Dukes Hotel in London, England

Tucked into a tiny alleyway off St. James' Place, Dukes Hotel is quintessential Britain – it dates from 1908, but the interior is modern and the atmosphere is convivial. Impressive oil paintings and dark antique furniture preside alongside brightly upholstered settees, and beds are renowned for being incredibly comfortable. You’ll want to down one of the martinis at Dukes Bar, said to be the inspiration behind James Bond's request for "shaken, not stirred."

Ask the doorman to direct you to the secret entrance of Green Park. Wander amid magical greenery and unpack a picnic basket of quiche and summery greens. Return for Gin and Tonic Afternoon Tea in the parlour, an affair that deliciously fuses two British traditions. Top off the evening meal with a Cuban cigar and glass of cognac in the secluded garden lounge.

Dukes hotel was nothing short of awesome. From the check in process to the absolutely perfect martinis to the fact that every single person greeted us with a smile and a hello. One of the best things was that in our room the hotel gave us a cell phone based "Handy" unit that we could use for the google maps as we walked around London as well as make calls in the U.K and international at no charge. This saved us a SIM card cost and came in super handy. An example of how attentIve they were was when my wife had a hair dryer stop working and after she called down to the desk they were knocking on our door with a new one in 3-4 minutes. If you are looking for super clean rooms, a hotel with history and exceptional service and in a great location then Dukes is it.

We stayed in room 318 - set up as two single beds. Great light, plenty of space for storing things. Typical room for London - comfortable but not one to sit in for a period of time. Staff, service - everything was just perfect. The Drawing Room is a great place to sit and catch your breathe. Location is fantastic. The a/c is a little loud but worked wonderfully.

Lovey hotel, helpful staff and very well situated, near to shops and the Underground. It was within walking distance to Green Park as well as the guided coach tours of the city of London. Breakfast was not included in my package, but theit menu had a great selection to choose from.

Sadly, it doesn't matter how wonderful a room is, or how professional and charming the staff are, if you don't get a good night's sleep... We were disappointed to find our room overlooking the light well at the back of the hotel, but thought it would at least have the advantage of quietness. How wrong we were. There is obviously some plant or equipment on 24/7. We'd noticed a constant drone earlier in the day, but assumed it was something that would be switched off at night. When your head hits the pillow, you realise that assumption is wrong. But at midnight, you're not exactly going to ask to switch rooms. That restless night was made worse when the noisy air-con came on at 6am. We couldn't find the controls so rang reception. But even then we couldn't seem to just turn it off completely. So unfortunate that our stay for a special birthday treat was blighted in this way. Profuse apologies can't bring back the night. We were in Room 201.

The bar's the thing. We've been going for the Martinis for years; best in town. Finally spent the night. Ordinary double room. Fine. Nothing more. Beautiful hotel. Well-placed for mooching: Green Park, Shepherds Market.
