. Many of the hotels in which I have stayed have been in the wallet-melting price bracket, some less so. Some are known the world over, others less so. I would venture that The Capital Hotel, Little Rock, Arkansas is not known the world over. Nor is it in the wallet-melting category, for it's skill lies in the heart-melting. The cardiac arresting quality of service......I have seldom met nicer people. Bright, Billy, Paul......have all passed charm school examinations with an A grade and it is their aura that infects every pore of this hotel. The rooms have genuine charm, all 1950's fixtures and fittings and are in size comparable with a small European kingdom. They are also comfortable, the beds large, the pillows fluffy. If the more sterile of the hotel brands wish to know how to run a hotel, they could start by spending a few days in Little Rock. The Manager, natch, is English, Brighton's finest and should, were there any justice, be in the New Years Honours List. My stetson is doffed in his direction and that of the appropriately named Capital.

Stayed one night and was a little bit disappointed: After having read all of those great comments on TripAdvisor my expectations were very high - maybe too high. Unfortunately, I also had slightly different experience than the other customers - the room on the top floor was pretty noisy (I guess that there is some central air condition or similar facilities on the roof) and not really furnished in a perfect way. WiFi was slow and the gym was in another building next door. Nice experience but not more than average rating - maybe next time, I will have the same great experience than 90+% of the other customers ...

A letter from the Capital Hotel begins with a Mark Twain quote, "...All saints can do miracles, but few of them can keep hotel".... Well, I have enjoyed many hotels over the years, but none have quite matched the small miracles created by each associate at Little Rock's Capital Hotel during this stay. A hotel consierge (Lindsay) greeted us OUTSIDE before we even entered the hotel. She took us to our room (Queen deluxe) and privately checked us in. In case you're wondering, we are not high rollers. This is what they do. I will never remember every detail or every way that an associate made me feel special; and frankly, I wouldn't want to spoil the small surprises in store for potential guest who is made to feel as so much MORE than one of the family. I can only encourage you to stay and experience for yourself. If you enjoy French cuisine like I do, you will enjoy food and beverages at One Eleven on the hotel premises that promise the same elegant twist.

We hosted a meeting of about 75 people at the Capital Hotel and were there for almost a week. Throughout, the quality of the service and support for our meeting was exemplary. Our attendees loved the space and told us on the evaluations that they valued the opportunity to be there. We would definitely use them again and highly recommend them to others. Their staff were helpful in helping us plan and throughout the meeting. The location is perfect and the space is among the best we have ever used - and we host training throughout the country. Many of our guests plan to return and bring their families. You won't regret staying here - for any purpose.
