Dukes Hotel in London, England

Tucked into a tiny alleyway off St. James' Place, Dukes Hotel is quintessential Britain – it dates from 1908, but the interior is modern and the atmosphere is convivial. Impressive oil paintings and dark antique furniture preside alongside brightly upholstered settees, and beds are renowned for being incredibly comfortable. You’ll want to down one of the martinis at Dukes Bar, said to be the inspiration behind James Bond's request for "shaken, not stirred."

Ask the doorman to direct you to the secret entrance of Green Park. Wander amid magical greenery and unpack a picnic basket of quiche and summery greens. Return for Gin and Tonic Afternoon Tea in the parlour, an affair that deliciously fuses two British traditions. Top off the evening meal with a Cuban cigar and glass of cognac in the secluded garden lounge.

My husband booked two nights for my 70th birthday and it was truly fabulous. Friendly staff excellent breakfasts and cocktails! Rooms of a really high standard. What a find in the Capital. We are hoping to go back again.

I am very lucky to travel as part of my job and know very well what I need when working and on my own. When travelling as a couple it is important to make those small but detailed adjustments in expectation so that the stay is your partner's delight. We found that the Dukes Hotel was the very best at understanding this and so as a consequence is my wife's favorite hotel. The level of service from beginning to the end of our stay was exemplary without being over done and obsequious. We stayed on a package and the breakfast was fabulous. Next time we would choose a room with a larger bed.

Dukes is slightly off of the main street in a small mews which adds to its sense of privacy and exclusivity. The service is in typical British fashion, courteous and gracious. The rooms are small but cozy and very well appointed. The intimate bar is warm and welcoming. There is a small but well appointed fitness center and the restaurant, GBR is quite good.

My niece and I went to the Dukes Hotel yesterday for her birthday for afternoon tea. We were running late from the 02 so I phoned the hotel to explain that we would be late. When we arrived at the hotel we had a very "frosty" reception from one of the receptionist (foreign accent) however the other receptionist very kindly showed us to the restaurant. From there we received the best every attention I have ever had in London by a very lovely Italian lady who couldn't do enough for us. We had a fantastic afternoon tea. Also when I originally booked the afternoon tea I then had to change it due to illness and again a lovely man called Artur was so helpful in changing the date for me. Overall we had a fantastic experience apart from "Miss Frosty" at the main reception who needs to go to a charm school.

What a pleasure to stay at this beautiful, calm, clean hotel. The staff were lovely people who seemed to genuinely care about looking after us rather than just processing us competently as customers. We had a super meal at GBR and the cocktails definitely lived up to all expectations. Location was great, (we could walk to the theatre)- looking forwards to staying again.
