Dukes Hotel in London, England

Tucked into a tiny alleyway off St. James' Place, Dukes Hotel is quintessential Britain – it dates from 1908, but the interior is modern and the atmosphere is convivial. Impressive oil paintings and dark antique furniture preside alongside brightly upholstered settees, and beds are renowned for being incredibly comfortable. You’ll want to down one of the martinis at Dukes Bar, said to be the inspiration behind James Bond's request for "shaken, not stirred."

Ask the doorman to direct you to the secret entrance of Green Park. Wander amid magical greenery and unpack a picnic basket of quiche and summery greens. Return for Gin and Tonic Afternoon Tea in the parlour, an affair that deliciously fuses two British traditions. Top off the evening meal with a Cuban cigar and glass of cognac in the secluded garden lounge.

I have stayed at this hotel several times with my family, the last time before my most recent trip was in 2012. Dukes was our go-to hotel spot in London, the location is great and we had found the hotel and rooms charming, the staff friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, my most recent stay with my mother was extremely disappointing. The night we arrived we were given the tiniest rooms wedged in the back of the hotel. We asked them to make a room change – which they did – and we were told that our luggage would be moved to our new rooms by the time we returned to the hotel later that evening, and they had not been moved. While the new rooms were larger, they were extremely cold and my "queen" sized bed was actually two twin mattresses pushed together, leaving a very uncomfortable gap in the middle. I called the concierge several times to ask for assistance, once before my trip for help with restaurant reservations, and a couple of times while in London to inquire about tickets to the theater. The concierge never called back with any information or help when I had been promised that they were looking into tickets for us. I do not think it's the guest's job to keep hounding the concierge to help them during their stay. Furthermore, we had asked for a copy of the NYTimes delivered to our door every morning, and after two nights of our stay, they stopped delivering the newspaper. I also found the internet connection to be very poor, it had a very slow and weak connection and my computer and could barely get my phone to connect, which is very important to me when traveling internationally. I am very disappointed that we have to find a new place to stay in London as we had really enjoyed Dukes in the past. We learned that the manager who had presided over the hotel in years prior left to open a new Dukes hotel in Dubai, so that might explain the shift in quality. It's a shame!

After visiting Buckingham Palace we went to Dukes for afternoon tea. A torrential downpour left us arriving drenched at the hotel, so it was lovely to sit and relax and enjoy our champagne afternoon tea. Very friendly polite staff and a very pleasant way to round off a lovely day in London

I stayed here recently and the location is absolutely fantastic. The hotel itself has that lovely traditional British feel, yet is fully up to date with modern hotel facilities. We did have a problem with the room booking, but it was sorted out in minutes. Mistakes happen, but it how they are dealt with is what matters, so 10/10 for the hotel here. If you are looking for an excellent hotel in a perfect location, the Dukes is right up there.

Impeccable service - professional, knowledgeable, courteous and above all friendly. A cosy, classy bar. And above all the definitive dry martini. Simple, but as good as it gets, delivered with a nice bit of theatre. Yes, they're ÂŁ19, but there's a good reason why they only serve a maximum of two per person. Should be on everyone's bucket list.

Hotel has been recently renovated, with the latest amenities yet keeping its old world feel. Highly trained staff, redecorated bistro, and a wonderful bar where people congregate after hours. Location AAA.
