Dukes Hotel in London, England

Tucked into a tiny alleyway off St. James' Place, Dukes Hotel is quintessential Britain – it dates from 1908, but the interior is modern and the atmosphere is convivial. Impressive oil paintings and dark antique furniture preside alongside brightly upholstered settees, and beds are renowned for being incredibly comfortable. You’ll want to down one of the martinis at Dukes Bar, said to be the inspiration behind James Bond's request for "shaken, not stirred."

Ask the doorman to direct you to the secret entrance of Green Park. Wander amid magical greenery and unpack a picnic basket of quiche and summery greens. Return for Gin and Tonic Afternoon Tea in the parlour, an affair that deliciously fuses two British traditions. Top off the evening meal with a Cuban cigar and glass of cognac in the secluded garden lounge.

I had previously stayed at Dukes on a number of occasions in 80's and 90's but infrequently since as I have little need to stay in London. However, it remains excellent and is certainly my favourite hotel in London. The location in St James is wonderful, minutes walk away from Mayfair, Theatre land, Piccadilly and The Mall. It is also extremely quiet, tucked away in a secluded corner of St James. Service is discreet but impeccable and the rooms are very comfortable. The cocktail bar is a great place to meet and entertain and the restaurant and food are first class.

We have made this hotel our London base both for business and for pleasure. The staff is well-trained and friendly, the food is very good and so are the rooms. The hotel looks and feels like a quiet wealthy home away from home and yet it is splendidly located.

lovely quiet hotel in great location, friendly staff, nice room, great shower and good facilities, the complimentary phone/pda is a great idea and came in very handy for maps etc. There is easy access at the end of St James Place direct into Green Park which was very useful.

We didn't actually stay at the hotel - I had the pleasure of organising my friends hen do and we came across Dukes Hotel picnics which included a picnic being delivered, set up for you in Green park with all crockery included! They even came and cleared it away! We had such a good day and Dukes Hotel were very accomodating right from the start. When we arrived at the park, the butlers were already there with ice boxes, blankets and the food ready to set up. The food was perfect, exactly what I imagined from a 5 star hotel. They even had a back up plan for us if the weather was not good! Overall I would recommend this service! Thanks for a great day!

I had been to Dukes before for afternoon tea and always wanted to return and stay. I was not disappointed- right from the very start the doorman and reception staff were charming and the lobby and stairwell smelled delicious- the scent from huge arrangements of summer flowers. Our room (118) was a good size for London with an extremely comfortable bed and scrupulously clean. The breakfast was generous and well cooked. The Hotel is in a wonderful location - very quiet but close to Green Park, Buckingham Palace and Piccadilly for the Royal Academy and Fortnums. I have now been spoiled for any other Hotel in London - I wouldn't want to stay anywhere else.
