Dukes Hotel in London, England

Tucked into a tiny alleyway off St. James' Place, Dukes Hotel is quintessential Britain – it dates from 1908, but the interior is modern and the atmosphere is convivial. Impressive oil paintings and dark antique furniture preside alongside brightly upholstered settees, and beds are renowned for being incredibly comfortable. You’ll want to down one of the martinis at Dukes Bar, said to be the inspiration behind James Bond's request for "shaken, not stirred."

Ask the doorman to direct you to the secret entrance of Green Park. Wander amid magical greenery and unpack a picnic basket of quiche and summery greens. Return for Gin and Tonic Afternoon Tea in the parlour, an affair that deliciously fuses two British traditions. Top off the evening meal with a Cuban cigar and glass of cognac in the secluded garden lounge.

This was my second stay at Dukes and it was lovely! The location is great and it really feels like classic London. It has so much more charm than other chain hotels. The bar is fantastic and only hotel guests can reserve tables!

I've been to London several times and stayed at a lot of different properties. The fact that Dukes is in a mews in Mayfair is just lovely. We entered the property as people were having tea outside and went up to our room. The hotel has history, but is beautifully maintained. The fixtures are still new. It was my birthday and my significant other had called and had arranged for flowers and chocolates to be waiting upon check in; however, the hotel took it upon themselves to send up cake and champagne. Unfortunately they never told us that we had breakfast included, so we only had breakfast our last day (when we had decided we would pay for it), but it was to our disappointment that we could have indulged in poached eggs, toast, wonderful English back bacon and a cuppa tea daily. Ooops! They'll tell you that the bar is where Ian Fleming coined 'shaken not stirred' from James Bond--- I've had several martinis, not sure if that's the best I've ever had, but certainly the strongest. It was almost pure vodka! I also went to the spa at the hotel, which was great, because I was able to have a massage that immediately cured me of all jetlag. The only thing the hotel could improve upon is the service staff at the front desk were inconsistent.

Had to rate the food at the GBR with only 3 points as the next step up was 4 which was very good. Everything about our visit was good, from reception to drinks and food. In fact the Service probably out-shone the food on this occasion, however was still satisfied and enjoyed the whole experience . Well done to the team Thanks

We already had an excellent stay at Dukes hotel in the past, that's why we came back. This hotel has all the charm you can look for and is located perfectly. This time however, 2 big letdowns ... First: the room didn't seem properly cleaned. Also we left an empty plastic (cotton swab) clearly visible, but it wasn't replaced. Second: we booked our superior room at £ 223,00 per night (which in fact is a very reasonable price). However, we had the opportunity to stay an extra night. The best price they could give us (when we arrived at the hotel) for this extra night was £ 348,50 per night. What gives ? We learned during our stay that the room wasn't even booked ? Customer service wise for us a very big no no ... Pity

Visited Dukes with my business manager from New York, what a lovely place, not so easy to find it has its own little cul de sac, its very very welcoming, we had a few meetings, could not have had more helpfull staff. We had drinks in the bar area, you may have to reserve it get's very busy. We had dinner in a charming dining room a very nice space, comfy seating not to close, with lots of antique mirrored panels. We had, a lovely bottle of Pinot Noir, I had lamb cutlets, Michelle had cod with a shellfish stew, my lamb came with curly kale, hot pot style mash. We both had a very nice green salad, with tasty dressing, desserts well Victoria poached plums, I had Apple crumble with proper granny smith cooking apples. Our actual room was a little small, well appointed and a huge bathroom, it needed the one thing many hotels lack, a lighted magnifying mirror for ladies and gentlemen, they are a great asset. The only other comment and it happens in many fine hotels, they use the duvet only system, it was so snuggly, with lovely pillows, but I get hot during the night, (its my medication) at home I move my duvet off, just keep the blanket, now in many great hotels you end up with your foot out of the covers or an arm as well, it would obviously cost more to have a sheet or blanket, its a small point, I felt it worth mentioning, it was a really great stay, the staff are excellent., the food in the dining room was so very good the service, so much better than a famous 5 star hotel, which was so bad I did not review it, Dukes Hotel is excellent, it will be my pleasure to return to my new London home.
